Opis:
This paper compares thermal conditions of the soil in a forest stand and open terrain. Measurements were done in the spruce sawtimber stand and mountain grassland. The both sites are located close to the mountain ridge of Beskid Sądecki in the cold climatic zone at an elevation of 800 m a.s.l., slope 5° exposed to the East. The aim of the study was to describe the specificity of the forest soil thermal microclimate in the spruce stand with strong crown closure and mountain grassland. The paper presents the vertical and horizontal distribution of soil temperature in the summer during the varying weather conditions.

Opis:
The paper presents research results on the effect of biometrical characteristics of a stand and weather conditions on the dynamics of air and soil temperatures along a vertical profile in the 30 year−old larch and spruce poletimber stands. The both stands of the montane forest type grow in a moderately cold climatic zone at an elevation of 800 m a.s.l., slope 5°, eastern exposition.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to estimate the carrying capacity of forest roads with soil pavements. Deformation module and elastic deflection were used as characteristic parameters for road carrying capacity. 12 tested sections which were divided in groups were established 39 measurements using VSS and 66 measurements using deflectometr were made on all investigated segments. Average results of measurements were introduced in analysis from the particular group.

Opis:
Poland has rather rigorous regulations concerning forest tree seed zones. The high commercial quality of the coastal (northern) and upland (southern) beech provenances has stipulated the need to verify their performance also in the central Poland as possible quality seed source. A trail consisting of three open pollinated half−sib provenances has been established in Forest Experimental Station in Rogów in the year 1963. After the stand had reached the age of 44 years, a prognosis has been made focused on assessing the final age assortment structure of particular trees. The results show that the local population is at present the poorest and it is expected to produce the lowest wood quality in the mature stand. It is concluded that, following the results of 44 years, both the upland beech and – first of all – the coastal beech are due to their excellent performance potentially valuable seed source for the central Poland.

Opis:
European mistletoe (Viscum album L.) is a semi−parasitic plant attacking selected tree species. It adversely affects the functioning of its hosts especially at water management level. Scots pine infestation by mistletoe subspecies Viscum album ssp. austriacum becomes more and more common. Mistletoe has been proven to have a negative impact on Scots pine cones, seedlings and seeds quality. Thus, we decided to analyze the influence of this parasite on the radial growth of the Scots pine. The following hypotheses were tested: 1) mistletoe has negative effects on the radial growth of trees, and 2) trees infested with mistletoe are more sensitive to climatic factors, especially to low precipitation. The study was performed in western Poland, in the Scots pine excluded seed stand in the Bolewice Forest District (52°23'54'N, 16°05'01'E). We determined the association between pine radial growth and climatic factors (precipitation and temperature). Wood samples(cores) were taken from 15 infested and 15 non−infested trees and subjected to the standard procedure of dendrochronological dating. The study showed that radial growth rate decreased more intensively in trees infested by mistletoes, but it did not show the different climatic response of trees infested and non−infested, probably due to a short time of infestation. Scots pine is the main economic forest species in Poland and mistletoe can significantly affect the growth and development of pines. It is necessary to investigate the impact of mistletoe on stands and ecosystems, as well as to determine the methods of prevention and management of mistletoe tree stands.

Opis:
Applied studies concerning microclimatic description are an important element in the spatial shaping of the landscape. The objective of the studies was to determine the air temperature differentiation on forest glade in Kluczwoda Valley. The study area is located in Dolinki Krakowskie Landscape Park in VI Małopolska Natural Forest Region, 8 – Krakowsko−Częstochowska Upland Subregion. Basing on the results of two years (2003−2004) short series of microclimatic measurements carried out in five stations situated at a forest glade. A greater air temperature contrasts in the forest glade occurred between central part of glade and terrain next to south−east forest wall. A detailed characteristic of air temperature distribution in this area allowed developing a map illustrating spatial distribution.

Opis:
We analysed quality of water from the intakes in the Myślenice Forest District (S Poland). 8 springs were selected: 4 were located in the Natura 2000 area on the Mt. Polica and another 4 originated from the Harbutowice surroundings. Additionally water from 3 places on streams was gathered: 2 points were located in the ‘Las Gościba’ nature reserve and 1 in the water intake for the residents of Sułkowice municipality. Water samples were collected at the beginning of each month in the year 2016. The water temperature and flow rate were measured in the field. The hydrogen ion activity (pH), electrolytic conductivity (PEW) as well as the content of NH4+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl–, NO3–, SO4 2–, PO4 3– and F– were determined with Dionex 5000 ion chromatograph. We also marked the content of P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Cr, Cd, Ni and Pb using the ICP−OES emission spectrometer. All analyzes were carried out in the Laboratory of Geochemistry of Forest Environment and Areas Designated for Reclamation of the Forest Faculty of the University of Agriculture in Krakow. Water quality classification was made due to the tested properties in accordance with Regulation of the Minister of the Environment of 21st July 2016 on the classification of the state of surface water bodies and environmental quality standards for priority substances. The study confirmed differences in electric conductivity and the content of NH4+, SO4 2–, NO3 – due to the development of alimentation areas and the location of water collection.

Opis:
This paper reports 45 years of study on a provenance trail of European beech planted in the Rogów Experimental Forest in central Poland (190 m a.s.l.). Survival, growth and crown shape are analyzed in unthinned till the age of 40 years 3 provenances. The response to the thinning, and selected physico−mechanical properties of wood are analyzed. It is concluded that the poor quality and scarcely distributed local populations of beech is in many respects over−competed by the coastal beech provenance.
