Opis:
The correct assessment of the site conditions is the basis of the good management of forest areas. The aim of this study was to find a set of soil properties, which allow separating the diverse sites in terms of the soil productivity. We used 180 locations in the Carpathians and the Sudety Mountains for testing. The study plots were located in transects from the foothills to the top along the slopes, taking into account the variability of site conditions, geological substrate and exposition. The index was calculated on the basis of the content of <0.02 mm particles, the sum of exchangeable base cations, soil acidity and the ratio between total N content and organic C in the humus−mineral horizon. The soil trophic index for mountain areas (SIGg) that include the climatic factor was introduced. The factor is defined as the 650/altitude ratio for a given point above sea level. In the mountains, the content of <0.02 mm fraction, the sum of exchangeable base cations and soil acidity were determined in the column of 1 m² of the soil cross section and depth of 1 m (1 m³ of volume) due to the lower depth of the soil profile. The SIGg correctly separates soil of different productivity as the properties closely associated with the stable elements of the soil, expressing its production and properties, which reflect the current state of the soil environment, were used in the construction SIGg.

The impact of narrow (up to 2 m), medium (up to 3.5 m) and wide (>3.5 m) tourist trails on the surrounding environment was investigated. On wide trails, the value of soil erosion and compaction indices was found to be the highest, while the herb height index was the lowest indicating the greatest impact of wide trails on the environment. The phytosociological relevés were used to determine ecological indicator figures. Wide trails were characterized by higher thermal and continentalism indices and lower pH and trophic indices. The proportion of therophytes and geophytes was higher, while of hemicryptophytes, phanerophytes and chamaephytes on wide trails were lower than on medium and narrow trails. All the analysed indices pointed to a stronger impact of wide trails on the environment in comparison with medium and narrow trails.

Opis:
Two different communities of microorganisms were identified in soils by application of the classical method of fungi isolation (soil dilution, culturing on artificial media, morphotyping) and a molecular method (extraction of the environmental DNA, amplification with universal primers NS1 and NS2, cloning and sequencing of representative clones). No organisms were common to both communities. Apart from rare representatives of the Animalia, communities included single fungus−like Eucarya belonging to the Protista, Class Oomycota, and numerous fungi belonging to Chytridiomycota, Zygomycota, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota orders. In total, 88 species were identified in four soil samples. Fungi were mostly Ascomycota. The classical method was particularly effective in detection of fungi important for creation of phytosanitary conditions of soil, i.e. antagonists (Penicillium, Tolypocladium and Trichoderma) and potential stimulants (dark−pigmented Hormiactis candida, Humicola spp. and Phialophora spp.) of phytopathogens (including the common forest genera Armillaria and Heterobasidion). Application of the classical method allowed the detection of mycorrhizal Ascomycota from the genus Oidiodendron. Application of the molecular method allowed the detection of 13 mycorrhizal Basidiomycota. Although primers NS1 and NS2 were designed from a match with DNA of culturable organisms, they also amplified the DNA of non−culturable organisms. This emphasizes their potential usefulness in studies of the biodiversity of microorganisms in environmental samples. The shortage of reference sequences in the database discourages use of the 18S rDNA region in studies on fungal communities. The studies on the biodiversity of microorganisms need the application of a few independent methods of detection and identification.

The objectives of this work was to develop a site index models for main forest−forming tree species in Poland based on data from published yield tables. The research material include growth series of birch, European beech, common oak, red oak, European hornbeam, European ash, Norway maple, small−leaved lime, black alder, trembling aspen, locust, Douglas fir, silver fir, European larch, Scots pine, and Norway spruce. Six algebraic difference models were preliminary selected for the construction of site index model. When selecting a potential models an assumption was made, that the index system should be characterized by good fit to the empirical data, polymorphism, variable asymptotes for different sites and equality of the site index and height at a certain base age. To estimate parameters of individual models all possible combinations among height−age pairs for each tree were used. The selection of the best model was based on fit criteria describing: proportion of variance explained, error range and standard deviation of the residuals. Best fitting model was selected basing on the sum of ranks from individual criteria and for each individual tree species a separate model was selected, which fits the best growth series from the yield tables. For 16 out of 19 species, the best fit statistics were demonstrated by the model developed on the base of the function [2]. Developed models may be used both in forestry practice and forestry research in order to estimate site index for analyzed tree species.

Habitat preferences of capercaillie Tetrao urogallus in the Augustowska Forest (NE Poland) were evaluated using classification trees. Data were collected on 1033 circular sampling plots localized on leks and in their vicinity with 1 km radius. Gathered information described tree stands (site conditions, age, species composition, tree density, closure, vertical structure, lower strata coverage (saplings and shrubs) and blueberry coverage (Vaccinium myrtillus) as well signs of capercaillie presence. The analysis shows that for capercaillie of key importance are tree stands growing on fresh or wet coniferous sites, more than 100 years old, with density less than 446 trees/ha, with anthill and situated more than 150 from a road.

Opis:
The perception of forests has changed in recent years. The non−wood services of forests gain more and more importance. Society pays more attention to the protective and social aspects of forestry. Hence, there is the need for their valuation. The aim of the research was to determine the economic value of the tourist function of the ‘Nad Tanwią’ nature reserve (south−eastern Poland) using a contingent valuation method (CVM). The objective reserve is a strict reserve with an area of 41.3 hectares. In order to determine its tourist value we conducted a survey that included a group of 341 tourists resting in this area. The research was carried out from May to September 2017. The CVM method uses a questionnaire as a tool to show respondents’ Willingness−To−Pay (WTP). The research used a variant of the CVM method in the form of a Payment Card. We used classification and regression trees for the statistical analysis. The method compiled data on the amount of hypothetical contributions for reserve protection (WTP) and the amount of contributions in the case of doubling the respondents’ income (WTP2). As a result of data analysis, the WTP model was built. The respondents reported the need of 14 types of visits in terms of their duration, most often they preferred short visits of up to 3 days. The demand for recreation in the reserve was determined using the regression equation: Sd=(29.87679/N)–0.12102. Hypothetical propensity to pay contributions for the protection of the ‘Nad Tanwią’ nature reserve was confirmed by 46% of respondents, while the remaining ones were against paying fees for this purpose. The average fee for all visits was PLN 27.51. The value of non−market benefits per person was PLN 340/year, and for the group of respondents it was around PLN 116,000. The valuation of all functions of forests is important from a practical point of view, as it supports foresters in making decisions about the right direction of forest management. In addition, forest areas covered by various forms of nature conservation are an important place of recreation for tourists.

Opis:
Statistical representative method of inventory based on stratified sampling is used for elaborate forest management plans in Poland. Strata are created according to the dominant tree species and age of stands. First stratum include stands with age from 21 to 30 years and the interval in the next strata is 10 years. Sample plot size depends on stand age and varies from 0.005 to 0.05 ha. According to the allocation pattern number of samples is proportional to age and total area of stands in a stratum. Diversification of number and size of sample plots has a profound influence of inventory precision in an age classes. The aim of the study is to analyse the accuracy of the stand volume determination on the level of age−species strata. Research was conducted based on the data obtained from periodic forest inventory in seven mountainous forest subdistricts located in the Kłodzko Basin (SW Poland). Norway spruce stands with total area of 39,935.45 ha and 6102 sample plots were chosen for analysis. Sampling fraction, mean number and volume of trees on a sample plot, coefficient of volume variability and standard error of volume were calculated for each stratum in analyzed forest subdistricts. Sample plots with size of 0.005 ha established in young stands (21−30 years) are characterized by small number of trees (4.3−7.6 in average) and the highest coefficient of volume variability (93%). Additionally, because of low age of stands, the number of plots is also small (18 on average), which influences the low precision of volume inventory in this stratum. Standard error of volume was on the mean level of 23% in the youngest age stratum and decreased with age of stands to 5% in the stands of 41−71 years and below this level in the strata with the older stands. Increasing the plot size in the youngest stratum will be effective way to improve accuracy of forest inventory in the method based on stratified sampling.

Opis:
The work studied the effects of site conditions on the amount of deadwood (DW) in managed forests in south−western Poland. Measurements included standing dead trees, snags with a diameter at breast height of at least 7 cm, and lying deadwood (logs, branches, uprooted trees, etc.) with a diameter at the thicker end of at least 10 cm. The study excluded snags and deadwood pieces with a diameter of less than 7 cm as well as stumps. Site conditions are presented according to the Polish site classification system taking into account both site fertility and water abundance. With respect of the fertility gradient, sites are classified as dystrophic, oligotrophic, mesotrophic, and eutrophic. In terms of water abundance, there are two types of sites: mesic (low or very low contribution of groundwater, rainwater, and floodwater, with an approximate springtime water table depth of more than 1.8 m) and moist (moderate or considerable contribution of groundwater, rainwater, and floodwater, with an approximate springtime water table depth of 0.5−1.8 m). We analyzed data from 2522 sampling plots with area ranging from 50 to 500 m² and depending on forest stand age. The plots were established in forest stands older than 21 years old. The predominant tree species in the study area were Pinus sylvestris, Quercus robur, Quercus petraea, Betula pendula, Fagus sylvatica, Alnus glutinosa, Fraxinus excelsior and Picea abies. In a separate analysis of data from 233 sampling plots, we studied the relationship between DW volume and the site index evaluated using a five−level classification (level I denotes sites with the highest productive capacity). Forest stands aged >80 years with the dominance of Pinus sylvestris were studied. The study showed a significant influence of site conditions on the DW volume in managed forests. Forest stands exhibiting better site conditions not only provided more timber, but also contributed with a greater amount of deadwood to the ecosystem. Forest stands with a site index of I contained as much as 4.9 m³ of DW/ha, while stands with a site index of III only 2.4 m³ of DW/ha. In terms of the 8 studied site types, it was also found that the average volume of DW increased with site fertility. The lowest volume of DW occurred on very nutrient−poor and mesic sites (0.6 m³/ha). In contrast, nutrient−rich and moist sites contained 15 times as much DW (9.5 m³/ha). Of paramount importance was water abundance. The volume of DW on moist sites was on average by 2.2−4.5 m³/ha higher than on mesicsites with the same fertility.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of deforestation caused by environmental pollution on the chemical composition of stream waters draining the small catchments located in the Skrzyczne massif (Beskid Śląski, southern Poland). In the 1950−60s this area was subjected to heavy anthropogenic pressure with excessive deposition of sulfur and nitrogen compounds. It resulted in the damage to the stands and deforestation of the ridge fragments of the studied area. The study was conducted in the catchment of the Malinowski Stream and its two subcatchments: forested and deforested in 2013. Waters of the studied streams characterized by low conductivity and mineralization. In the ridge subcatchments they were slightly acidic and in the main catchment – slightly alkaline. In all catchments anions were predominated by sulfates – with the largest in the deforested catchment (31% mval/L). Also nitrates had very large share in the structure of the chemical composition of water, particularly in the forested catchment (15% mval/L). Interestingly, there were low levels of bicarbonates, particularly in the ridge catchments, with their share lower than sulfates and nitrates. Cations in all streams were predominated by calcium. The structure of the chemical composition of water of the Malinowski Stream, expressed by the average share of individual ions was as follows: SO4−HCO3−NO3−Cl−F−Ca−Na−Mg−K−NH4, and in the case of streams draining small ridge catchments: – SO4−NO3−HCO3−Cl−F−Ca−Na−Mg−K−NH4. Conductivity of water decreased together with increased water levels in streams during floods. In the deforested catchment this decrease was more evident. The reaction of nitrate concentration to the increase in water level was however different, as in the stream draining the forested catchment it decreased sharply, while in the deforested catchment it decreased slightly or remained at the similar level. In the dry periods the chemical composition of waters of the examined streams were subject to far less change than during the floods, with the changes of e.g. conductivity being much higher in the stream draining the forested catchment.
