Opis:
Radiostrontium 85Sr sorption experiments were carried out at 4°C and 20°C using natural samples of the epiphytic foliose lichen Hypogymnia physodes. Thalli were incubated in water solutions containing 10 5 to 10 1 mol.l 1 SrCl2 for up to 24 h at the initial pH 5.5. Sorption equilibrium at 4°C and 20°C was observed within 1 hour and did not change within the next 24 hours. Sorption process can be described well by Freundlich adsorption isotherm in both linearised and non-linearised form, not by Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Inactivation of lichen biomass by formaldehyde or temperature pretreatment did not cause loss of biosorption activity. 85Sr biosorption was strongly pH dependent increased from negligible values at pH 2 up to nearly 100% uptake at pH 5.5. Bivalent cations Me2+ act as competitors for 85Sr biosorption with the competition effect increasing in the order Co < Mg < Ca < Cd < Ni < Ba < Zn < Cu for Me2+ concentration 0.01 mol.l 1. A number of displacing agents have been tested for their ability to release extracellular bound 85Sr2+ ions from Hypogymnia physodes. Displacing efficiency increases in the order: water <<< EDTA (acid) < NaHCO3 < Na2EDTA < oxalic acid < BaCl2 < MgCl2 < CaCl2 < SrCl2. Efficiency of strontium biosorption by different lichen taxa will reveal their role in fixation of radiostrontium contamination in biosphere.

Opis:
The Pb(II)-resistant bacterium was isolated from heavy metal-contained soils and used as a biosorbent to remove Pb(II). The strain was identified as Enterobacter sp. based on the 16S rRNA sequence analysis. The effect of biosorption properties (pH value, Pb(II) concentration, bacterial concentration and temperature) on Pb(II) was investigated by batch experiments. Results of FTIR and XPS showed that the biosorption process mainly involved some oxygen-containing groups (-OH and -COOH groups). The experimental results and equilibrium data were fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model, respectively. The experimental biosorption isotherms fitted the Langmuir model, and the maximum biosorption capacity was 40.75 mg/g at 298 K. The calculated ΔGо and ΔHо were –4.06 and 14.91(kJ/mol), respectively, which indicated that biosorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. Results show that Enterobacter sp. will be an efficient biosorbent for Pb(II) removal.

Opis:
Biosorption is an attractive technology which is used for the sorption of substances by a biomaterial. In this present work the heavy metal chromium was subjected to biosorption because of their non-degradability nature and causes water and land pollution. Cherry leaves were used as a biomaterial for the biosorption. Kinetic studies were performed for the biosorption experiment. From the experiment it was found that the reaction follows pseudo first order reaction because of the larger value of regression coefficient R2 and lower value of standard errors (χ2) for pseudo first order reaction than second order reaction.

Opis:
The extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) produced from Rhizobium radiobacter F2, designated as EPSF2 , was investigated as a biosorbent for the removal of Pb(II) and Zn(II) from aqueous solution. The optimum biosorption pH values were 5.0 for Pb(II) and 6.0 for Zn(II). Kinetics study revealed that the biosorption followed pseudo-first-order model well, and the equilibrium data fit the Langmuir model better. The adsorbed metal ions could be effectively desorbed by HCl. Desrobed EPSF2 regained 80% of the initial biosorption capacity after five cycles of biosorption-desorption-elution. These results demonstrated that EPSF2 could be a promising alternative for Pb(II) and Zn(II) removal from aqueous solution.

Opis:
The removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions using walnut shells was investigated. The effects of pH, contact time, initial metal concentration, adsorbent concentration, and co-ions were studied in synthetic solutions. Metal uptake was found to be dependent on the initial pH of the solution; the removal rate increased upon increasing pH, showing the highest affinity at pH 5–7. The amount of metal removed improved with increasing initial concentration. Increasing adsorbent dosage enhanced removal efficiency, but reduced the amount absorbed per unit mass of walnut shells. The presence of co-ions suppressed the uptake of heavy metals, divalent ions having a more negative effect than monovalentions. The adsorption of Zn, Cd and Ni onto walnut shells was found to fit Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The results obtained in the tests with mining waste leachate showed the potential use of walnut shells for the removal of heavy metals.
