Opis:
The aluminium contaminated soil is currently being a concern due to the use of aluminium waste as a material for building roads and river dams in Jombang District, Jawa Timur Province, Indonesia. This application was debated because aluminium waste is categorized as hazardous waste. One widely known method for treating the metal contaminated soil is bioremediation. One potential indigenous bacterial species to remove aluminium, Vibrio alginolyticus was isolated from contaminated soil. A toxicity test to V. alginolyticus showed that this bacterium could grow in aluminium contaminated soil until 100 mg/L equal to 48 mg/kg concentration. The removal of aluminium from soil was conducted by using 50 and 100 mg/L concentration. The result showed that the addition of 2% v/v of V. alginolyticus can remove 5.48% aluminium from 100mg/L contaminated soil initial concentration after 12 days of test period. The addition of V. alginolyticus did not significantly influence the removal of aluminium from contaminated soil (p>0.05).

Opis:
The history of development and modern forms of functioning of education for indigenous minorities in Alaska reveal trends which appeared in other areas of the Arctic. The systematic activity of education, along with the influence of other state institutions (military, offices), and also the often destructive influence of religious organizations contributed to irreversible changes in the ethnic awareness of indigenous communities. They have resulted in permanent changes in the ethnic identity of peoples inhabiting the Arctic for thousands of years. Initially, education was used by churches in the process of Christianization. Then, education was used to indoctrinate state ideologies (in particular national ones). And although currently various ethnic and national groups in the areas of the High North have opportunities in the sphere of using their own language and protecting their identity, the criteria for social promotion through the education system have remained unchanged. As a consequence, even representatives of large ethnic groups are determined – in their education and life choices. Nowadays, the drama of indigenous minorities living in Alaska and other minorities in the polar regions continues, and we cannot expect it to end in a “constructive” manner. The dilemma of “preserving identity” in the conditions of a multi-ethnic society does not lose its focus. Individuals from indigenous communities usually have to choose between achieving educational and socio-professional success (as part of the dominant majority system) and the attachment to their traditional culture.

Bestrewn with relics of subjugation, the frameworks that hinge on social progress have failed to appraise the plight of the marginalized in the democratic discourse. This is the case in the Philippines, as in other fringed spaces caught in hegemonic world-building. In this setup, emancipation is anchored in salvific attempts – salvaging the marginalized from a messianic standpoint. This tends to produce a pejorative image of the marginalized as incapable of self-determination. I argue in a three-part discussion: (1) reexamine the locus of the margin in critical theorizing; (2) retrace the act of recognition vis-à-vis the emancipative struggle; (3) present that the lifeworld of the marginalized offers redemptive alternatives for emancipation. Further, I argue that this offers a foremost framework in critical theorizing at the margin since their situatedness affords a stance that has not formed a patina of the West but is primarily informed by their rich local periphery.

In many parts of northern Nigeria, indigenous knowledge about the significance of different tree species has been passed down from one generation to another without proper research and documentation. Therefore, this research work involves the preliminary ethnomedicinal and phytochemical evaluation of selected tree species among some local folks of northern Nigeria. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and oral interviews. Descriptive analysis was used to carry out the data analysis for all the tree species, while laboratory analysis was used to carry out the phytochemical screening of selected tree species in the study area. The result from the study shows that about twenty three (23) tree species belonging to diverse families were discovered. The phytochemical screening shows that only Piliostigma thonnigii obtained a positive result for all the parameters checked. This work also revealed the ethnomedicinal study of tree species in the study area.

Opis:
What is the meaning of the word ‘indigenous’? According to the Oxford English Dictionary, it means: ‘originating or occurring naturally in a particular place.’ Paradoxically, what was first taken away from the people we define by this umbrella term is a place of their own. It is important to realize that not only their birthright to housing and organizing their living space has been violated. The lack of place is also a contradiction of the word ‘indigenous’, and thereby a direct cause of most problems connected with the contemporary situation of indigenous peoples around the globe. That is why, this paper presents research on the topic of homelessness among indigenous peoples. For the purpose of discussing the problem in more detail, the focus is on two particular native groups: Indigenous peoples of America (First Nations, the Inuit, the Métis) and Aboriginal Australians. For the sake of clarity, First Nations, the Inuit, the Métis are referred to as ‘Indigenous’, and native Australians as ‘Aboriginal’, although these two words are in fact synonymous. The aim of this bipartite study is also to compare the situation of native groups and laws that govern public space from two entirely different parts of the world, and to check whether there are more similarities or differences regarding the issue of homelessness.

We propose a distinction between two onto-metaphysical orientations: one that reduces being to discursive practices, which we call ‘wording the world’; and another that manifests being as co-constitutive of a worlded world, where language is one amongst other inter-woven entities, which we call ‘worlding the world’. Speaking from Indigenous and racialized loci of enunciation, in this article we do not aim to dialectically propose an antithesis to the theses of modernity-coloniality or decoloniality, but to highlight the co-constitution of things in the world by making an ontology that is currently invisible, noticeably absent. We start with a brief outline of a common and arguably unavoidable pattern in scholarship in decolonial studies that tends to conflate knowing and being, inadvertently reproducing the modern-colonial grammar of wording the world that it, dialectically, aims to delink from. We then present a Maori philosophy of language that grounds a completely different relationships between language, knowledge and being to those that can be imagined and experienced within the grammar of modernity. In the final section we explore the implications of this philosophy for the call of decolonizing discourse studies, offering some (im)practical suggestions, given the current context of intelligibility and affective investments in academic settings.

The term “ancient Indian burial ground” holds bifurcated meaning for Indigenous and mainstream populations. What one group may respect as sacred ground where their ancestors rest, another sees the mystical –and frequently evil– site of forces beyond their knowledge influenced by an ethnic Other. This paper explores this dual labeling of North American Indigenous burial sites through media by looking at representations of Mi’gmaq burial gravesites. In director Jeff Barnaby’s 2013 Rhymes for Young Ghouls, main character Aila (Devery Jacobs) confronts two burial sites that turn the mainstream stereotype on its head: that of her mother which situates Indigenous burials in a contemporary context and that of a mass grave of children at her residential school which places malintent on settler colonial practices. The film highlights Indigenous ways of coping with these practices including violence, substance abuse, and art. Dissimilarly, Pet Sematary’s (1989) plot involves no Mi’gmaq representation but follows non-Indigenous Louis (Dale Midkiff) as he interacts with a stereotypical Indian burial ground imbued with evil, unknown magic that leads to the inevitable downfall of his entire family. Both films interestingly include zombies, and they portray Indigenous burial spaces similarly as shot from above and filled with fog. However, their conclusive statements placing the blame behind the horror are vastly different.

Towns located on the area of modern Georgia has mostly ancient or early medieval origins. From the same period are coming much of the terms describing the urban, the town and its inhabitants. Aim of this article is to introduce urbanity in the context of the semantics of a few basic concepts. Since semantics and knowledge of the genesis of the term reveals the cultural capacity of the places to define which these terms are used. In the final part of the text discussed terms are seen as carriers of historical and cultural memory.
