Opis:
The article presents the results of empirical research conducted in the selected opinion groups in the Military Academy of Land Forces in Wrocław (MALF) on the perception of the Academy’s identity components. The paper forms a part of the project entitled “Key Issues in Creating the Image of the Military Academy of Land Forces in Wrocław”. The military education in Poland was reorganised in 2005, as a result of which the military academies expanded their activity and began to admit civilian students. In an attempt to solve the research problem of how to create a system enabling the MALF to compete effectively in the market of educational services, a research hypothesis was formulated, highlighting the necessity of making changes to the existing structure of identity. The purpose of the article is to establish the current MALF’s identity components and to determine the possible changes in the system in the new market situation.

Transformation of the socio-cultural realm in Central and Eastern Europe countries associated with the processes of globalization, as well as European integration, led to revitalize the debate on the dynamics and directions of changes of identity. Besides the categories associated with, so-called, “postmodern identity”, often questioning the very existence of dentity as such, other issues have appeared which indicate multilevel identity, taking into account relationship between European, national and regional identity. On the margin of this debate another and new subplot emerged, which is related to migration from non-European cultures and the possibility of spreading and therefore shaping a new model of European identity.

The architectural place identity belongs to the historical and cultural heritage related to landscape architecture. It exerts a great impact on both the observers’ perception of the given space and their emotional attitude. The authors’ main goal was to create a tool that would enable objective assessment and measurement of the place identity phenomenon. Accordingly, the aim of this article is to present the result of accepting this approach – an architectural place identity indicator, as well as to discuss and promote conducting more research into this subject. It also provides the definition and clarification of the analyzed term. The measurement indicator of the chosen phenomenon has been presented against the background of the City of Wrocław and its urban public areas. The applied method allowed examining the analyzed issues within the given spatial range. The article comprises a complete theoretical description of the research and reveals all the options of its use in practice.

Opis:
In accordance with the classic – developmental – approach to identity originated by Marcia (1966), there are two basic identity formation processes: exploration and commitment. The first step on the way to mature identity is exploration. The aim of the present study was to analyze the dynamics of exploration in the period when it begins: in early adolescence. The participants in the longitudinal study (with three measurements at half-year intervals) were 327 adolescents aged 11 to 15 (M = 13.26, SD = 1.20) – elementary and middle school students. The sample was balanced in terms of gender (45% were girls). The instrument we used was the Early Identity Exploration Scale (EIES; Kłym & Cieciuch, 2015), enabling the measurement of identity exploration in 12 domains: physical appearance, free time, family of origin, work, boyfriend–girlfriend relationships, own opinion formation, perception of own place in the life cycle, self-reflection, future, future family, outlook on life, and attitude toward rules. The analysis was performed using a latent growth curve model. It turned out that in some domains (physical appearance, work, boyfriend–girlfriend relationships, and outlook on life) the level of exploration systematically increased, despite the relatively short time of the study; the domain of boyfriend–girlfriend relationships was the only one in which we found no interpersonal differentiation in the intensity of this increase. It also turned out that there was interpersonal differentiation in the level of exploration at the outset in all the domains analyzed.

Opis:
For centuries, identity has been an important existential issue, because it organizes human relation with the world. Identity is not only one man's being in a biological sense, but the principle of social and cultural order. The identity is the self-awareness, the result of the social actor's involvement in a variety of network connections which are forming a human being together with the biological dimension. Thus, the identity, on the one hand, is a kind of Erikson's tradition, namely the sense of being human, on the other hand interactionist tradition, modification of identity through a process of interaction. Contemporary world, the world of confronting cultures, raises the need for analysis of identity within many cultures, which has been shaped by continuous contact with different values, norms, patterns of behaviour. Upper Silesia has been our empirical reference point for the discussion on social (regional) identity. Identity of Upper Silesia is the result of a long and complicated history and present day. This identity is created by Polish, German, Czech and Jewish a cultural elements.

Another key idea is the proposal by Adriana Cavarero about the functions of relation and narration in building female identity. The author emphasizes the significance of the body and bodily experience in the creation of the feminine self.

According to EH Erikson (2004), identity formation is one of the most important tasks of adolescence. According to the latest research results, we know that identity is not a permanent, unchanging construct, but is shaped subject to various influences, especially cultural and socio-economic influences, and not only during adolescence, but also in subsequent stages of adulthood. The formation of identity is a process that produces a lot of challenges, limitations and conflicts, the experience of which can trigger different ways of dealing with them. These methods are called identity processing styles or identity processing orientations. The article presents the results of my research into understanding the identity styles of young people attending public upper secondary schools in Bydgoszcz (N=1.541). These styles were studied based on the socio-cognitive concept of Michael Berzonsky, according to which identity styles are understood as individual preferences when shaping personal identity, as well as the conflicts that arise during its shaping. M. Berzonsky (2005; 2011) uses the term identity style and identity orientation interchangeably, emphasising that he has in mind the organisation of identity processing strategy. His Identity Styles Model assumes differences in how young people deal with the task of shaping, maintaining and changing their identity, or how they avoid doing so. Within the model, three identity styles are distinguished: informative, normative and diffuse-avoidant, as well as the important factor known as commitment, which provides the individual with a sense of purpose and direction. In my research, these styles were measured based on the Polish adaptation of the ISI-5 Identity Style Inventory by A. Senejko and Z. Moose, the original version of which was developed by M. Berzonsky and his colleagues.

Opis:
The article is devoted to identifying key differences between Ukrainian and Russian political identities. It is ascertained that the basic parameters for Ukrainian political identity are individualism, rejection of the authoritarian principle, love of freedom, etc. The idea of freedom has been long embedded in the mentality of Ukrainian people. By contrast, as regards the Russian people (Muscovites) mentality, slavish obedience has long been considered a virtue. According to eyewitnesses, Muscovites considered deception to be a proof of great intelligence. They are not ashamed of lying. Ukrainian political identity representatives should not be expected to automatically submit to the authorities, as the reputation and legitimacy of the leader are important for them. Ukrainians can force an illegitimate official who is also acting illegally to relinquish the power. The bearers of Russia’s political identity are dominated by the need for a supreme leader who will make all important decisions on his own. This state of Russian political culture, where decision-making is delegated only to rulers, and the role of the population is to implement these decisions, is determined by long-standing practices of authoritarianism. Atomization, that is, the disunity of society, is one of the dominant features of Russia’s political identity nowadays. Due to the atomization of society and people being unable to trust each other, all sorts of significant protests or rallies in Russia are impossible.

The aim of the study was to examine identity statuses in various life domains and the relationship between identity and well-being. We adopted the three-dimensional model of identity (Crocetti et al., 2008), including: in-depth exploration, commitment, and reconsideration of commitment. Moreover, in accordance with domain-specific approach (Goossens, 2001), we sought to empirically derive identity statuses in various life domains. The participants included 835 emerging adults (Mage = 21.81, SD = 2.33). We examined eight domains previously identified in qualitative research: personality characteristics, past experiences, family, friends and acquaintances, worldview, hobbies and interests, aims and plans for the future, and occupation. To measure three identity processes, we used a modified version of the Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitments Scale (Crocetti et al., 2008) and to measure well-being we used the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (Keyes, 2013). Results indicate that, although the statuses identified in previous research were, to a large extent, replicated (except moratorium), people were classified in different statuses in different domains; thus, we conclude that talking about statuses should be limited to a given domain. Well-being was the highest in achievement statuses and the lowest in diffusion, but only in two examined domains: personality characteristics and past experience.

There is now a wealth of research that explores the relationship between identity and foreign language teaching. This paper, by analysing stories delivered by teachers of varied professional experience, is intended to show that teacher identity can be viewed not just in relation to the cognitive dimension of the self, but rather with respect to the professional discourses prevailing in a particular historical period. Conceiving identity in this way requires a focus on the professional aspects of teaching theories and practices, along with issues of individual identity development situated in socio-political contexts and identifications with communities of practice. The paper centers on the contextually embedded factors that are liable to change with the social, cultural and historical discourses of practice.

Language and Identity: The Case of MontenegroThe Montenegrin language was established as the official language of newly independent Montenegro in 2007. However, the idea of a separate Montenegrin language remained dormant until the mid-1990s, when a small group of Montenegrin pro-independence intellectuals, aiming to reconstruct all the trappings of a separate Montenegrin identity, started to emphasize the distinctiveness of the language of Montenegrins. How did it happen that once being a marginal idea, Montenegrin became the native language for almost 37 percent of the Montenegrin population in 2011? This article is an attempt to answer this question. It provides a brief overview of the language situation in Montenegro from the time of socialist Yugoslavia to the independence era, paying attention to the changes in the political elites’ attitudes towards the language issue. The standardization process of the Montenegrin language is described by focusing on the aspects, which are considered most significant from the perspective of identity. The paper also describes how the Montenegrin language is being narratized so that the language narrative is being produced as a part of the broader narrative about the Montenegrin identity. Finally, an analysis of the last two censuses’ data reveals changes in the population structure in Montenegro according to nationality and mother tongue between 2003 and 2011, i.e. the period when the issues of identity and language became extremely politicized. Język a tożsamość: przypadek CzarnogóryJęzyk czarnogórski został uznany za język urzędowy niepodległej Czarnogóry w 2007 roku. Temat odrębnego języka w Czarnogórze został nagłośniony dopiero w połowie lat 90. ubiegłego wieku przez niewielką grupę zorientowanych niepodległościowo intelektualistów, dążących do rekonstrukcji wszystkich aspektów odrębnej tożsamości czarnogórskiej. Artykuł przedstawia krótki zarys sytuacji językowej w Czarnogórze od czasów socjalistycznej Jugosławii do czasów niepodległości, z uwzględnieniem ewolucji w podejściu elit politycznych do kwestii języka czarnogórskiego. Wreszcie – analiza danych spisów ludności z lat 2003 i 2011 ukazuje przemiany, które zaszły w strukturze narodowościowej i językowej w Czarnogórze w omawianym okresie, kiedy kwestie tożsamości i języka uległy silnej polityzacji.

In the paper, the relation between a borderland region and the social identity of borderland inhabitants is considered. A question is posed whether the borderland has a stronger impact on the social identity of its inhabitants or the direction of the impact is opposite. The answer to this question is sought in the studies of borderland theoreticians and researchers, and in a reconstruction of how this relation is contemplated by them. The analyses lead to the conclusion that the borderland, its characteristics and properties undoubtedly have a stronger impact on the identity of its inhabitants than their identity and its specificity affect the borderland. In the conclusions, a thesis is formulated about the borderland effect, which is a sociological unobservable variable, whose impact, among others, is manifested in specific social identity profiling of its inhabitants.

The author approaches culture as a factor differentiating people and groups. In this context, some identity problems are indicated with the author’s assumption that nobody is a hostage of the inherited culture. The presented case of Piotr Lachman, a poet and a writer, shows the problem of being a Pole and a German simultaneously, the problem of constant existence at the borderlands of culture and of conducting inner identity dialogue. What is shown in reference to philosophers of dialogue and some other authorities is the value of the relation with the Other in the process of self-development. In the article, the author draws attention to the dogmas encoded in human minds as a threat to the development of identity and indicates tasks for intercultural education in the process of shaping supranational, transcultural identity. He also presents how crucial it is today in the shaping of multicultural societies to recognize and understand new, dynamic hybrid identities.

The paper describes qualitative research which studied six teachers from their professional beginnings to the present position of an experienced - expert - teacher. The research method used is life story, through which the teacher’s career is reconstructed. The key research question is: What strategies of work on identity did a teacher use to become an expert teacher? The most important motor of change and particularly of a teacher’s development was his/her decision and commitment to the development of his/her identity (Pittard, 2003). Snow and Anderson (1987) labelled this process as work on one’s identity. I will discuss only verbal and visual strategies, which the teacher uses to influence the environment at school in general (verbal distancing, gossip, and strategy of uniqueness). The paper concludes with a discussion of how necessary the verbal and visual strategies directed towards the school space are for the teacher’s professional identity. Had they no power, teachers could not influence decision-making processes.

The article deals with the problem of civilizational identity in the light of the experience of socio-cultural “borderland”. The author defines identity as a state of community or personality that has acquired the meaning of existence and, thus, integrity. Under the condition of identity differ in the image of identity and the identificational pivot-invariant. The image of identity is a spiritual reality, the basis of the “spiritual body” of civilization, reflecting its ideas about itself, its place in history. Identifying a core-invariant is the reality of the connection of the spiritual and the material “body” of civilization. In its spiritual aspect it is either the same as (fully or partially) with the image of civilization, or is in conflict (to varying degrees). The key characteristic of civilizations of the “borderline” type-the dominant of diversitydetermined the specificity of their identification sphere: relatively frequent (in comparison with the great “classical” civilizations of the East and the West) change of identity images while maintaining the same identification invariant – the process of interaction of diverse traditions. According to the author, the experience of civilizational “borderland” is especially valuable in modern conditions. The main conclusions that can be drawn from the study of this experience. First, it is possible to achieve the unity of the civilizational system in the conditions of the dominant diversity. Secondly, it is possible to preserve the identificational core-invariant with a relatively frequent (again, in comparison with the great “classical” civilizations of the East and the West) change in the images of the identity of civilizations of the “border” type.
