    The article explores new literary regional traits in autobiographical texts of Jan Szczepański, Józef Pilch and Jan Wantuła. The authors share common social background, all having been raised as Evangelical boys in Śląsk Cieszyński. While none of them has a formal literary background in strict sense, their texts show an interesting dynamics of narrative meanings. The reader is referred to the writers’ homeland, their own values, moral imperatives, and idiosyncratic understanding of Evangelical-pheasant ethos. The essay shows how this ethos is formed in narration to build the context for the interpretation of uneasy past experience.

    The article is devoted to the study of discursive identity based on autobiographical texts written by Uralmashzavod employees in the 1970s. In her methodology the author draws on Michael Foucault’s theory of discourse and Paul Ricoeur’s idea of the bilateral nature of narrative identity. In an autobiographical discourse, identity practices construct the normative subjective position of official Soviet discourse. The practices of the self are considered in the aspect of confession and frankness. It is concluded that the subjective position in the discourse is simultaneously supported by the practices of identity, and shaken by the practices of the self.

    The article is thematically related to the fundamental essay by the French hermeneutic philosopher, On Oneself as Another, which discussed with reference to Miłosz’s later writings (poetry and essays). The autobiographical quality of Miłosz’s expression is discussed through the concept of “otherness” as presented by Ricoeur. The discussion is conducted in the framework of triple relation of a subjective “I”: to one’s body, to the Other, and to one’s conscience. Miłosz, in his later works, responds to the ailings of the body with understanding, or even a sort of tenderness. Similar emotions are evoked by his contact with the Other, embodied by his ancestors and contemporaries. The responsibility for another person, however, and the communion with fellow people, are related, in his work, with the category of conscience. An attempt to narrate “oneself as another” allowed the Polish poet to reduce the seemingly irremovable rift between an artist and “the human family”; that rift was for Miłosz a troublesome legacy of modernism.

    The article presents the way of domesticating the space of the health resort and hospital in three works of Miron Białoszewski: The Heart Attack, Konstancin and The Letters to Eumenides. The illness – in 1974 first and then in theyear 1983, second heartattack – forces thewriterto stay consecutively in unfamiliar health resorts, and at the same time it opens a new stage in his life and work. Following the assumptions of geopoetics that the way of seeing space is associated with the activity and the perception of the entity, as well as taking into account the causative role of the places, I analyze the changes occurring in Białoszewski’s health resort texts. I further present the stages of constructing the “self” and demonstrate the importance of space of the health resort and hospital in each of the stages.

    The article is an attempt to reach the first statements and texts by Michał Głowiński, relating to Jewish identity in Poland, the condition of a child of the Holocaust, the trauma of a Holocaust survivor, and the situation of an intelectual. The author of the article tries to demonstrate continuity of all creative gestures, from the frist writings and statements, signed with pseudonyms, through Czarne sezony [The Black Seasons] and their continuations, to the autobiographical Kręgi obcości [Circles of strangeness]; the continuity is seen in the perspective of identity. The author is also interested, in the given subject scope, in Głowiński’s spatial obsessions (especially claustrophobia and phantasmagoria). The stake of literary “self-therapy” is in the most crucial things: truth of oneself, memory, self-identification.

    Der Band enthält die Abstracts ausschließlich in englischer Sprache.
    If the presence of extracts from the life of the author (Paul Auster) allows us to postulate the “autobiographical” project of the memorial writing, others on the contrary confer it with a fictive project. The use of a stratagem of increased self-distancing and the multiple “mise en abyme” of identities leaves us puzzled as to the existence of an autobiographical scheme specific to Auster’s creation. Through the many forms of auctorial disguises, games of duplication, selfreflective mirroring, identity usurpation and handwritten possession, memorial writing integrates the different autobiographies of others. These are transformed into a functionalized or “real” autobiography of a subject who is a narrator, a character and an author.

    The article reflects upon the works of Andrzej Bart and Zbigniew Kruszyński, concentrating on how urban space is correlated with the category of identity. The most useful here then seems geopoetic reading with its concepts of history’s influence upon geography (and different visions of Polish identity), biography and space identity, mythologizing urban space (Łódź in Bart, Radom and Wrocław in Kruszyński), and the relationship between autobiographical memory and space experience. Additionally, of special importance here is the interaction between movement and stability and between sedentariness and nomadism.

    Artykuł podejmuje refleksję nad tekstową reprezentacją Houston w twórczości Adama Zagajewskiego, co staje się pretekstem do zastanowienia nad specyfiką amerykańskich miast oraz ich wizerunkiem utrwalonym w kulturze europejskiej, jak również próbą skonfrontowania mitu z rzeczywistością. Kluczowymi pojęciami dla niniejszych badań literackich, wzbogaconych o perspektywę antropologiczną, są: zaproponowana przez Małgorzatę Czermińską kategoria miejsca autobiograficznego oraz kategorie obcości, wyobcowania i bezdomności rozważane w kontekście tożsamości. Celem artykułu jest również zbadanie, jak przestrzeń miejska oraz dynamiczny rozwój cywilizacyjny wpływają na kondycję jednostki, a w szczególności emigranta, przybysza zza oceanu.
    The article reflects on the text representation of Houston in the literary works of Adam Zagajewski, which is also a pretext to reflect on the specificity of American cities and their image embedded in European culture, as well as an attempt to confront the myth with reality. The key concepts for my literary researches augmented with the anthropological perspective are the category of autobiographical place proposed by Małgorzata Czermińska and the categories of strangeness, alienation, homelessness considered in the context of identity. The aim of my paper is also to show how the urban space and the dynamic development of civilization affect the condition of the individual, and in particular an emigrant, the newcomer from the ocean.

    Przedmiotem artykułu jest praca Agnieszki Nęckiej Emigracje intymne. O współczesnych polskich narracjach autobiograficznych. W tekście wskazano różne modele doświadczenia emigracyjnego scharakteryzowane w publikacji przez autorkę, która badając twórczość Zygmunta Haupta, Zbigniewa Kruszyńskiego, Manueli Gretkowskiej, Artura Leczyckiego, Mikołaja Łozińskiego, Tomasza Piątka, Michała Witkowskiego i Magdaleny Tulli, kategoryzuje emigrację jako realną, literacką oraz biograficzną. Zauważono również, że autobiograficzne mierzenie się autorów, wymienionych przez Agnieszkę Nęcką, z obcością i poczuciem odrzucenia oraz budowaniem własnej tożsamości na wygnaniu, pełni funkcję autoterapeutyczną. Publikację uznano za ważną pozycję w badaniach nad współczesną polską literaturą emigracyjną.
    The subject of the text is a publication by Agnes Nęcka Intimate emigrations. On Polish contemporary autobiographic narratives. Various models of emigration experience were indicated in the text. All were characterised in the publications by the author who has studied the works by Zygmunt Haupt, Zbigniew Kruszyński, Manuela Gretkowska, Artur Leczycki, Mikołaj Łoziński, Tomasz Piątek, Michał Witkowski and Magdalena Tulli and on this basis has categorised the emigration as real, literary and biographical. It has also been noticed that autobiographical attempts made by the authors, listed by Agnieszka Nęcka, characterized by strangeness, feeling of rejection and building a separate identity on the exile, perform auto therapeutic functions. The publication was recognized valid in the research on contemporary Polish emigration literature.

    Celem niniejszego artykułu jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie o związki między popkulturą a wychowaniem religijnym w katolickim internacie w świetle współczesnej prozy niemieckiej nacechowanej autobiograficznie. W centrum rozważań znajdują się uchwycone w niej zmiany w podejściu do edukacji odwołującej się do wartości chrześcijańskich i realizowanej obok lub też za pomocą przekazu popkulturowego. Główne pytanie dotyczy kwestii, w jaki sposób przebiega proces konstruowania tożsamości na styku religia–popkultura, jakie czynniki na niego oddziałują, a jakie ograniczają bądź też blokują.
    The objective of this article is to look at the relation between pop culture and religious instruction in Catholic boarding schools as reflected in contemporary German autobiographical prose. The focus is set on the delineation of the impact on an education approach based on Christian values yet influenced by – and sometimes taking advantage of – pop culture. The main question is about the way of identity construction on the edge between religion and pop culture, i.e. about the influencing, limiting or even blockading factors.

    This article reconstructs identity transformations that manifest themselves in the biographies of female activists with disabilities. The empirical material was collected through autobiographical narrative interviews. The author identifies key stages and turning points for these identity transformations. She also analyzes the role of significant others in the process of identity transformations and becoming an activist. The analysis of narratives of women with congenital disabilities demonstrates that the incorporation of disability as an element of individual self-definition is an important factor contributing to identity transformations. In the analyzed narratives, disability represents a biographical resource and, like identity, is processual in nature. Although it accompanies the individual from birth, it undergoes reinterpretations at different stages of life.
    W artykule autorka rekonstruuje przemiany tożsamości, jakie manifestują się w biografiach aktywistek z niepełnosprawnością. Materiał empiryczny zebrano, stosując metodę autobiograficznego wywiadu narracyjnego. Autorka identyfikuje kluczowe dla tożsamościowych transformacji etapy i punkty zwrotne. Analizie poddaje także rolę znaczących innych w procesie przekształceń tożsamości oraz procesie stawania się aktywistką. Poprzez analizę narracji kobiet z wrodzonymi niepełnosprawnościami wykazano, iż ważnym elementem przekształceń tożsamościowych jest włączenie niepełnosprawności jako części składowej jednostkowej autodefinicji. W analizowanych narracjach niepełnosprawność stanowi pewnego rodzaju zasób oraz, podobnie jak tożsamość, ma charakter procesualny. Chociaż niepełnosprawność towarzyszy jednostce od urodzenia, cecha ta podlega reinterpretacji na różnych etapach życia.
