Opis:
The study, whose results are presented in the article, was aimed at identifying the structure of the phenomenon so-called late births, which takes place when both parents, at the time of the child’s birth, exceeded the age determining the beginning of – in the case of women – “late motherhood”, and in the case of men – “late fatherhood”. In order to know this issue, the data contained in the Demographic Yearbook (for years 2014–2018) was analyzed. The focus was also on understanding the causes of late births phenomenon and its consequences for the child. For this purpose, an analysis of the content of discussions on four Internet forums (active from 2009–2018) and comments posted on the article on the Internet regarding late motherhood was carried out. It was found out that in the years 2014–2018 the number of late births and their share in the total number of births increased (from 5.27% to 6.72%). Increases in the numbers of late births were noted for each of the fi ve-year age group, particularly clearly in the confi guration: father aged 40–44 and mother 45 and older. The following were recognized as the causes of the phenomenon of late births: postponing the implementation of reproductive plans, conception of a child, hoping that the child will be the guardian of aging parents, long period between attempts to conceive a child and pregnancy. Furthermore, it has also been found that Internet users see more restrictions than advantages of being a child born in the later years of parents’ life.

Opis:
Background: Intrauterine fetal death is a potential risk in each stage of pregnancy, regardless of the mother’s age. In Poland in 2015, new standards of care were introduced for women with obstetric failure. Aim of the study: This study aimed to analyze intrauterine fetal demise in the context of late motherhood. Material and methods: Medical documentation and a semi-structured interview were used. Case report: A 41-year old primipara in 37 weeks of pregnancy, who had not felt fetal movements for 2 days, was diagnosed with intrauterine fetal demise. The pregnancy was uneventful before, but the patient suffered from hypertension and severe obesity. As a result of induced labor, a male neonate weighing 2260 g, 49 cm long, with no signs of vital functions, was born. After the birth, it was established that the child died due to an umbilical cord accident. The mother was given the appropriate time to see the child for the last time. During delivery and hospitalization, the patient’s privacy was ensured, she was isolated from other women in labor and new mothers and was assisted by her family. During the hospital stay, the patient was under the care of the obstetrician, midwife and clinical psychologist. She was discharged from the hospital after 6 days. Conclusions: The loss of a child is one of the most traumatic experiences for a mother, particularly in the case of older mothers. A woman’s fertility declines with age, so getting pregnant again might prove extremely difficult for older women.

Opis:
Postponing motherhood is a widespread phenomenon across developed countries, however only few studies look into very late motherhood in post-socialist countries using individual level data. In this study, I look at the context of the first childbirth in Poland in the midst of the political transformation of 1989. Employing sequence analysis I reconstructed life trajectories of women who experienced the transition to adulthood during the late 1980’s and the early 1990’s and have just completed their fertility histories. Individual data from the 2011 GGS-PL and the 2011 FAMWELL Survey were used. Comparing paths of mothers’ lives, I searched for differences in educational, professional and conjugal careers between women who gave birth before the age of 30 and after the age of 35. The results show how various life careers crisscross over the life course leading women to late motherhood.

Opis:
W artykule podejmuję tematykę związaną z medycznymi, socjologicznymi i pedagogicznymi aspektami „późnego macierzyństwa” kobiet w Polsce.
In the article entitled “Experiencing late motherhood – biographies of women” the author deals with the medical, sociological and pedagogical aspects of “late motherhood” experienced by Polish women. Based on a qualitative study using the biographic method carried out through a narrative interview of four women and an analysis of two biographies published on Internet blogs, the author presents the motifs of late pregnancy, experiencing child birth, the ways of coping with several social roles of mother, wife and employee and the organisation of free time of young mature mothers. The deep bond with the child, self-realisation through motherhood and respecting a child’s needs by mature mothers were also analysed.
