    Współczesne wyzwania w kontekście rozwoju miast, wymuszają konieczność wdrożenia kompleksowych działań, ograniczających negatywne skutki procesów urbanizacji. Na znaczeniu zyskuje koncepcja projektowania i kształ-towania modeli miast zrównoważonych. Artykuł ukazuje problem koincydencji trzech pojęć: green city, eco-city i smart city. Bazując na literaturze przedmiotu, wskazano na znaczące podobieństwa i różnice pomiędzy tymi kon¬cepcjami. Dokonano analizy porównawczej, mającej na celu wyszczególnienie konkretnych kryteriów i cech, jakie powinny posiadać te idee, a także przeglądu wskaźników, branych pod uwagę w międzynarodowych rankingach. Zapoznano się również z praktycznymi założeniami koncepcji urbanistycznych. Takie aplikacyjne zestawienie pojęć, przyczyni się do jeszcze lepszego zrozumienia badanych idei i da możliwość najlepszego wyboru realizacji danej koncepcji, względem potrzeb danego miasta.
    Comprehensive ecological actions taken by urban authorities create an opportunity of counteracting the problems of excessi¬ve urbanization, among others, through the development and shaping of sustainable cities. The paper therefore explores the coincidence of the following terms: Green city, Eco – city and Smart city. The aim of the paper is to perform a comparative analysis of the discussed ideas and attempts to indicate the differences and similarities of the aspects of these terms as well as their interdependences. To a great extent, characteristics of such cities are very similar. Green city refers to sustainable cities, in particular in the planning and ecological context. Eco-city shares many features of a Green city, but it includes also numerous technological solutions, which are a main aspect of a Smart city. Very often Eco-city is also a purpose planed city. Smart city is focused on the use of technology in the urban environment, but exploits also some concepts of a Green city. Highly developed cities will certainly implement Sustainable Smart City, which is a compilation of Smart and Green city aspects. However, all of them are formed in accordance with the idea of a sustainable development, which the main aim is to improve the quality of life.

    Cities play a fundamental role in the economic development of the country. The vast majority of jobs, innovations and services are concentrated in the cities, thereby determining the country’s economy. Currently, the Smart City is the key concept of sustainable urban development throughout the world. It covers a broad spectrum of issues related to effective, sustainable city management. Today, Kraków faces important challenges in the field of socio-economic and functional development. For years, the city’s authorities have been undertaking activities aimed at making Kraków a smart and modern metropolis, based on scientific potential, while maintaining the unique historical and cultural heritage. The aim of the present work is to analyse the effectiveness of implementing the Smart City concept in Kraków. To achieve that goal, the most important resources, challenges and development aspirations of Kraków have been examined. The strategic objectives set out in the Kraków Development Strategy and the degree of development of selected elements and systems of the city were also analysed. An important element of the work is a questionnaire-based survey carried out among the residents of Kraków. The results of the analyses do not fully confirm the effectiveness of the measures implemented. A city that aspires to become a strong European metropolis should improve solutions to its current development problems, the most important of which include air quality and transport nuisance.

    The concept of a smart city stems from the conceptual assumptions of sustainable development. The possibility of its implementation depends on its proper elaboration. The aim of the article is to analyze the model development of implementation of the sustainable development strategy. In her article, the author describes the exemplary actions taken in the City of Wrocław within the smart city concept. The article uses secondary sources and author’s own observations.

    Sustained growth in the number of urban dwellers means that matters concerning the development of modern cities are not only a challenge for current residents, but a global test for the entire population. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and assess social awareness regarding sustainable development, with particular emphasis on matters concerning the circular economy. The study was conducted by means of the CAWI (Computer Assisted (Aided) Web Interviews) method on a sample of 389 respondents from Warsaw, the capital city of Poland. The results imply that although the society has a correct understanding of sustainable development and the circular economy, there is still a continuing need to support further education due to the necessity for wider and more intensive implementation of sustainable development in practice.

    Artykuł analizuje nowoczesne miasto DUBAJ w kontekście idei SMART CITY jako przykład wprowadzenia w praktyce modelowej idei zrównoważonego rozwoju miasta. Dubaj to współczesna aglomeracja znakomicie zarządzana i wykorzystująca wszystkie dostępne nowości technologiczne. Miasto stosunkowo nowe, wyrosłe na pustyni w skrajne niesprzyjających warunkach ale aspirujące do miana miasta przyszłości. Miejsce naprawdę wyjątkowe, postępowe, kosmopolityczne, otwarte....ale przede wszystkim wyprzedzające nasze czasy. To właśnie miasto przejęło pierwszeństwo spośród wszystkich aglomeracji światowych metropolii jako najbardziej innowacyjne i postępowe. Obecnie najmodniejsze słowo SMART CITY – znak rozpoznawczy zrównoważonego rozwoju tkanki miejskiej, to też słowo – klucz identyfikujący postęp we współczesnym świecie. Dobrym przykładem tej idei jest SMART CITY DUBAI.
    The article analyses the modern city of Dubai in the context of the assumptions of the idea of the SMART CITY, as an example of introducing a model idea of the sustainable development of a city in practice. Dubai is a modern agglomeration that is excellently managed and employs available technological novelties to the greatest possible extent. It is a relatively new city – that has been built in a desert, in greatly unfavourable conditions – one that aspires to be a city of the future. Dubai is a progressive, cosmopolitan, open city, but it is mainly ahead of our times through being the most innovative and advanced. The current term SMART CITY – the hallmark of the sustainable development of urban tissue – is a key element that identifies progress in the modern world. SMART CITY DUBAI appears to be an example that perfectly illustrates the idea of the intelligent city. A good example of this idea is SMART CITY DUBAI.

    The article deals with the priorities and dynamics of the Canada urban development and describes the sustainable cities evolution. The purpose of the work is to compare the main achievements in the implementation of sustainable cities in Canada and to outline the problems and prospects of the formation of smart cities. To date smart cities is also an innovative system, where technologies are used to improve the relationship between citizens and their governments and provide social innovation and improve quality of life. A sustainable and smart cities is a place where citizens work with local authorities to improve service delivery, develop community initiatives and create solutions to improve quality of life. In this context, it is important to analyze the current policy of sustainable urban development in Canada in order to identify problem points and formulate recommendations for further development.
    Artykuł dotyczy priorytetów i dynamiki kanadyjskiego rozwoju miast oraz opisuje ewolucję miast zrównoważonych. Celem pracy jest porównanie głównych osiągnięć w zakresie wdrażania miast zrównoważonych w Kanadzie oraz przedstawienie problemów i perspektyw tworzenia miast inteligentnych. Do tej pory inteligentne miasta to także innowacyjny system, w którym technologie są wykorzystywane do poprawy relacji między obywatelami a ich rządami oraz zapewnienia innowacji społecznych i poprawy jakości życia. Zrównoważone i inteligentne miasta to miejsce, w którym obywatele współpracują z władzami lokalnymi w celu poprawy świadczenia usług, rozwoju inicjatyw społecznych i tworzenia rozwiązań poprawiających jakość życia. W tym kontekście ważne jest przeanalizowanie obecnej polityki zrównoważonego rozwoju miast w Kanadzie aby zidentyfikować punkty problemowe i sformułować zalecenia dotyczące dalszego rozwoju.

W niniejszym artykule podejmuje się próbę oceny dotychczasowych osiągnięć w rozwoju inteligentnych miast oraz wskazuje się nowe wyzwania, którym miasta te będą musiały sprostać w najbliższej przyszłości. W rozważaniach i analizie wykorzystuje się studia literaturowe, sondaż diagnostyczny oraz studia przypadków. W podsumowaniu przedstawione zostało holistyczne podejście do analizy i oceny inteligentnych miast.
    The concept of smart cities has been intensively developed in literature and practice in recent years. This is a multi-faceted issue studied in differential scientific disciplines. This article attempts to assess the so far achievements in the development of smart cities and identifies new challenges that these cities will have to face in the nearest future. In the considerations and analysis, literature studies, a diagnostic survey and case studies are used. The summary presents a holistic approach to the analysis and assessment of smart cities.

    Purpose: This paper raises theoretical issues related to the functioning of cities that are determined as smart in order to find a better operational definition for further research. Design/methodology/approach: In search of the essence of the term, the paper refers to variety of definitions of smart city, and also to the theoretical models in operation enabling the measurement and comparison of indicators among urban areas in the different world locations. The analysis was performed on three rankings: Cities in Motion Index, Mercer Quality of Living, Arcadis The Sustainable Index. Findings: The conclusions indicate that the Smart City concept is connected with sustainable development more than to the quality of life. The city rankings concerning the highest life quality is completely different from the hierarchy of smart cities. Originality/value: The paper extends the definition of smart city and it may be valuable for researchers who develop the concept of smart city in their research.

    Tematem wystawy Expo 2015 zorganizowanej w Mediolanie było „Wyżywienie planety, energia dla życia”. Organizatorzy zaproponowali zerwanie z dotychczasową formułą wystawy. Położono nacisk na ekologię, która znalazła przełożenie w architekturze pawilonów wystawowych. Teren Expo to pełnoprawne miasteczko wykorzystujące inteligentne rozwiązania dla zintegrowanego zarządzania energią. Pawilony wystawowe wyposażono w rozwiązania wykorzystujące odnawialne źródła energii, a do ich budowy użyto materiałów przyjaznych dla środowiska. W niniejszym artykule podjęto tematykę inteligentnego zarządzania energią w kontekście wystawy Expo 2015. Omówiono kluczowe zagadnienia związane z oszczędzaniem i wytwarzaniem energii oraz jej zintegrowanym gospodarowaniem. Przedstawiono rozwiązania wykorzystujące odnawialne źródła energii oraz proekologiczne rozwiązania zastosowane w wybranych pawilonach wybudowanych na potrzeby wystawy.
    The theme of Expo 2015 in Milan was „Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”. The event organizers proposed a break with the previous form of the exhibition. The emphasis was on ecology, which translated into the architecture of expo pavilions. The area of Expo was a proper town that uses smart solutions for integrated energy management. The pavilions were equipped with solutions using renewable energy sources and were built with the use of environment-friendly materials. The present article refers to the problem of smart energy management in the context of Expo 2015. It describes key issues related to energy producing and saving and its integrated management. Moreover, the paper presents solutions that use renewable energy sources as well as proecological solutions used in chosen pavilions built for the needs of the exposition.
