The aim of the study was estimation of reaction on the temperature and hudmitity stress factors of seeds thirty progenies of Ramucka provenance Scots Pine plus trees. The seeds of Scots Pine were treated in acceleration ageing test according to Machanićek method and germination test was performed for investigated seeds. Opis:
The effect of the snow cover on the survival of beech seeds from the time seeds fell onto the ground until the appearance of seedlings was investigated during two seasons at the study sites in the Babiogórski National Park and in the Ojcowski National Park. The obtained results show that snow cover has influence on the shaping of a spatial pattern of seed survival, and on the appearance of germinated seedlings. However, no decisive influence of snow cover was shown on the appearance of seedlings. The drying of the germinated seeds is the main cause of their mortality.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to determine the influence of the age of parent tree stand on selected physical properties of Norway spruce seeds to improve the efficiency of seed separation processes. Seeds were harvested in a forest complex located in the seed zone No. 202, in the municipality of Kruklanki in the Borki Forest District (N Poland) during mast years (1999, 2004, 2007 and 2012). The experimental material comprised of Norway spruce seeds from three differently aged tree stands (86, 119 and 129 years old in the first harvest year). The following measurements were performed for each seed: terminal velocity – with a pneumatic classifier; length and width – with a laboratory microscope; thickness – with a thickness gauge; angle of external friction – on an inclined plane, in two positions on a steel friction plate, and mass – with a laboratory scale. The results were used to calculate the arithmetic and geometric mean diameters, aspect ratio, sphericity index and density of seeds. The values of the analyzed properties were compared with ANOVA for factorial designs and linear correlation analysis. The results of the study indicate that Norway spruce seeds obtained from cones harvested in 2012 are characterized by the highest thickness and, consequently, by the highest values of the aspect ratio and sphericity index. The age of parent trees significantly influences the majority of physical properties of seeds. However, the patterns of observed changes are difficult to interpret due to the impact of weather conditions and the genetic potential of parent trees, which perform differently in response to changing climate and geomorphological conditions. Over the analyzed 13−year period a gradual increase was noted in the width, geometric mean diameter, aspect ratio and sphericity index of seeds, whereas the length and density of seeds decreased. Therefore, Norway spruce seeds should be separated mostly with the use of mesh screens with longitudinal openings, pneumatic separators and graders. The use of those devices, separately or in combination, for sorting Norway spruce seeds into mass fractions could contribute to more uniform seedling emergence when every seed fraction is sown separately.

Opis:
The research was conducted in beech−fir and beech stands in the territory of the Babiogórski and Ojcowski national parks. The obtained results showed that the density of seedlings after the autumn seed fall was small. The seed fraction from which seedlings emerged did not exceed 8%. In the Babiogórski National Park, no spatial relationship was found between seed and seedling abundance. However, such relationship was found in beech and sycamore in the Ojcowski National Park during one season. This was associated with a lower density of seed predating rodents in the forests around Ojców than on the Babia Góra and the specificity of the environmental providing a wide variety of living conditions for small mammals.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to determine whether differences exist between the selected characteristics of Norway spruce cones and seeds depending on their location in the crown. The study was performed in two spruce tree stands growing under mountainous conditions (the Beskidy Mountains, southern Poland). In winter 2015, the cones were collected from 60 standing trees located in the two selected seed stands – Ujsoły and Rycerka. From each tree, the cones were collected from three crown zones: top, central and bottom differing in terms of light conditions. Two characteristics of the cones and six characteristics of the seeds were analysed. To determine quantitative and qualitative traits of seeds standard methods for seed testing were applied. Significant differences between the populations were determined for cone weight and fraction of full seeds, weight of 1000 seeds and germination capacity. The crown zones differed significantly in terms of fraction of cones in the parts of the crown and mass of one cone as well as weight of 1000 seeds, germination energy and germination capacity. Moreover, a significant intra−population variation was observed for a majority of the analysed characteristics (fraction of full seeds, weight of one cone, weight of 1000 seeds, germination energy, and germination capacity). However, no statistically significant interaction between population and crown zone was observed. A significantly lower contribution of cones in the bottom zone of the crown may affect the economic viability of the commercial harvest. On the other hand some of the important seeds traits (e.g. weight of 1000 seeds, germination energy and germination capacity) were significantly better in the bottom and central part of the crown than in the top zone. There are no justified circumstances (both qualitative and quantitative) to perform the cone harvest only from the top zone of the crown.

Opis:
Critical transport velocity, thickness, width, length, angle of sliding friction and weight of small−leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.) seeds from five batches, harvested in four neighboring seed regions in Poland, were determined. The values of shape factor, cross−sectional area, volume and density were calculated for each seed. The results were compared using standard statistical methods (simple ANOVA, correlation, single−variable and multivariate regression analysis). The highest correlation was observed between weight of seeds and their thickness and width. Majority of regression equations developed in the study was characterized by a relatively high percentage of explained variation, taking into account the type of experimental material.

Opis:
Dormancy of black locust seed is exogenous imposed by hard seed coat a physical barrier to water enters to embryo. Seeds need scarification of seed coat before sowing. In practice, this can be done in different (thermal, mechanical, chemical and natural) methods. Effects of the previous two of them were compared on laboratory germination capacity and seedling emergence in the forest nursery. Statistically higher germinability and seedling emergence were obtained after mechanical scarification of seeds. After inconsiderable modification, the device for mechanical seed extraction from larch cones can be used as mechanical scarifier of black locust seeds.
