Opis:
An individual-based model of an infinite system of point particles in Rd is proposed and studied. In this model, each particle at random produces a finite number of new particles and disappears afterwards. The phase space for this model is the set Γ of all locally finite subsets of Rd. The system's states are probability measures on  Γ the Markov evolution of which is described in terms of their  correlation functions in a scale of Banach spaces. The existence and uniqueness of solutions of the corresponding evolution equation are proved.

Opis:
A continuum individual-based model of hopping and coalescing particles is introduced and studied. Its microscopic dynamics are described by a hierarchy of evolution equations obtained in the paper. Then the passage from the micro- to mesoscopic dynamics is performed by means of a Vlasov-type scaling. The existence and uniqueness of solutions of the corresponding kinetic equation are proved.

Opis:
The individual-based model is presented for describing the dynamics of metapopulations. The model of the local population describes the dynamics of the population with non-overlapping generations. The growth of the individuals is followed in every generation. The growth rate of individuals is affected by the level of resources. The individuals compete for these resources, which are therefore not evenly distributed among the individuals. The persistence of a local population in which the individuals could not disperse was compared to the persistence of the metapopulation. Metapopulation models differed in the conditions under which individuals disperse. In some versions of the model the individuals that dispersed were the weaker individuals in the local population - they dispersed because they could not acquire any resources in the original local habitat, or because they could not acquire enough resources to reproduce. In another version, the individuals that dispersed were the stronger individuals. They migrated immediately before the extinction of the local population. In the last version of the model, the dispersing individuals were selected at random. The model showed that the reason for which the individuals dispersed affected the persistence of the metapopulation. In contrast to classic models, one cannot assume that dispersion could be adequately described in terms of the diffusion equation. The effect of the reproduction rate and the variability of the individuals in the population on the persistence of different version of the metapopulation model was also analyzed.

Opis:
Existing coupled biophysical models for Baltic larval cod drift, growth and survival use idealised constructed mean prey fields of nauplius distributions. These simulations revealed the best feeding conditions for Baltic cod larvae longer than 6 mm. For shorter, first feeding larvae (between 4.5 and 6 mm) pronounced differences in growth and survival were observed, which depend on food availability and to a lesser degree on ambient temperature. We performed runs with an Individual-based Model (IBM) for Baltic cod larvae in order to demonstrate how natural variability in prey abundance influences the survival success of first feeding larvae. In the Baltic, this larval stage lives mainly between 20 and 40 m depth and feeds exclusively on the nauplii of different calanoid copepods (Acartia spp., Pseudocalanus acuspes, Temora longicornis and Centropages hamatus). Prey data obtained from vertically stratified samples in the Bornholm Basin (Baltic Sea) in 2001 and 2002 indicate a strong variability at spatial and temporal scales. We calculated larval survival and growth in relation to natural variation of prey fields, i.e. species-specific nauplius abundance. The results of the model runs yielded larval survival rates from 60 to 100% if the mean size of nauplii species was taken and lower survival if prey consisted of early nauplius stages only.
