historical stone resources - Opis:
- Transgressive Eocene conglomerates, calcareous sandstones, and limestones of the Tatra Mountains (southern Poland), commonly referred to as the Nummulitic Eocene, currently protected and not extracted, were extensively quarried between 1927 and 1932, and widely used as pavement material in Polish cities, particularly in Poznań. The inventory of 41 historical pavements in the city of Poznań was compiled, and the history of the quarry was studied from the archives. Urban roads paved with the Nummulitic Eocene constitute an important reminder of the Polish General Exhibition held in Poznań in 1929, but are heavily degraded and slowly disappear from the urban landscape, being replaced by other natural stones and artificial materials. This substitution leads to inevitable changes in the character of the inner city. The preservation of these stone materials and unique rocks, abundant in fossils, is important for the conservation of geological heritage in the urban space of Poznań.
