- The aim of the article is to present the beginnings of the formation of the legend of one of the Bar Confederation commanders, and at the same time a hero of the American Independence War, Kazimierz Pułaski. The fame of the best military commander of the Bar Confederation assumed the shape of Pułaski's Bar legend, that was a reproduction of the myth of a knight/soldier in the context of the social demand for the image of a hero giving his life in the struggle against the enemy. For Pułaski's legend the fact was significant that initially the legend was completely positive, but after the attempt to abduct King Stanislaus August Poniatowski it also absorbed a negative component, in this way creating Pułaski's ambiguous image. However, soon Pułaski's Bar legend was affected by the legend of the Bar Confederation whose aim was independence, and as a result it started Pułaski's pro-independence legend, additionally inspired by the American Independence War. In consequence in the Polish literature of the Romantic period there were two Kazimierz Pułaski's legends: the legend of the Sarmatian age, and the pro-independence one.
