Opis:
The aim of the paper is to reflect on the specificity of the evolution of August Cieszkowski’s philosophical views. In the presented research perspective the very essence of this evolution lays in progressive distancing from the Hegelianism and in unorthodox turn towards religious sphere in a broad sense. This point of view underlines the fundamental meaning of God and Palingenesis, Cieszkowski’s work published in 1842 in which he directly formulates accusation towards Hegelian school for its abstractness and one-sided intellectualism. This work also sketches a postulate of creating new, synthetic form of reflection, that avoids limitations of both religious orthodoxy and philosophical speculation. The effort of creating such form delineates the specificity of Cieszkowski’s further output.

Opis:
The present study focuses on research about reincarnation in order to formulate some preliminary conclusions concerning various philosophical theories. The overview extends over a considerable period range, from ancient Greek and up to the patristic tradition. The relevant issues include the problem of evil, the question of human decomposition and death as well as reincarnation (metempsychosis) in the Platonic thought. The problem of evil is a problem of reason that emerges from the philosophical background of ancient Greek thought but also from the subsequent Christian patristic thought and transforms itself into diverse concepts (e.g. the significance of justice). According to the original thought of Socrates, evil is associated with ignorance and good with knowledge. This point of view is given a brief review in the philosophical thought of several important representatives of the patristic tradition (e.g., Origen and Gregory of Nyssa). On the other hand, the idea of immortality of the soul, which dates to the religious movement of the Orphic mysteries (seventh century BC) means that the persistence of the immortal soul at the moment of death needs the use of a new body. This essay will try to analyze the ancient character of the myth of reincarnation through the perspectives of philosophy and religion.

Opis:
The paper discusses Moses Mendelssohn’s work Phaedo and its Polish translation which was published in 1829 by Jakub Tugendhold. Although this book did not exert impact on Polish philosophy, Tugendhold, the translator, aimed to use Mendelssohn’s biography and his Phaedo as an instructive example for those representatives of Jewish community who wanted to free themselves from isolation and undergo social and economic, though not religious, assimilation into their Polish and Christian surrounding. Moreover, the author briefly compares Plato’s and Mendelssohn’s Phaedos.

Opis:
During the Renaissance an increased interest in the problem of the immortality of the soul was observed, and although this question became particularly important for the philosophers of the sixteenth century, it is worth noting that it was widely discussed already in the quattrocento. This article presents some results of the research on the revival of the analyses regarding human immortality; it discusses the impact of a humanists’ new vision of man and education on the dispute on immortality. Studia humanitatis, as an expression of Renaissance anthropocentrism, had the effect in the form of treaties on human dignity and nobility. Adding to this the concept of individualism in the humanistic pedagogy and new translations and editions of ancient works, including De Anima of Aristotle and the commentaries on this text, we have an explanation for the intensification of the discussions on the immortality of human soul.

Opis:
Gilson came across Báñez’s commentary on the Summa Theologiae in 1952, and since then he saw in Báñez the confirmation of his own understanding of the act of being against the background of deviant interpretations made by other Thomists, especially Cajetan. In this paper, Gilson’s claims about the metaphysics of Báñez, including the actus essendi, the immortality of the soul, the relation between philosophy and theology, etc., are discussed. Although Gilson rectifies Báñez’s interpretations of Thomas’ ways and the act of being of the accidents, Gilson’s ultimate assessment of Báñez is positive to such an extent that for the French medievalist the Dominican of Salamanca will remain “the most Thomistic of all the Thomists that I have had the privilege of knowing.”
