The article contains considerations on Marek Bieńczyk’s literary output and his book Kontener, published in 2018. All essays from the volume manifest their autobiographical and literary character. The main aim of the paper is to make a diagnosis connected with the particular and common (mis)understanding of the relations between death and life, mourning and vitality, melancholy and literature. This objective is accomplished through essay strategies. In texts that are part of Kontener, the suggestive and expressive subject makes continual new inquiries in order to find the essence of their (Bieńczyk’s) personal, and especially textual, identity.

The essay is concerned with the relation between sociological and literary aspects of autobiographical writing. Personal documents analysis appears as a diverse space where tools taken from literary and sociological theory can coexist and create new, useful categories of interpretation – life of single person and societies. Theories of narrative identities, experience as category of reading, writing and interpreting autobiographies (written by professional and nonprofessional authors), indispensable contexts become more visible thanks to possibilities arised by using mixed socio-literary methods. The most important aim of this text is to show how connections between two humanistic branches emphasize the versatility of autobiographical pact.

The article analyzes an extensive nonfiction book by Emilia Smechowski, a Polish-born author who relocated to Germany as a child. The purpose of the examination is to determine how the migrant and post-migrant experience influenced the author and her characters. The paper looks at the consequences of the tensions resulting from the migrant background as regards genre choices (reportage/self-reportage/autobiography), thematic interests (the text grew between cultures and languages), and identity definitions. The book is approached as an identity and emancipation project of the speaking subject. It is an account of coping with difficult post-migrant experiences on a micro- and macro-scale (a Polish intelligentsia family vs. German public discourse).

Der Beitrag unternimmt den Versuch, die Wissenslücken in Bezug auf die Wurzeln der Schriftstellerin Helga M. Novak zu füllen. Ihre autobiografischen Romane (Die Eisheiligen 1979, Vogel federlos 1982, Im Schwanenhals 2013) schrieb sie, der journalistischen Arbeitsweise gemäß, unter Berücksichtigung eigener Erinnerungen und Gespräche mit Verwandten der Adoptiveltern, von Recherchen auf den Standesämtern in Berlin und Dessau, doch das Gefühl, nirgendwo richtig verwurzelt und willkommen zu sein, schien sie immer zu begleiten. Dieser Beitrag präsentiert die Ergebnisse der nachgetragenen Spurensuche und will das in den Romanen Dargestellte mit Verifizierbarem (Dokumente aus dem Deutschen Literaturarchiv in Marbach, dem Staatsarchiv in Szczecin) vergleichen.
The paper’s aim is to fill in knowledge gaps concerning the roots of the writer Helga M. Novak. She wrote her autobiographic novels (Die Eisheiligen 1979, Vogel federlos 1982, Im Schwanenhals 2013) according to a journalist’s working method, taking into consideration her own memories, conversations with the relatives of her adoptive parents, research in registry offices in Berlin and Dessau. Yet the feeling of having no proper roots and not really being welcome anywhere always seemed to be present in her life. The paper provides the outcome of an additional search for information and presents the verifiable information (documents of the German Literary Archives in Marbach, of the National Archives in Szczecin) against the background of the information depicted in the novels.

This paper considers some of possible implications of emigrants’ visits back home. Alfred Schütz’s seminal paper “The Homecomer” provides a theoretical framework for analysis of autobiographical narrative interviews with young Polish people living in Germany. An attempt is made to explore why and how – typical for the emigration processes – a more critical and objective image of country of origin and a growing feeling of strangeness at home deepens emigrants’ capacity for reflection on their life and identity. Consequently, most of them painfully realise that they will never fully assimilate with the country of immigration and they no longer find themselves comfortable in their country of origin. This has crucial implications for their biography. The collected empirical data show that some of emigrants plan to immediately return to Poland in order to save their emotional relationship with those back home. Others find their homeland poorer and less prospective in comparison to Germany. This legitimate their residence abroad. And finally, the negative homecoming experience can perform a very important function in the narrators’ common-sense argumentation, i.e., this should reduce psychological and biographical costs of their emigration career

“Night has enshrouded my childhood” write Jorge Semprun. Civil War and exile have erased any trace of the childhood he spent in Madrid. What was left to the writer were only flashes of memory and an old picture of his mother. Jorge Semprun was eight years of age when his mother died of septicemia. Through writing, thirty years later, he was able to evoke her death, but how was he to tell about her absence? Between fiction and reality, five of Jorge Semprun’s novels recreate his childhood. His mother will first of all be an absence or an implicit presence behind his relating the city of his childhood. Having set the scene, ghostly characters whose identities are undefined but whose discourses become more and more outlined will appear. The mother will become a nostalgic absence. Her features, her character will be sketched out. Jorge Semprun will move forward hiding behind the multiple identities of his characters and the freedom which fiction provides him. It will be up to the last character, a fictive double of the writer, to find the last traces of a mother who has turned into a haunting presence.

The author addresses the position of narratives in the field of educational studies, the meaning of narratives, methodological conditions for research into narratives as well as the possibilities and limits of interpretation related to narrative research. The author argues for the importance of narratives for educational studies, because as a field of knowledge and academic discipline it relies on access to particular forms of individual experience. Educational studies need access to experience related to the subjectivities of those involved in educational processes – educators and pupils. Narratives as a departure point for learning about and understanding another person, her relations with others, intentions and course of her educational actions – as an educator or a pupil – is an important area for educational studies, which promises to open new perspectives of knowledge.

This study analyses the use of perspective in the autobiographical trilogy (In-House Weddings, Vita Nuova and Gaps) and the late “journalistic” texts by the Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal. The article examines Hrabal’s play with perspective on several levels: on the narrative level, Hrabal experiments with the narrative voice and focalization, and views himself through the eyes of his wife Elisˇka, who is also the narrator of the whole trilogy; this strategy allows him to gain distance from the “I-perspective” and to touch upon sensitive moments of his life (particularly auto-censorship, his relationship with the Communist authorities, and various fears). Furthermore, Elisˇka’s view clashes with the view of Hrabal as a character in the narrative world, which results in an original autobiographical polyphony; the article presents a detailed scrutiny of these perspectives with regard to time. Drawing from hermeneutics as a way of self-understanding shaped by texts and culture, the analysis of perspectivity will demonstrate that Hrabal also views himself through the eyes of books and cultural images; additionally, the article points to parallels with Hrabal’s other works, particularly Too Loud a Solitude. Finally, Hrabal’s playful use of perspective concerns the question of identity: the textual self that appears in the stream of images manifests itself in constant motion, thus unveiling the non-substantiality and openness of human identity. In this way, Hrabal’s writing about himself approximates the view of self in Eastern philosophies (esp. Buddhism and Taoism − Hrabal’s sources of inspiration) as well as contemporary cognitive approaches to the theory of autobiography (Paul John Eakin).

Zestawione w niniejszym artykule książki naukowe – Jana M. Piskorskiego Wygnańcy. Przesiedlenia i uchodźcy w dwudziestowiecznej Europie oraz Jana Musekampa Między Stettinem a Szczecinem. Metamorfozy miasta od 1945 do 2005 – to dwa sposoby przekazywania wiedzy historycznej. W publikacji Piskorskiego przedstawiono wiele narodów, tradycji i kultur w perspektywie migracji przetaczających się przez kontynent w XX wieku. Z kolei w książce Musekampa autor skupił się na powojennej historii Szczecina – miasta, które mierzy się z wielonarodową tradycją, a obecnie, w dobie europeizacji kultury, być może bardziej niż kiedykolwiek potrzebuje dookreślenia tożsamości.
Two books compared in this article are two different methods of transmitting historical knowledge. On the one hand, Polish historian Jan M. Piskorski presents people, traditions and cultures in perspective of European migrations in the twentieth century. On the other hand, Musekamp, historian from Germany, focuses on the postwar history of Szczecin, a city with multicultural an international tradition that needs to specify its identity. Both approaches can be considered as a part of reflection on culture of modern-day Europe.

If the presence of extracts from the life of the author (Paul Auster) allows us to postulate the “autobiographical” project of the memorial writing, others on the contrary confer it with a fictive project. The use of a stratagem of increased self-distancing and the multiple “mise en abyme” of identities leaves us puzzled as to the existence of an autobiographical scheme specific to Auster’s creation. Through the many forms of auctorial disguises, games of duplication, selfreflective mirroring, identity usurpation and handwritten possession, memorial writing integrates the different autobiographies of others. These are transformed into a functionalized or “real” autobiography of a subject who is a narrator, a character and an author.

This paper demonstrates the way an autobiographer shapes his/her identity in the creation of his/her narrative. The autobiographer’s struggle in his/her understanding of the self is sometimes evident in the work. This project focuses specifically on the work of Adi Nes, an Israeli photographer. His photographs demonstrate the ways in which he feels like an outsider in Israel, as both a member of the Sephardic community and a homosexual. His photographs are staged, and he uses figures of alterity by projecting himself into his images with the use of models, which may lead the viewer to question the referentiality, or truthfulness, of each image. While demonstrating his identity through personal experience and memories, his images are created in the context of a stratified society, demonstrating the power dynamics of the military and the different groups that reside within Israel. The paper draws on images from three series – “Boys” (2000), “Soldiers” (1994–2000) and “Prisoners” (2000).

Artykuł zawiera omówienie tematyki podjętej w rodzinnej autobiografii Bożeny Chrząstowskiej (matki) i Joanny Ciechanowskiej-Barnuś (córki) pt. Dwugłos z życia wzięty (Poznań 2015). Autorka analizuje wybrane elementy dyskursu tożsamościowego, umieszczając je w porządku historycznym i teoretycznym. Wskazuje główne kategorie: wspólnota rodzinna, etos wielkopolski, zakorzenienie, autokreacja. Zwraca uwagę na pokoleniowe przemiany polskiej kultury ziemiańsko-inteligenckiej, odbijające się także w dziejach rodzinnych. Omawia formę gatunkową analizowanej autobiografii, odnajdując w niej cechy sylwiczne. Zwraca uwagę na otwartą kompozycję, chronologię, asocjacyjność, polifonię narracji, znaczenie emocji.
The article contains a discussion of the subject taken in the family autobiography of Bożena Chrząstowska (mother) and Joanna Ciechanowska-Barnuś (daughter) entitled A double voice taken from life (Poznań 2015).The author analyzes selected elements of identity discourse, placing them in the historical and theoretical order. She indicates the main categories: family community, ethos of Greater Poland area, rooting, self-creation. She draws attention to the generational changes of the Polish gentry-intelligentsia culture, reflected also in the family history. She discusses the genre form of the analysed autobiography, finding in it the features of Silva Rerum. The author draws attention to the open composition, chronology, association, polyphony of narration, and the significance of emotions.

Teksty składające się na analizowany zbiór łączy przede wszystkim wyrazista kreacja podmiotu, poszukującego sposobów określenia własnej tożsamości – pozostającej w ciągłym ruchu, rozwoju i przemianie.
The article contains the consideration devoted to Agnieszka Kłos’ output and especially her book Gry w Birkenau, published in 2015. All textes from the volume manifest their autobiografical and subversive character. The main aim o those writings is making diagnosis to present polish common life and changing rules of community life. This aim is realised by essay strategies and political engagement. In textes placed in Gry w Birkenau suggestive and expressive female subject makes still new inquiries to find the essence of herself identity.

Tworzenie autonarracji, jako metoda wspomagania rozwoju nie tylko osób starszych, znajduje uzasadnienie w socjologii, psychologii oraz – najbliższej autorkom zbioru – pedagogice. Autorka sugeruje jednak, że wykorzystanie narzędzi literaturoznawczych i świadomość roli, jaką odgrywa autobiografia we współczesnej nauce o literaturze, może okazać się wartościowym uzupełnieniem propozycji płynących z nauk społecznych.
The text is an analysis of a set of scenarios of biographical workshops made by Kamila Lasocińska and Joanna K. Wawrzyniak called Autobiography as a creative challenge. The author draws attention to the interdisciplinary nature of the volume and asks question about place of literary in the publications that have a practical use in biographical education. Creation of self-narration as a method of supporting the development of not only the elderly, is justified in sociology, psychology and in pedagogy which is nearest to the authors’ discipline. The author suggests, however, that the use of literary’s tools and awareness of the role of autobiography in contemporary literary criticism, may be a valuable addition to the proposals that come from the social sciences.
