Opis:
Background: Testing general knowledge on antibiotics, and the rational application of them in practice, is very important in order to understand the need to educate society and the irreversible problem of antibiotic resistance. Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to analyze the knowledge and practice of parents regarding responsible antibiotic therapy in respiratory infections. Material and methods: This study was carried out among 317 parents aged 22-61 (M = 34.74; SD = 6.31). The diagnostic survey method was applied, and the research tool was a survey questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using the IBM SPSS Statistics 25.0 statistical package. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Viruses were identified as the most frequent cause of respiratory tract infection by respondents (n = 245, 77.3%). According to 91.2% of participants, antibiotics are used against a bacterial infection. Almost all (n = 315, 99.4%) respondents are of the opinion that antibiotics ought to be applied after a medical examination if they are definitely recommended, 97.5% (n = 309) believed that taking antibiotics could not be stopped at any time, whereas 10.4% (n = 33) used antibiotics without contacting a physician. 15.1% (n = 48) of the respondents used the antibiotics left over from previous treatment. Conclusions: The respondents possess knowledge concerning indications for antibiotic treatment and on their rational use, but unfortunately, not everyone uses this knowledge in practice.

Opis:
Background. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a product in the manufacture of Bis-GMA, which is commonly used in dentistry, and is known to have a number of adverse effects. Objectives. The aim of this study is to evaluate to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice based on exposure and handling of BPA containing materials among dental surgeons for better understanding about the level of care rendered to the patients. Material and methods. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 400 dental surgeons in Southern India. The questionnaire consisted of 20 objective type questions out of which ten questions assessed knowledge and five questions assessed the attitude and five questions to understand the practice related measures taken by the dentist. The data collected were analysed using SPSS version 23. Results. A total of 402 responses were collected for this online questionnaire survey over a period of 2 months. It was found that females showed higher knowledge and attitude towards exposure to BPA which was statistically significant when compared to males. It showed that dentists with more than 20 years of practice had a higher level of knowledge. Though most of the groups agreed fairly on safety practice to be undertaken related to BPA exposure in their clinics, the ones with experience more than 20 years displayed the least positive attitude and dentists with 6-10 years of practice had the least positive behaviour among all. Conclusions. In spite of having a good knowledge regarding the harmful effects of BPA, dental surgeons are not very cautious while using materials containing them on a regular basis. Therefore, there is a need to enhance the awareness with the help of Continuing Dental Education programs or proper instructions on the packaging.

Objective. This study examined associations between socio-demographic characteristics and knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to COVID-19 among healthcare workers in Bangkok, Thailand. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional online survey was distributed among healthcare workers in Bangkok, Thailand from July - August 2021. Results. A total of 637 responses were received. Most participants were clinical workers (68.4%), and nearly half (47.3%) had been at risk of infection with COVID-19 (ever screening test). Binary logistic regression analysis found associations between high knowledge scores and the 26–35-year age group (OR=1.776-1.562, 95%CI 1.021–2.853), having a bachelor’s degree or higher (OR=1.672, 95%CI 1.058–2.644), and clinical workers (OR=1.784, 95CI% 1.188–2.678). The 36 year and above age group was associated with higher attitude scores (OR=2.406, 95%CI 1.567–3.695). Higher practice scores were associated with females (OR=1.913, 95%CI 1.057–3.464), and clinical workers (OR=1.903, 95CI% 1.170–3.095). Correlation analysis found a positive correlation between practice scores and knowledge (r=0.322, p <0.001) and attitudes (r=0.263, p <0.001). Conclusion. Although healthcare workers demonstrated overall high knowledge, attitude, and practice scores, this study identified several factors that influence KAP. This study can guide public health strategies regarding healthcare workers during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand.

Opis:
A particular aspect of theological knowledge, which arises from the intellectual search based on faith, is the exceptionally favorable opportunity it provides to overcome the antimonies of science and life. After all, theology not only engages reason and faith but also the will and love. On this basis, scientia fidei (science of faith) claims to make sense of everything, meaning of wisdom, at the center of which can be found truth and life, which both accord with it. Moreover, any systematic reflection on faith should take place within specific context that is understood as its basic challenge. This does not mean that it is possible to evaluate or correct the faith according to so-called “life experience”, but rather that life can be ordered according to faith. In other words, any interest in human agere (act) should not lose sight of esse (being). From this point of view, science of faith should not only resolve the tension between rational knowing and mystery, but also protect against one-sidedness and superficiality through competent and particular knowledge that defines who man is and determines how he should act. A utilitarian approach to empirical science as well as contemporary philosophy, which does not consider wisdom and the question of truth, is incompetence in this regard.

Opis:
BackgroundHand hygiene (HH) is the simplest and the most fundamental means of hospital-acquired infection (HAI) prevention in both hospitals and long-term care facilities (LTCFs) which differ as to their structure, organization and epidemiology. The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of, and attitudes towards, compliance with the HH guidelines by medical staff of LTCFs and hospitals, in the context of infection control organization.Material and MethodsThe study was carried out among medical staff of LTCFs and hospitals using an anonymous questionnaire designed by the authors. The questionnaire was composed of 22 questions.ResultsAmong 237 healthcare workers from LTCFs and hospitals (51.5% vs. 48.5%), the vast majority were women (97.5% vs. 94.8%), who were nurses (86.9% vs. 91.3%) with 21–30 years of experience (28.5% vs. 44.3%). The respondents, both working in hospitals and in LTCFs, declared that there was some surveillance of HAIs in their workplace – 78.8% vs. 87.8%, respectively, p = 0.082. However, the respondents from LTCFs significantly more often than those working in hospitals declared the lack of HAI registration (12.3% vs. 0.9%, p = 0.002), as well as the lack of surveillance of multidrug-resistant microorganisms (16.4% vs. 4.3%, p = 0.010). Although the knowledge of WHO HH guidelines was declared by over 90% of the respondents, only about 70% of them (with no significant difference between both types of facilities) properly indicated the 5 moments of HH.ConclusionsThe results of the study indicate that the organizational conditions and practice of HH in LTCFs and hospitals present some differences. Therefore, there is a need for observational studies concerning HH in the context of the structure and organization of infection control, as they are necessary for the development and implementation of effective programs to improve the situation in this field.

Opis:
In a follow-up to Ryszard Nycz’s work Culture as Verb this article outlines a new way of bringing forward his great project. The challenge it has to face is the cognitive dilemma that lurks at the intersection of the humanities and the sciences, or, in other words, the dissonance between the traditional paradigm of accumulating and developing the store of cultural knowledge and cognitive procedures that underpin new, experimental and inductive knowledge with a potential to effect qualitative change. The article contends that Nycz’s study allows us to bypass that dilemma. The ‘Third Way’, as it is called here, would open up new forms of innovation, i.e. not just knowledge whose value is determined by its utility for the systems of late capitalism, but a mode of concrete practice of rediscovering the outer world for the humanities. In the process of capturing and transforming of that world, the metaphors of embodied labour and of knowledge production (conceptualized as the verb) function as extraordinarily important tools of the humanities reinvented as a practical, embodied theory.

Opis:
Excellence and the related notions, such as competence, expertise and expert performance, elude precise definition. Historically, these notions have been approached in different ways by scholars developing their theories in a number of disciplines. These theories are discussed in the article with special reference to determinants of excellence in business and in light of the anthropocentric theory of human languages. The author’s main hypothesis is that all these three notions refer to the inherent, non-transferable properties of human beings and not to organizations. Referring to the dominant theory of deliberate practice as a key factor contributing to expertise, the author discusses other scholars’ counter arguments and formulates, in addition, his own reservations based on the specificity of business practice. These reservations relate to the diversity of the business field and to certain impact factors inextricably linked with business activity that distinguish this domain from many others.

Opis:
Development of a high-quality educational process has long been the main aim of the whole educational system. When talking about the educational system, we mostly refer to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th stages of education, the organisers, moderators and evaluators of which are teachers using their knowledge and experience, and the subjects of which – regardless of the educational stage – are students. Consequently, the whole educational system should focus on students, their needs and abilities, while teachers should be well-prepared to their roles, as the success of the process of knowledge acquisition by students depends on them. This is why teachers’ subject-matter knowledge and their ability to deliver it gained during their professional education guarantee good organisation of the educational process and, as a consequence, its quality. Similarly to the process of foreign language teaching, where the most important skills are related to the practical application of lexical and grammatical knowledge in communication, the education of foreign language teachers should focus on the development of the skill to apply in practice their knowledge of psycho-pedagogy, didactics and foreign language teaching methodology within individual educational activities. Future teachers, when completing subsequent stage of their professional education, should demonstrate not only a high level of theoretical knowledge but also – or perhaps mostly – well-developed skills of future teachers-educators.

The article aims at analysing a link between culture and a research practice. The former is referred to the propositional attitudes, where this reference is of intersubjective nature. The latter is given in terms of the human interactions. Their relevant component, that is, an individual’s physical action is an instance of a physical event. The author’s claim is that culture conditions the research practice. This practice is interwoven into other social practices (like commonsense or religious), so that the relation between the social and the cultural is of a holistic and dynamic nature. The author discusses a number of positions which have dealt with the particular topics or problems of the link in question to show how many facets this link may have. Finally, the analysis is to reveal the multicultural dimension in which the research practice may be approached.

Opis:
This article asks the question to what extent Ryszard Nycz’s ambitious project of cultural practice outlined in his book Culture as Verb succeeds in opening up ‘a new form of knowledge’ and thus equipping the humanities with a fresh validity. Nycz takes up the poststructuralist concept of the humanities as a site of alternative or subversive knowledge, founded on the principles of interpretation and textual dispersion, and refocuses it on involvement (participation) and binary oppositions (borders), i.e. human vs. nonhuman, or nature vs. culture as a construct. The article, rather than addressing the issues of involvement and borders (liminality), concentrates instead on the contradictions that Nycz’ s theory gives rise to when applied to history, time and the emergence of subjectivity (identity). There is nothing objectionable about the proposition that temporal change is at the very core of culture, yet its locus must be sought not in the proclamations of individual agents, but in the conceptual ruptures that expose and reveal the boundaries of (collective) consciousness and unconsciousness, i.e. the operation of contingency.

Opis:
This article aims to discuss the problem of a relationship between reflection and identification in the community of EFL teaching practitioners. The basic tenet is that reflection enables individuals to construct and supply reification to community knowledge, which, in turn, allows for their identification as legitimate members of the community. Identity is neither static nor pre-given. It is built as one moves through life and changes according to one’s environmental needs, one’s interests and interactions. To expound and exemplify these tenets, two samples of conversations in a community of language teaching practitioners are analyzed. The analysis aspires to reveal a dialectic relationship between the processes of reflection and identification.
