Opis:
It is generally agreed that fine structure and microstructure are usually beyond the resolution of numerical models. Nevertheless, corresponding processes have a considerable influence on water dynamics and exchanges in the Baltic Sea. Measurements of fine structure were carried out with the scanning CTD probe. Microstructure measurements were performed by towing a system with fast-response velocity, conductivity, and temperature sensors. Bottom turbulence was investigated with the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter. Domains of high mixing and stining activity were revealed by means of high-resolution profiling on temperature and salinity transects. These domains were found near inhomogeneities of bottom relief such as the Słupsk Sill, the bottom elevation on eastern boundary of the Słupsk Furrow and in areas of ray concentration of quasi-inertial internal waves. Data on transects with manifestations of convection provide an evidence of the non-uniform distribution of turbulence in the upper layer. A bottom turbulence patch with duration of about 2 hours was registered over the slope of the Gotland Deep. The rate of turbulent energy dissipation is about ]105cm2/s3. In the area of Hamrarne and Słupsk Sill, horizontal scales of turbulent patches are between O(10m) and 0(100 m). All obtained data testify the high level of turbulent intermittency, so probability of detecting turbulent patches is high.

Opis:
Intrusive thoughts are characteristic of psychological disorders; attempts to cope can become maladaptive perpetuating the problem (e.g., thought suppression), while others can provide long-term symptoms relief (e.g., acceptance). Although emerging research begins to explore the neural correlates of these strategies in healthy population, it is important to explore these strategies in populations more likely to naturally attempt to use such strategies (clinical symptoms). The present study explored if the use of cognitive strategies to manage intrusive cognitions would be differentially reflected in psychophysiological measures (i.e., error-related negativity) of individuals characterized by obsessive-compulsive symptoms -a group commonly associated with suppression efforts- relative to a low OC control. 67 participants with high and low OC symptoms were randomly assigned to cognitive strategy (suppression or acceptance). Participants watched an emotion-eliciting video clip and used the assigned cognitive strategy while performing the Stroop task. EEG data was collected. Consistent with well-established and emerging literature, ERN was enhanced in individuals with high OC symptoms and a marginal effect of thought-control strategy was observed, such that ERN amplitude was reduced in the suppression condition and greater for the acceptance condition. Uniquely, the study expanded on emerging literature by exploring whether the relationship between ERN and cognitive strategies was moderated by OC level. Although results were not conclusive, these preliminary findings represent an important first step to study effects of suppression and acceptance on the ERN in a sample characterized by clinically-relevant symptoms and overall encourage further exploration.

Opis:
Research reveals a unique relationship between image representations and emotions. In this context, intrusive mental images could be especially unpleasant and distressing. On the other hand, because of their impact on emotions, images can serve as a support to self-regulation, including regulation of one’s own thoughts. In the article, a thought suppression strategy is proposed that uses images to fight harmful intrusions. This proposition is based on several research areas: studies on image representations properties, the “think/no-think” and the “white bear” thought suppression paradigms, and Lavie’s attention theory The strategy assumes the redirection of attention from unwanted content by using image representations in conditions of maximally freed-up cognitive control resources.
