Opis:
In the article attention has been paid to the identity of a place understood as sentimental attachment of the inhabitants to their dwelling place, the sense of bonds and responsibility for organization, maintenance and utilization of the place. Every place has its own distinct, specific character, and is exceptional for those users who feel good there because they create the place together and are responsible for it. Attention has also been paid to transformation of spatial management and landscape, which can bring about the loss of the identity of the place, shaped throughout decades. The valuable components of the extremely precious landscape of the Barycz valley have been pointed out, and directives of shaping new building as well as modernization of the already existing one have been formulated. The research area was constituted by localities situated within the range of "Dolina Baryczy" Landscape Park.

The article presents the Vige-land Park in Oslo and the Tarot Garden of Niki de Saint Phalle (in Capalbio, Italy). The first one has been created for almost fifty years (1900-_1947) from the initial sketches to the final result, which contains 192 sculptures with more than 600 figures, all modeled in full size by Gustav Vigeland. In 1924, the City of Oslo decided that the sculptures should be placed on the Frogner Park hill slope, where the artist added the architectural setting. The main axis of composition links up: the main entrance with wrought iron gates, the renovated and adapted bridge with 58 bronze sculptures on the parapets, the fountain with six giants holding the vessel of falling water, the Monolith plateau and ,,Wheel of Life", composed of human figures swirling in a circle. The Monolith, 14.12 meters high - carved out of a single block of stone is situated in the central point of the park. 36 groups of granite statues which are surrounding the column portray people in situations depicting the cycle of life. The Tarot Garden explores the human condition in quite different way. The monumental sculptures combined with fancy forms of buildings, all covered by brightly colored mosaic, reflect the metaphysical aspects represented by 22 tarot cards. Niki de Saint Phalle began her work on the garden in 1979 (with her husband Jean Tinguely and the team of friends) and officially opened it to the public in May 1998. The smaller figures are hidden in the wood, while the Main Arcanas (The High Priestress, The Magician, The Empress, The Sun and The Tower) surround the artificial lake in the middle of composition. Although the presented sculpture parks have been created in different periods and styles, they both illustrate the role of material in landscape architecture.

The aim of this article is to present the role of landscape in shaping the image of cities, and to stress the need of reinterpreting the approaches and activities related to city landscape. The general remarks on the need and attitude to the landscape protection have been presented, as well as some positive examples of the activities related to enhance or restore the green and recreation areas within the cities, or create them on the areas previously of other functions. In contrary, some threats related to the development and the quality of life in metropolis, caused by wrong decision concerning the townscape, have been shown. The case study of Gdansk sea-shore area was chosen as an example illustrating these thesis. These study cases prove, that there is a need of strategic planning of city landscape, and of development of special tools and methods. The landscape studies should be connected with the processes of town planning, especially in the context of rapid urbanization, technological and social changes, and growing consumption in relation to the environment.

Shocking though this juxtaposition may seem, an analysis between the relations between the high-rise at the public park brings interesting conclusions concerning the manner in which a city develops. The article presents a short theoretical introduction followed by a number of case studies from New York, Tokyo, Kraków, and Gdańsk, with the idea behind being to draw conclusions useful in the current development of Polish cities. Naturally, the sizes and numbers of high-rise buildings in Polish cities cannot stand comparison to the skyscraping "forests", yet the ambitions of the authorities of Polish cities, specialists in urban matters, and developers alike frequently reach those heights and models. In Polish cities, the relationship between the dynamic development (which may be symbolised by the skyscraper) and natural and recreational values of the place (concentrated in the public park) increasingly often as sumes the form of a conflict. Standing on one side of the barricade are the developers and those who use the effects of their work, while on the other, there are the residents - neighbours of the places where the construction is to take place. Developers want to build, residents protest because they do not want to lose greens in their vicinity. Conflicts of this type as a rule last long and bring no result that could be considered a win-win situation for all the parties involved. Finding space for public parks is far more difficult in the extreme conditions of great metropolises than in Poland, yet there such dilemmas have been known far longer than here, which has allowed foreign municipal authorities, planners and resident groups to acquire greater experience in finding sites, and establishment and maintenance of parks, and more successes in conflict solving. Following their examples, one may learn how to achieve the balance between "hard" i.e. developed and "soft" i.e. natural structure of the city. The Polish case studies in turn allow observing characteristic barriers that make maintaining the balance in cityscapes harder. Their number includes: 1. lack of planning instruments to allow efficient balancing in the development of the "hard" and "soft" structures in the city, 2. lack of skill or at times goodwill to use the existing instruments, 3. lack of tradition of co-operation and also of trust between the three sectors of the economy: private, public and social.

Opis:
In the cultural landscape of the Częstochowa region there are still noticeable, actions by the 19th and early 20th century owners of the local estates. Apart from the cemeteries, the only old tree groups in the country are former manor-parks and gardens. The influence of landowners is visible in spatial planning, farm plans, tree-lanes etc. The majority of the manor-parks were established in the 19th century. However, the best reconstructed are the changes in the history of the park in Kruszyna. This 17th century geometric park was reshaped in the centuries that followed, but traces of the old formation are still noticeable. A few large landscape-parks were formed in the 19th century. Some of them were designed by the famous green areas designers - Franciszek Szanior and Walerian Kronenberg. Nevertheless, the majority of the parks had the character of large gardens - smaller than 1 ha area. The integral parts of the park set were orchards- presently non-existent. The vital role in the composition of a manor-park was played by water. The rivers Warta and Wiercica were used in the plans of the parks. Ponds were planned not only for serving a purpose but also for aesthetic reasons. Other aspects of landscape planning were tree lanes and rows planted by the roads from manor to farms and other estates. Nowadays, progress of the degradation of the cultural landscape is ever noticeable. The majority of the manor-parks were demolished after 1945. Those parks which have survived are still neglected. Of numerous manor-ponds only few have remained. The rest were drained and the former water system was transformed. In recent years the progression of destroying tree lanes could be observed. Among the many reasons for these processes are: the lack of awareness of the cultural landscape - importance in local society and the lack of strict legal regulations to preserve local landscape.

Opis:
Eastern Park is situated in the southeastern part of Wrocław, in Księże Małe district. Its history is relatively short in comparison with other green areas of this type in Wrocław. It was arranged at the beginning of the 20th century, in answer to the needs of citizens of an intensively expanding city. The exact date of origin of the conception by Paul Dannenberg is unknown, but it is known that earthwork was carried out from 1927 until 1929. Its specific location on an island surrounded by water of the Lower and Upper Oława rivers had an influence on species growing in the park (species of wetland area). Most of the trees are native species. The Forest stand is dominated by alder (Alnus glutinosa), besides these there is a significant number of oak (Quercus robur), maple (Acer campestre) and ash trees (Fraxinus exelsior). There are also a few interesting foreign species like: wingnut (Pterocarya fraxinifolia), oak (Quercus palustris), birch (Betula papyrifera) and cork tree (Phelodendron amurense). The park has remained in almost unchanged shape until the present day. Natural arrangement of plants and a great number of streams makes Eastern Park a place with great untapped recreational potential.

This paper describes and assesses Richard Haag’s controversial campaign to create Seattle’s Gas Works Park. Haag’s plan is significant in the history of environmental aesthetics, because it was the first to preserve remnants of industrial heritage in a United States city park, and because Haag appealed to aesthetics when making his case. I argue Haag’s campaign was persuasive, and I claim the former gas works now function within the park in much the same way as the ruins of parks of previous centuries. And because the structures are now ruins, they do not sanctify the destructive function they used to have. Finally, I claim that human intervention in abandoned, derelict, or post-industrial sites can be worthwhile if it successfully conveys a change in use or function of those sites, thus bringing beauty out of blight.

The author deals with the problem of a “dead” park. The fallen landscape construction is like a necropolis. The refl ections are organized around Fazaniec – a border park established in Upper Silesia in the mid-19th century by count Hans Ulrich von Schaffgotsch. The death of the park after 1945 is interpreted in connection with wildness, darkness, decline, transgression as well as being beyond culture and social emotions.

Man, from the very beginning of his existence, was and still is dependent on water. Over the centuries this relationship underwent and still undergoes constant changes. At the early stage of being on Earth, Homo sapiens were completely dependent on the natural watercourses and other water tanks. Moreover, they relied on their extraordinary force. Nowadays, thanks to technical development, water can be easily delivered to the most inaccessible contact with its natural element we, as people, remain helpless. Still, we admire it. Water is not only the essential part of life but also an important and highly attractive component which shapes the closest surroundings of people. Depending on different times, water was given different titles. It was more or less exposed. As always, the skilfully winding ribbons of water flowing lazily through the lowland areas,as well as impetuous mountain creeks, have made a huge impact on our senses. Nonetheless in the past, with all the certainty, there was a different approach towards water in households and rural and urban areas, as well as in gardens or parks. Nowadays the value of such facilities has reached historical and monumental meaning. The fact that man feels soothed in the proximity water due to its visual and auditory sensation is of a great importance.
