Opis:
The aim of the study is to outline the role of language as the most effective tool of communication accessible to human beings in the context of international communication. Intercultural communication allows to indicate the diversity of intentions with which we enter into communicative relationships. It also highlights the need to take into account cultural difference in order to achieve understanding: the greater the extent to which diversity is taken into account and the greater the accompanying effort to reconstruct cultural beliefs, the higher the efficiency of communication.

Opis:
The article aims to describe the main assumptions of the so-called “Great Theory of Literacy” formulated by authors such as Walter Jackson Ong, Jack Goody, Erick Havelock and other researchers, representing various fields of science (philology, history, anthropology, communication, etc.). The basic assumption of the theory is the existence of profound differences between orality and literacy, which affect the general shape of communication, culture and society. The theory I analyze focuses primarily on confrontation, on contrasting the characteristics of oral and written language, as well as the accompanying mental and communicational contexts. At the same time, it should be noted that the Great Theory of Literacy has provoked many polemic voices that criticize the findings of Ong, Havelock and Goody. In this text I present the most important critical voices and arguments and try to determine to what extent the methodological characteristics of both the Great Theory of Literacy and theories formulated in counteraction to it could contribute to the dispute and to what extent this is a constructive discussion. My main hypothesis concerns the relatively small part of linguistic reflection in the reflection of both theoreticians of the Great Theory of Literacy and their opponents, which can significantly contribute to difficulties with the use of theoretical constructs on the basis of language and communication practice.

The purpose of the study was to analyse differences in speech, language and communication skills between students with mild intellectual disabilities using a narrative text written in easy-to-read text (experimental group), and students with mild intellectual disabilities using a book containing the same content but written in ordinary text (control group). The results indicate that students with mild intellectual disabilities who listen to the easy-to-read text exhibit superior communication skills in individual conversations with the teacher. Significant differences occur in all three measured variables. The research is important contribution in understanding of benefits of easy-to-read texts.

Opis:
Theoretical background: It is a well-known fact that a name should be original and distinguish a business from the competition. It should also meet several other criteria, such as being easy to pronounce and remember, and being connected with the specifics of the company’s operations. Company names, as with any other names, are important because people react to a word the same way they react to the object this name denotes. Therefore, the length of a company name and the words it contains are important. Moreover, in the marketing nomenclature what carries the most significance is not the word itself but the so-called connotation, i.e. the direct reference to the object of the word and the entire set of features connected with it. When creating their own company names, entrepreneurs often use this aspect to better communicate with their target audience. This is enforced by both the growing competition and the expectations of consumers. In recent years, considerable innovativeness can be observed on the part of entrepreneurs who depart from traditional terms and decide on unusual names.Purpose of the article: The following article presents trends in Polish company names from the perspective of marketing efficiency on the one hand, and linguistic innovation on the other. The purpose of the article is to determine the kind of linguistic changes and their assessment from the viewpoint of communication effectiveness.Research methods: The empirical section includes the analysis of 247 names of companies that provide hairdressing services, while the theoretical section concerns the issues of creating a brand and the lexical side of it. In particular, the considerations concern the linguistic norms and marketing principles behind creating company names.Main findings: The findings indicate that the names ceased to be original but from a marketing perspective they became more effective. The names became more efficient in terms of marketing communication, for example, the words "studio" and "academy" (studio or akademia in Polish) carry a lot of content and connote expertise, knowledge and elite. Of course, the name and surname of an owner (which were popular in the past for hairdressing companies' names) does not include such information. Of further interest is that foreign sounding words have also disappeared almost completely; in particular, the number of words from English has decreased. Therefore, by using words with a more universal meaning and domestication in the Polish language, a company evokes positive reactions and associations, which are very important in the first contact between a customer and a company.

Opis:
In this essay, we shall attempt to highlight W. S. Burroughs’s concept of language being a virus from outer space as remarkably different from the pertinent views of any other Beat writer. If Kerouac saw language as an efficient medium of expressing the immediacy and unpredictability of experience, while Ginsberg used it as just as efficient instrument of voicing sociopolitical protest or Buddhist truths (following in the footsteps of Romantic transcendentalists or Whitman), Burroughs saw it rather as an enigmatic, alien force. The latter could effectively disturb human understanding and communication, or even be used as a means of mental/social political oppression and manipulation on the global scale. Consequently, this, arguably, most atypical Beat writer appears to be a forerunner of a relevant trend in American postmodern fiction, represented e. g. by Ronald Sukenick or Raymond Federman, with their implied disbelief in language as a cognitively reliable means of handling human experience or reality as such: for example, by the lavishly applied typographical experimentation.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to raise the questions of style and communication as universal notions and as culture specific phenomena. Different definitions of style are given and the perspectives of two main cultural views dealing with this subject are shown. The points of view of representative of Polish scholars is compared with the focus on linguistic perception of style in Mandarin Chinese. The presentation of the most important essentials of the Professor's Gajda individual style has been chosen as he has been studying various aspects of style for over forty years and he uses concepts typical for Slavic and European scholars. A predominance of analyses of actual texts is based on a comparison of his own text on academic style. It also contains selected most characteristic elements from his other texts and a comparison of his early comments on style and stylistics and the latest definitions thereof. The understanding of style as a concept connected with the Western philosophical, aesthetic and linguistic tradition is compared with the Eastern i.e. – Chinese views on this phenomenon to track differences and similarities showing the universal character of some concepts connected with human language and cognition.

Opis:
The aim of the paper was to described substantial symptoms making possible a clinical differential diagnosis of autism and Asperger syndrome. Those differences do not merely reflect the intensification of negative features but that Autism and Asperger syndrome are separate syndromes, which, however, share a common spectrum of symptoms. Making a differential diagnosis is essential due to different therapeutic and educational needs of children suffering from those syndromes. The most evident differences are language and communication, manipulative behaviours, social relations as well as manual skills. The first important difference is language, which has been neglected so far since the research concentrated on communication and its disorders. While language is of a high diagnostic value that allows early identification of symptoms specific for Asperger syndrome. The second difference is a very high level of manipulative behaviours in Asperger syndrome which leads to disorders in social functioning of such individuals. Therefore, dealing with manipulation is a significant therapeutic task. At the same time, manipulative behaviours occurring in Asperger syndrome should be distinguished from resistence manifested by autistic children. Moreover, children with Asperger show a need of social relations despite considerable lowering of social competencies, and failures to communicate provoke the intensification of deviant behaviours. Finally, children with autism and Asperger syndrome vary in the level of manual skills. Though initial picture may be very similar, the potential of people with Asperger syndrome for gaining proper graphomotor skills is considerably higher due to the lack of deep disorders in motor planning.

The study is devoted to a discussion on selected issues relating to the EU and national legislation which determine the process of the mainstream communication with third-country nationals in the Police Detention Centres. The study is a part of the ongoing research project of the Department of Foreign Languages of the Academy of the Police Force in Bratislava and the Bureau of the Border and Foreign Police of the Presidium of the Police Force, Slovakia titled Intercultural Communication with third-country nationals in the Police Detention Centres. The research attempts to find the answer to the following question: What means of intercultural communication (verbal and non-verbal) do police officers use with third-country nationals for mutual understanding, avoiding conflicts and correct adherence to human rights? Following the findings of the intermediate legislative and applied research, the author points out the main reasons which lead to certain difficulties in performing understandable communication in the Police Detention Centres such as loopholes in the EU legislation, non-conformity of the EU and national legislation in using the state (national) vs foreign language in official service communication with third-country nationals whose stay is unauthorised in the territory of the Slovak Republic, and in the EU and the Schengen Area, and their residence or entry into the Schengen Area is detected as irregular and subsequently clarified, with respective accountability.

The contemporary education is oriented towards shaping diverse competencies, especially those in the scope of interpersonal skills. Language is a basic tool of communication, thus shaping the skill in using the Polish language is one of the major didactic and educative tasks of kindergartens and schools. The following article presents a creative concept of enhancing a child’s speech development through the Japanese kamishibai theatre. This type of art stimulates a child’s sensibility, encourages him or her to start a discussion, to give his/her own opinions and judgments. Due to this, a child enriches his or her vocabulary and develops skills in formulating longer utterances.
Sztuka ta pobudza wrażliwość dziecka, zachęca do podejmowania dyskusji, wyrażania opinii i sądów. Dzięki temu dziecko wzbogaca swoje słownictwo i rozwija umiejętność formułowania dłuższych wypowiedzi.

What should be considered the central problem of linguaecology is the issue of protection of language quality (its various manners of existence: language use, system as well as individual and collective linguistic awareness) against destructive human impact, in particular culture, and protection of human health (individuals and human communities) against harmful language. The ecological nature of linguistic communication is determined not only by its axiological (emotional and moral) dimension but also, and foremost, by the intention not to harm oneself and others. In order to meet the challenges of our times (from climate crisis to hate speech), we need to oppose the view that human beings are selfi sh and aggressive by nature. This view contributes to us becoming like that. However, the true human nature is different: human beings are decent, they are homo cooperans.
