Opis:
The role of textural information can be essential when analyzing remote images of forest ecosystems. Geostatistically based methods that use textural information are widely used in image processing. The role of geostatistical methods in analyzing remote sensing images of forest areas increased rapidly during the last several years following advancements in high−resolution remote−sensor technology. The results of numerous applications of geostatistical methods for processing remotely sensed forest images are very encouraging. This paper summarizes the geostatistical methods for remote sensing classification of forest ecosystems.

Opis:
Training dataset for modelling of forest cover was created after classification of multispectral satel− lite imagery IKONOS−2 with spatial resolution 3.2 m (acquisition date – 12.08.2011). As a result, we created binary forest cover map with 2 categories: ‘forest’ and ‘not−forest’. That allowed us to compute the tree canopy cover for each pixel of Landsat 8 OLI, using vector grid with cell size of 30×30 m. Classification model was developed using training dataset that included 17,000 observations, 10,000 of them represented results of IKONOS−2 classification. Aiming to avoid errors of agricultural lands inclusion into forest mask because of lack of data, additionally we collected about 7000 random observations with canopy cover 0% that had been evenly distributed within unforested area. Random Forest (RF) model we developed allowed us to create continuous map of forests within study area that represents in each pixel value of tree canopy closeness (0−100%). To convert it into a discrete map, we recoded all values less than 30% as ‘no data’ and values from 30 to 100% as 1. Forest mask for two selected administrative districts of Chernihiv region (NE Ukraine) was created after screening map from small pixel groups that covered area less than 0.5 ha. Obtained results were compared with Global Forest Change (GFC) map and proved that GFC data can be used for forest mapping with tree canopy closeness threshold 40%. On considerable areas of abandoned agricultural lands in the analysed regions of Ukraine, forest stands are formed by Scots pine, silver birch, black alder and aspen. Existence of such forests substantially increases (on 6−8%) the forested area of Gorodnya and Snovsk districts of Chernihiv region – comparing to official forest inventory data. However, such stands are not protected and have high risks to be severed by wildfires, illegal cuttings with aim to renew the agricultural production, by diseases, insects and other natural disturbances.

Opis:
The paper presents selected applications of the geostatistical methods for remote sensing studies of forest ecosystems. The texture of the remote sensing images of the forests can be highly complex, but at the same time it is very useful for interpretation of these images. We explored differences on semivariances calculated from transects of the Landsat TM images associated with images of young, middle−aged, old, and natural versus planted stands, as well as compared semivariances for loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) and longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) in Georgia, USA. We analyzed the imagery data in conjunction with ground measurements. The results showed that in spite of the relatively low Landsat TM resolution (30m), the semivariances might give useful additional information about the above−mentioned classes. The semivariances for loblolly pine depend on the age as well as on the origin of the forest stand (natural vs. planted). On the other hand, because of the low−resolution, the classical parameters of a range of semi−variances are rather difficult for classification. However, we found important differences for sill values as well as for semivariance values for the distances of a few lags. These parameters seem to be useful for forest stand discrimination. Significant differences were also found between semivariances calculated from loblolly pine and longleaf pine stands.

Opis:
BlackBridge imagery is one of the new means of information used in forest condition analysis. Rapid Eye satellite data with a 5 m spatial resolution register spectral information from 440 to 850 nm through 5 spectral bands. This range of electromagnetic spectrum provides information on plant chlorophyll content as well as cell structure. Such data allows to monitor vegetation condition. This paper focuses on a research conducted in the Sudety and Western Beskidy mountains (southern Poland). The aim of the research was to verify whether high resolution satellite imagery is applicable in detection of the damages caused by Ips typographus and acid rain in Norway spruce dominated stands through supervised classification. BlackBridge Rapid Eye satellite images from 2012 and 2013 were analysed. Various modifications of classification methods were tested, including change in combination of spectral bands. Each method resulted in different classification accuracy. Best results were observed in case of the Maximum Likelihood classification method applied on all spectral bands. The analysis showed that the time of the image registration has a significant impact on classification results. The average classification accuracy for 2012 images was 0.53, whereas for 2013 – 0.69. Moreover, information gathered from 5 m pixels is too general to classify individual dead trees in a precise manner. Tested methods are applicable only in detection of clusters of dead trees.

Opis:
The mainstream of remotely sensed methodology for identifying the tree stand condition is based on spectral responses registered by a multispectral sensor as a digital image. The changes in spectral properties are caused by dying leaves, needles or whole trees. In further steps, the relationship between the spectral values (radiometry) registered in a multispectral satellite image and the health condition of trees should be determined. The most frequent situation includes the one whem dying stand (sensu single tree) occupies the area of <5 m². Therefore the remotely sensed data for determining sanitary conditions of trees must be of a very high spatial resolution (e.g. WorldView2 or 3, GeoEye−1, Pleiades) on one hand and at the same time favourable for the vegetation studies, i.e. utilizing suitable spectral bands and be of low acquisition cost (e.g. RapidEye, LANDSAT−7, ETM +, LANDSAT−8 OLI). Thus a compromise between spatial and spectral resolution should be found to answer the question at what resolution it is possible to clearly separate the damaged tree. The scope of the research included testing of selected methods of satellite image processing and analysis in terms of defining the optimal spatial resolution, which was performed on simulated images obtained for the area of the Beskidy Mountains (S Poland). Pixel size on simulated images was downgraded to the size corresponding to the currently functioning satellite systems. Consequently the obtained material for comparison was free from influence of external factors such as the differences in: time and weather conditions, the geometry of satellite image acquisition, light at the surface of the treetops and phenological vegetation. For each image we used vegetation indices (NDVI and GDVI) and supervised classification. These tests and the obtained results allowed to draw conclusions about the optimal satellite image resolution that can be used to detect damaged or dead stands.

Despite constant advances in geostatistics and its many succesful applications in remote sensing and forestry, it remains a relatively unknown field in Poland. The main aim of this paper is to show applicability of various geostatistical techniques in estimation of inventory measures and biophysical parameters of forests. We show examples of practical applications without going into the complex theoretical bases of the described methods. We also present a wide selection of the most important papers in the subject.

Opis:
The paper aimed at comparison of remotely sensed data for forest areas in Poland. The main objective was to study how time−series of satellite data derived from NOAA AVHRR and SPOT VEGETATION (SPOT VGT) are compatible and can be useful for forest cover monitoring. NOAA AVHRR fifteen−year observations collected by the receiving station mounted at the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography were processed with radiometric, geometric and atmospheric corrections to obtain Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) images. Next, daily NDVI images were clustered into ten−day composites and smoothed with Savitzky−Golay filter. The long−term NDVI data derived from SPOT VGT were post−processed in order to prepare reference set to cross−comparison analysis. The study area encompasses forest complexes representative for various climatic conditions: Borecka, Augustów, Knyszyn and Białowieża Forests as well as forests of the Karkonosze and Beskid Żywiecki mountains. The satellite data were analyzed within vegetation period (April−September). The comparison of frequency of cloud−free observations and mean NDVI values over study sites was performed to follow the deviations in two datasets. The Wilcoxon signed−rank test proved that there are statistically significant NDVI differences between NOAA and SPOT data for Augustów, Knyszyn, Białowieża and Karkonosze Forests. On the other hand, NDVI observations for Borecka Forest and Beskid Żywiecki Mts. revealed quite high compatibility. The Spearman rank correlation results proved that NDVI time−series derived from NOAA AVHRR and SPOT VGT are incoherent and depended on test site or year of the observation. The cross−comparison analysis revealed that there is a need for additional investigation into achieving full compatibility of satellite datasets for successful forest cover monitoring.
