Opis:
A new concept of job satisfaction demands an independent measure of two components of job satisfaction (its emotional and cognitive aspects). A classification of techniques for assessing the cognitive aspect of job satisfaction is made and their usefulness for study of different topics is presented. The Satisfaction With Job Scale allows to measure the cognitive aspect of overall job satisfaction. The paper indicates the sources of construction of The Satisfaction With Job Scale. It comprises the technique description, its psychometric properties and validity scores in a heterogeneous group, as well as in four categories of job. The internal reliability of the scale is high – in the heterogeneous group Cronbach’s Alpha is 0,864 (in four groups: 0,814–0,888). The scale has a one-dimensional structure: Factor analysis (principal components) yields one component with eigenvalue exceeding unity which accounted 65,5% of the total variance in the whole group (in four groups: 58,5%–69,8%). The scale shows high convergent validity with other measure of cognitive aspect of job satisfaction and discriminant validity in relation to measures of emotional aspects of job satisfaction and to cognitive aspect of overall life satisfaction. The data show that The Satisfaction with Job Scale is a valuable instrument for measure of overall job satisfaction.

Objectives: Days off, on call, night duty, working hours and job stress can affect physicians’ mental health, and support from supervisors and co-workers may have a buffering effect. This study elucidates whether job strain and job factors affect physicians’ mental health, and whether support from supervisors and co-workers has a protective effect on their mental health. Material and Methods: The subjects included 494 physicians. The Brief Job Stress Questionnaire (BJSQ) was used to evaluate job demand, job control and support. High job strain was defined as a combination of high job demand and low job control. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. The Maslach Burnout Inventory- General Survey was used to evaluate burnout. Possible confounder adjusted logistic regression analyses were performed to obtain odds ratios for depressive symptoms and burnout. Results: As per the analysis, high job strain had significantly higher odds ratios, and support from co-workers had significant protective odds ratios for depressive symptoms. High job strain and having only 2–4 days off per month (compared to > 8 days off per month) had significantly higher odds ratios, and support from co-workers had significant protective odds ratios for burnout. Conclusions: High job strain was related to depressive symptoms and burnout, and support from co-workers had a buffering effect on depressive symptoms and burnout. An inadequate number of days off was related to burnout. Assessment of job strain may be a good tool to measure physicians’ mental health, and a sufficient number of days off may be needed to prevent burnout.

Opis:
Purpose – The aim of this chapter is to shed some light on the antecedents of organizational commitment, the mediating role of job engagement and job satisfaction as determinants of organizational commitment within the public sector environment, and the effects that national cultural values may have on these relationships. Approach – This paper presents a review of the works that, from both theoretical and empirical points of view, explore the affecting factors of public employees’ organizational commitment in an international setting. Findings – A comprehensive model has been developed, detailing the expectations on the influence that these factors might have on public employees’ level of commitment, either as mediators or moderators. Research limitations/implications – The main limitation is the paper’s theoretical nature; the subsequent implication is a future empirical research that may prove or disprove these theoretical findings. In addition, there are some other possible mediating factors and antecedents which may be of interest for future researchers. Originality/value – This comprehensive review of the extant literature may provide academics and public managers with a deeper comprehension of how organizational commitment might be achieved, and why some practices may or may not be transferrable from one country to another.Paper type – Literature review

Opis:
Objectives: This study aims at exploring associations of general self-efficacy (GSE), workplace violence and doctors' work-related attitudes. Material and Methods: In this study a cross-sectional survey design was applied. Questionnaires were administrated to 758 doctors working in 9 hospitals of Zhengzhou, Henan province, China, between June and October 2010. General information on age, gender, and years of working was collected, and the doctors' experience and witnessing workplace violence, job satisfaction, job initiative, occupational stress as well as GSE were measured. General linear regression analysis was performed in association analyses. Results: Both experiencing and witnessing workplace violence were significantly positively correlated with the level of occupational stress but significantly negatively correlated with job satisfaction, job initiative, and GSE. General self-efficacy significantly modified relationships between both experiencing and witnessing workplace violence with occupational stress (β = 0.49 for experiencing violence; β = 0.43 for witnessing violence; p < 0.001) and with job satisfaction (β = -0.35 and -0.34, respectively; p < 0.05). However, it did not modify the relationships between both experiencing and witnessing workplace violence with job initiative (p > 0.05). The levels of occupational stress declined significantly with the increase of GSE, while job satisfaction increased significantly along with its increase. The effects of GSE on occupational stress and job satisfaction weakened as the frequency of violence increased. Conclusions: The findings suggest that GSE can modify effects of workplace violence on health care workers' stress and job satisfaction. Enhancing GSE in combination with stress reduction may lead to facilitating health care workers' recovery from workplace violence, and thereby improving their work-related attitudes.

The aim of the present study was to specify the nature of the relationships between work and marital satisfaction in the women. In addition it aimed at revealing as to whether demographic variables, such as age, position, length of service, marriage duration, and the number of children have an impact upon the work and marital satisfaction in working women. The present study included 120 married, working women, and analyses the relationship between job satisfaction and marital satisfaction, taking into consideration emotional and cognitive factors. The participants were mostly office workers, of whom 20 (8%) occupied management positions. The Descriptions Inventory, Job Affect Scale, Questionnaire of Well-matched Marriage, and a scale of work-job interactions were administered. Significant positive correlations across almost all variables of job and marital satisfaction were observed. This means that the increase of marital satisfaction corresponds with the increase in job satisfaction, although the work/family conflict resulted in experiencing negative emotions at work. Moreover, the level of job satisfaction was higher than the level of family satisfaction. It was also found that the age and time spent at work proved to have a negative impact upon job satisfaction. Work-family facilitation proved to be crucial since its exclusion made the interface between all factors of family satisfaction and work insignificant. At the same time, the managerial women suffered from work/family conflict to a greater degree than did office workers. The study revealed also that the needs of older workers should be taken into account to maintain their work/life balance.

The aim of the research was to analyse the relationship between job characteristics and job satisfaction. The base for the research was the Job Characteristics Model by Hackman and Oldham (1980) as well as numerous verification studies which pointed to the need to consider three groups of work characteristics: motivational, social, and contextual ones. The study sample comprised 375 persons, aged from 19 to 64, rep resenting different industries. The obtained results have confirmed that the highest relationship with employees’ satisfaction is displayed by the so-called “social characteristics”. At the same time, the percentage of job satisfaction variance explained by the features of work has turned out to be negligible, which indicates the need to explore different factors affecting job satisfaction, and to take into account some more advanced models and a larger set of variables.

Opis:
The decreasing supply of qualified people ready to take up employment, observed for several years on the labour market, results in the strengthening of the employee's position. The consequences of this process affect not only the companies but also scientific institutions. The employee's market, which is shaped as a result of the following changes, forces employers to focus increasingly on activities aimed at attracting and retaining individuals who constitute their human capital. The aim of our article is to diagnose satisfaction levels of various job facets and differences in attachment to the workplace in groups of scientists with varied job expectation profiles. On this basis, it will be possible to indicate the job facets that scientific institutions should take into consideration in order to provide researchers with a high level of job satisfaction. To broaden knowledge about the subject, we used data collected by the National Information Processing Institute in 2017 in a nationwide representative sample of 840 scientists who were at various stages of their academic career, represented all areas of science and worked in all types of scientific units in Poland. By performing factor analysis and a clustering procedure on variables describing researchers' job expectations we were able to categorize the respondents into three groups: 1) demanding, 2) aspiring and 3) unengaged. The demanding employees have high expectations in all job facets that we examined, i.e.: economic and organizational matters, developmental and social opportunities as well as employment flexibility. The aspiring scientists above all appreciate developmental and social opportunities more than other groups. On the contrary, the unengaged employees value developmental and social opportunities the least while other job facets are moderately significant for them. The survey of satisfaction of particular groups of scientists with their current employer indicates the need to focus the scientific institutions employing them on different aspects of work. In the case of demanding employees, it is important to take care of their economic wellbeing. On the other hand, in order to increase satisfaction from work of scientists from the aspiring group, it will be important to provide them with a higher level of satisfaction from the development and social sphere. The greatest challenge may be the satisfaction of unengaged employees who declare a relatively low general level of satisfaction with the workplace, and at the same time do not have well-established expectations towards the institutions employing them.
Celem artykułu jest diagnoza poziomu zadowolenia z rożnych aspektów pracy i przywiązania do miejsca zatrudnienia w grupach naukowców o odmiennych profilach oczekiwań wobec pracy.

ObjectivesThe authors characterized the demographic, socioeconomic, and psychosocial work factors associated with performance of unskilled manual work, and then identified the modifiable psychosocial work factors that affected the psychological well-being of these workers.Material and MethodsThis study analyzed data from the fifth Korean Working Condition Survey conducted in 2017. The study subjects were 37 081 Korean employees. The occupational classes investigated were: managers, professionals, and clerks; service and sales workers; and skilled or unskilled manual workers.ResultsUnskilled manual workers were more likely to be elderly and less educated, to have low income, to work fewer hours weekly, to have a shorter work duration, to perform temporary or daily jobs, and to report poor subjective health and well-being. Unskilled manual workers were also more likely to experience psychosocial hazards, such adverse social behaviors, a lack of job satisfaction, a lack of support from managers, and a poor social climate. However, with statistical adjustment for demographic, socioeconomic, and psychosocial work factors, unskilled manual work was no longer associated with poor psychological well-being, but psychosocial work factors were associated with poor psychological well-being.ConclusionsThe poor psychological well-being of unskilled manual workers cannot be explained by the intrinsic nature of this type of work. Instead, the poor psychological well-being of these workers is associated with unfavorable psychosocial work factors, such as a poor employment status, a lack of job satisfaction, a lack of support from managers, and a bad social climate. These results thus suggest that the modification of psychosocial work factors may improve the psychological well-being of unskilled manual workers.

Opis:
Noise exposure is one of the most important physical agents in the workplace which can induce job stress in several ways. The aim of this study was to model the interactions between independent and mediating variables and job stress using structural equation modeling. In this study, Weinstein’s noise sensitivity scale, noise annoyance questionnaire, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) job stress questionnaire and job satisfaction scale were used. To assess worker’s noise exposure, the 8-hours equivalent continuous A-weighted sound pressure level (LAeq;8 h), was measured based on ISO 9612 (2009). To achieve the aims of study, the structural equation model was run using R software 3.4.1 and Cytoscape software 3.6.0. Based on the results, while there was a direct positive correlation of noise exposure on total job stress, there were also indirect positive effects through job satisfaction and noise sensitivity as mediator variables. Using hearing protective devices negatively affected total job stress through a direct pathway and an indirect pathway when job satisfaction was a mediator variable. Regarding the total effect of noise exposure and using hearing protection devices on job stress subscales, it can be concluded that noise exposure and using hearing protection devices had greatest effect on colleagues support and demand, respectively. It can be concluded that noise exposure and lack of hearing protective devices have a significant positive effect on job stress among workers of a textile industry. In addition to the direct effect, this factor can induce job stress through noise sensitivity, job satisfaction and noise annoyance. Therefore, measures which can decrease any of the mentioned factors, also can alleviate job stress.
