Opis:
The age of old trees is often estimated only on the basis of trunk thickness. A more detailed method for estimation of the age of old oak trees is presented here, depending on species and environmental conditions. For oak trees growing singly or at forest edges, the mean annual ring width is over 2 mm, while in the forest interior ca. 1 mm for Quercus petraea, and 1.2−2.5 mm for Q. robur, depending on site fertility.

The determination of the best rotation age for trees and forest stands is one of the most decisive problems in forestry. It results from different aims of forest management. There are many criteria of selecting the product of forest utilization and deciding about stand maturity. They can be divided into biological, technical and economical ones. The most common are usually based on the rules of forest management. Different rotation age for the stand, dependent on various factors, always influences economical balance between bore costs and achieved income. Article presents the method of defining the economical rotation age based on the maximization of the income.

The study describes a new method of assessing the average age of the forest range with significant share of stands in the regeneration class. In proposed method, average age of stands in regeneration layer is calculated as a mean age of tree layer as well as layer of upgrowth, recruitment and saplings weighed by these layers fraction. Example of calculation of average age was performed for 7 ranges located in Kotlina Kłodzka (SW Poland) with total area of 48 653 ha. Average age of stands calculated by proposed method vary from 62 to 73 years and is lower in comparison to average age calculating according to current regulations from 5 to 14 years. Proposed method of calculation the average age of stands in shelter wood cutting system takes into account composed structure of stands in regeneration period by using age and share of all trees generation in stand.

The paper presents the tables for indirect determination of the age of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) trees basing on easy to measure dendrometric parameters. We elaborated empirical formulae that enable determination of tree age using total tree height, breast height diameter and stump diameter as the predictors. Data was collected in 40 pure silver birch stands growing on former farmlands in Mazowsze region (central Poland). Sample material consisted of data from the stem analyses of 200 trees and measurements of 600 stumps. Obtained equations explain 70−86% of the age variability. The best fit was achieved for joint use of total tree height and breast height diameter as the independent variables.

Opis:
The determination of the age at which a stand reaches harvest maturity is one of the most important decision−making problems in the forest management. The method of determining the rotation age depends primarily on the objectives and management practices (e.g. timber production, carbon sequestration), which determine the optimal age of trees for felling. The paper includes the methodological basis of optimization of the rotation age of stands due to the maximization of the accumulation of carbon in the aboveground woody biomass of forest trees. The research method involves two variants of calculating the optimal rotation age: grouping the stands by site class (W−1) and grouping the stands by management method (W−2). For each of the variants four data processing methods were used to optimize the rotation age of stands: allometric formulas (I−1), formulas for the calculation of the aboveground woody biomass (I−2), information on wood density (I−3), and IPCC method (I−4). The study assumes that the optimal rotation age from the point of view of maximizing the rate of carbon accumulation is when the value of increment in the average aboveground woody biomass production S(t)/(t) equals to the value of the current increment in this biomass production – ΔS. At this age, the standing volume R(t) and the volume of carbon stored in the growing stock Ww was calculated. The optimization method is analogous in all variants and approaches. The proposed method of optimizing the felling age of stands is illustrated on the example of Scots pine stands in 1 st site class (variant W−1, approach I−4). The 2014 data from the Information System of the State Forests were used for the calculations. The results (fig.) indicate that due to the maximization of the rate of carbon accumulation, the optimum rotation age for the Scots pine in 1st site class is 56 years. At that age the stand was characterized by the standing volume R(t) of about 305 m³/ha. The total carbon accumulation S(t) before this age was 85 t/ha.

Opis:
The stand volume is one of the forest inventory characteristic determined during the field work aimed at planning operations in the tree stands. Determining the optimal rotation age is an important decision issue in the forest management. In turn, the key factor that determines the choice of the method for determining the rotation age of the tree stands is the production target. Depending on the rotation age, a specific structure of quantity, quality and dimensions of particular timber assortments is obtained. It seems reasonable that the economic rotation age is one of the main criteria taken into account when planning forest management in tree stands or forest district. The aim of the paper is to assess the impact of growing stock on determining the rotation age of Scots pine stands in particular site index classes. We compared the tabular (i.e. based on data from yield tables) and real (i.e. based on data from the Information System of the State Forests) volume of pine stands. The analysis was based on the forest description data, the amount of the harvested timber and economic data: timber price as well as the costs of harvesting, skidding and production of assortments. The optimal economic rotation age was determined as the point of intersection of the curve describing the average and current increment of the value of Scots pine stands. The research showed that the rotation age of stands is related to the site index class and whether real or tabular results are analysed. The optimal rotation age for Scots pine tree stands is lower in the real data model from 10 to 23 years from that calculated on the basis of tabular data.

Opis:
The selection of the rotation time of a stand (from planting to final felling), i.e. the age at which stand reaches harvest maturity, is a key decision in forest management due to, inter alia, the amount and value of carbon stored in the forest. In this context, the basis for the economic optimisation of the rotation age of forests is to define the goal of forest production and desirable state of forests ensuring the achievement of the adopted aim. Therefore, the choice of the most suitable optimal moment of completing a production cycle and starting the subsequent one is very important in forest management. The aim of the performed analysis is to verify the empirical equations and conversion factors as well as to assess their suitability for determining the volume and value of standing timber and accumulation of carbon in the aboveground woody biomass. The verified equations will be used for modelling the optimal rotation age of forests due to the maximization of the rate of carbon accumulation in the aboveground woody biomass. The input data for the verification of equations and conversion factors were grouped according to the dominant species, 10−years age subclass and site index class. Four methodological approaches were used to analyse and estimate the amount of carbon accumulated in the aboveground woody biomass. With the assumption of a continuous use of forest land for timber production, the generated revenues will be same at the same level of costs in the subsequent production cycles. Analysing the results of the optimization of the age of felling maturity it should be noticed that these are the averaged values relating to the State Forests. They do not take into account local differences in the price of raw wood and production costs including the specific characteristics of individual trees or stands. The accuracy (quality) of calculating the average and current increment of stands and, in consequence, of the amount and value of the accumulated carbon is important for the effectiveness of the optimization of the amount of carbon accumulated in the aboveground woody biomass.

Paper identifies value and variability of slenderness of pedunculate oak stems in age range from 10 to 140 years describing slenderness of tree stems simultaneously using linear and multiplies regression. Strength of the connections between slenderness and selected dendrometrical traits was also defined. Dependence of the slenderness was investigated with respect to height, breast height diameter, and 10−years increment of breast height diameter, volume and 10−years volume increment in specific years of tree life. The slenderness of trees decreases with the growth of breast height diameter, breast height diameter increment, volume and volume increment. In case of height opposite tendency was observed. Dependence of slenderness on breast height diameter, height and age was analysed for all trees altogether as well. Slenderness was described additionally with linear and multivariate empirical equations.

The study was conducted in Lasy Parczewskie forest complex in eastern Poland in two periods: 1991−1993 and 2002−2004. We analysed the location of 384 nests belonging to 6 species of diurnal birds of prey that are common in Poland: Honey Buzzard (Pernis apivorus), White−tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla), Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), Buzzard (Buteo buteo), and Lesser Spotted Eagle (Aquila pomarina). We found that all species preferred particular age classes of tree stands (Fig. 2). Sparrowhawk chose tree−stands at age of between 30 and 50 years, Honey Buzzard – older than 50 years, Buzzard and Lesser Spotted Eagle – older than 70 years, Goshawk – older than 80 years, and White−tailed Eagle – older than 90 years. Beside the fact that the Parczew Forests are cultivated and harvested in a common manner, they play an important role for all the species concerned.

Influence of forest age on fallow deer food availability was studied in two localities in Poland. There were some differences between them, but in both cases pole−sized and mature stands were more abundant in food than the younger age classes. Fallow deer food availability was lowest in mature beech stands. Comparisons with other studies on this issue made in Poland showed that results are different depending on deer species considered. It comes from different food eaten by every species and abundance of various plants in forest age classes may follow different patterns. Besides, this study has shown that it is very hard to find general pattern of relation between forest age and deer food abundance for various regions, because this will depend on tree species dominating in the forest as well as forest management practices.

Opis:
Productivity of the assimilating apparatus is commonly defined as an increment in volume, most typically of the stem or trunk, per unit of crown size. In this paper the productivity of the assimilating organ (CPtwn1) is calculated as a quotient of the average annual increment in stem volume from a 5−year period (iv1) and the volume of twigs with needles (twnv), determined by xylometry methods (fluid displacement method). The experimental material comprised measurements taken on 200 Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) in 8 pure pine stands growing in western Poland (tab. 1). Using the calculated sizes of assimilating apparatus, their arithmetic means and coefficients of variation were calculated for each stand (tab. 2, 3). Additionally, mean crown productivity within each Kraft's class comprising the dominant trees (classes 1, 2 and 3) as well as in the dominated trees (classes 4 and 5) were determined. The strength of the relationship between CPtwn1 and diameter at breast height (d1.3), height (h) and volume of leaved twigs (twnv) was calculated (tab. 4). Moreover, a two−way analysis of variance was conducted to assess the statistical significance of the effect of age of the stand and biosocial class of tree position in the stand (within the dominant trees and the dominated trees) on productivity of the assimilating apparatus. Mean productivity of analysed Scots pine crowns takes the highest values in the youngest stand (0.60 m³), while the lowest – in the oldest stand (0.34 m³). In the youngest, 25−year old pine stand, mean productivity of the assimilating apparatus in trees forming the dominated trees is by 124% greater than that of trees forming the dominant trees. An opposite situation is found in the oldest, 93−year−old stand, where mean productivity of the dominant trees is over 1.5 greater than that recorded in the dominated trees. Statistically significant effect of the stand age on productivity of the assimilating apparatus was observed (tab. 5). However, affiliation of a tree to the dominant or dominated trees does not result in such an effect. On the other hand, there is an interaction between age of the stand and its affiliation to the Kraft's classes. This means that the affiliation of trees to the dominant trees or the dominated trees and its effect on mean productivity of the assimilating apparatus depend on the age of stand.

The objective of the research was to analyse the level of fungal infection of spruce wood in the mature and overmature stands and determine the age of their technical maturity. Trees from seven stands aged 49−137 were examined. Age was found to have a statistically significant effect on the level of infection of trees caused by wood−rotting fungi. A high infection level was also detected in the bark−stripped spruces of the lower storeys of multi−storeyed stands. The obtained results enabled determination of the age at which spruces are considered mature (technical maturity) for felling at 80−90 years.
