- Based on the Silicon Valley experience, a definition of innovation and its specific nature as related to construction engineering is presented. The roots of building innovation, significance of innovation in construction, and assessment of risk related to the introduction of innovation in construction are discussed. The virtually unlimited potential of IT tools is highlighted; the BIM is presented as an integrator of technical knowledge, project management, and multi-dimensional digital modelling of the design and construction process. The goal of sustainable development remains superior to all other than life-safety and functionality requirements. The quest for scientific and technical excellence in construction is a complex process requiring new ways of delivering the university curriculum. Examples of contemporary construction engineering innovations are presented, with the emphasis on the need for bold adaptations of innovative concepts. lt is hard to say which of the experiments will in the future be adopted as standards and which will be remembered as attempts at originality? Regardless, construction engineering has been innovative and is doomed to continue to be innovative.
