Opis:
Amulticultural society, moving from a reaction to differentiation to conscious cognition, understanding, dialogue, negotiation as well as cooperation and collaboration, creates multiculturalism. Relationships between representatives of various social and cultural environments as well as national, ethnic or religious groups are treated as a manifestation of the disappearance of social distance and one of the best indicators of integration. London’s multicultural environment, in which there is a clear tendency to collectively integrate cultural identity, enables the creation of intercultural relationships with their own cultural identity. This phenomenon includes various strategies of the acculturation process and mutual adaptation of people from different countries, cultures, religions and speaking different languages. The multicultural identity of mixed relationships is determined, interalia, by the obligations of marriage resulting from the fulfilment of marital roles and compliance with the marital identity. Identity sets internal boundaries between spouses and regulates contacts with family and friends in the family, local, neighbourhood, and global environment.

The author, referring to his own research on the Polish-Lithuanian, Polish-Belarusian and Polish-Ukrainian borderland, formulates the thesis that after the collapse of the USSR individual nations began to develop their own national identity in opposition to other nations. The author poses the question of the civic loyalty with simultaneous loyalty to the culture of origin, national culture. He gives examples and attempts to answer in the context of the arising problems of identity in the emerging multicultural societies. Particular attention is paid to the problems of identity of Poles, as citizens of other countries created after the collapse of the Soviet Union, that is of Poles in Lithuania, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Buryatia.

In the article, the question is raised whether human knowledge, abilities, emotions and socialization are capable of shaping social structures according to the idea of multiculturalism (which faces a critical situation), introducing the humanistic quality to the principles of coherence and integration. With my own research results in the background (diagnostic polling and individual interviews), integration and identity are presented as strategies determined by aims, subjects (players) and profits (rewards). What has been indicated is the idea worth promoting in the field of pedagogy, in educational institutions and in whole societies, i.e., shaping the culture which re-builds the real power of group life. The postulate to shape such culture in multicultural communities is very hard to implement, but not impossible. The presented results of the studies conducted on a specific group of young Europeans – the participants of a short-term international voluntary workcamp – indicate and illustrate the development of cognitive functions, motivation and interactive activity of kindness- based character. The interpretative tracks and motifs for the obtained results are sought in K. Illeris’s holistic concept of learning and in other theories of various origin, not much known in the field of pedagogy: H. Simon’s concept of bounded rationality and R. Aumann’s theory of repeated games (otherwise called the theory of “conflict and cooperation” or “interactive decisions”). Applying two different approaches into the discussed issues – the theoretical and empirical, detailed and partially generalized approach – is cognitively interesting and useful in the practical dimension. This might help both to specify the stimuli which cause the evolution of human attitudes and strategies of acting and to design and organize education.

The subject of these reflections is a multicultural iconosphere, as a whole of im ages characteristic of a specific place or any culture, conditioning the formation of the identity of a 7–10-year-old child in three environments: family, media and school. According to the adopted concept of Erik Erikson, identity occurs in the context of two most important relations for the child: relation to oneself and to other people, including the culture and tradition. It indicates a special type of relationship that connects the child to itself – on the one hand, with child’s own psychophysical and moral condition (self-identity), on the other – to relationships with others. In these deliberations, the author tries to answer the question: how does multiculturality determine the identity of a child in the iconosphere? The first two environments – in which a child is immersed from birth – become extremely important spaces for the child, and learning takes place through unintentional activities – socialization. The child unreflectingly accepts values, principles; shares and inherits the culture in which it grows. This world and its image is subject to internalization, becoming a reality in which the child begins the conscious, responsible creation of the self, building own identity in the form of a set of self-conscious self-characteristics (self-definition). The third environment that creates the identity of the child – the pupil – is the school environment in which intentional actions are undertaken, that is planned education. In an intentional way (including curricula, textbooks containing content that respects multiculturalism), the child’s identity at the elementary level is formed. In grades 1–3 of the primary school, the pupil continues to build autonomy and self-awareness. In the school environment the child begins to understand and evaluate itself, to take a critical attitude to different situations, conditions, structures, groups, people and even cultures.

The social and cultural environment of kindergartens and schools has experienced considerable changes during the past few decades. This greatly affected teachers as well, since children with a wide range of economic, cultural and family backgrounds bring with them contrasting moral values to preschools or elementary schools. Children of migrant workers, refugees, immigrants lead to increased diversity which requires new competences from teachers. The notion of incorporating multiculturalism in today’s schools is beyond question. Therefore education policy should signiicantly prioritize the inclusion of cultural varieties: diferent religions, diverse traditions and customs.

The text concerns the most notable, next to Passage through the Red Sea, literary accomplishment of Zofia Romanowiczowa – the 1956 novel Baśka i Barbara. It was the first emigration book to appear on Polish bookselling market, and its two 1958 Polish editions launched a vivid discussion among literary critics, columnists, educationalists, and, the so called, regular readers. It received all due attention for being, first of all, an exquisite and innovative literary text on motherhood. Moreover, however, the book now provides a moving commentary on such current issues as upbringing and education of emigrant children, their identity, bilingualism, and multiculturalism.

W opracowanym zagadnieniu, które dotyczyło związków pomiędzy wielokulturowością a tożsamością, po zaprezentowaniu wymiarów, ideologii oraz praktycznej strony pluralizmu kulturowego, przedstawiono tożsamość (jednym z ważnych jej elementów jest religia), jako dużą wartość dla społeczeństwa żyjącego zwłaszcza w środowisku europejskim. Te zaś przemyślenia, poparte nabytymi już doświadczeniami, szczególnie z Francji, Belgii i Niemiec, doprowadziły do stwierdzenia, że pluralizm kulturowy jest pewną wartością, ale stawiane są mu określone wymagania, szczególnie dotyczące jego ideologii. Nie może nią być ani monizm dominujący, ani monizm hybrydowy. Nie do przyjęcia jest również mieszanie kultur. Ponadto pewne społeczności, jak np. muzułmanie, nie są w stanie się zintegrować ze społeczeństwem o wartościach chrześcijańskich. Ponadto tworzą grupy zamknięte nie poddające się żadnej kontroli ze strony władz porządkowych, co sprzyja różnego rodzaju przestępczości. Taki zaś stan, według zasady „pars pro toto”, powoduje, że obciąża się całą określoną społeczność i początkowe pozytywne nastawienia do niej zamienia się na izolację. Zatem – skoro nie sprawdziły się dotychczasowe rozwiązania, nie należy uporczywie trwać nadal przy nich, ale szukać nowych, które nie niszczą tożsamości społeczeństw zasiedziałych.
In the discussed issue that concerns the relations between multiculturalism and identity, after showing the dimensions, ideology and the practical side of cultural pluralism, identity is presented (with religion being one of its important elements) as a great value for a society, especially one living in the European environment. And these reflections, supported with the experiences that have been gained, especially from France, Belgium and Germany, lead to stating that cultural pluralism is a certain value, but some definite requirements are set to it, especially ones that are concerned with its ideology. This cannot be dominating monism or hybrid monism. Mixing cultures is also unacceptable. Moreover, some communities, as e.g. Muslims, are not able to integrate with the society that has Christian values. They form closed groups that are not subjected to any control by the forces of law, which favors various sorts of crime. And this state of things, according to the rule “pars pro toto”, is the cause why the whole specific community is held responsible, and the initially positive attitude towards it is changed into isolating it. Hence – since the solutions that have been applied until now do not work, they should not be kept to, but new ones should be looked for, ones that do not destroy the identity of the local communities.

The author presents activities of intercultural education that support the development of the identity of a modern man functioning in the conditions of multiculturalism. He analyzes three areas of intercultural education. The first, associated with the acceptance and giving meaning to inherited culture. The second one, focused on the development of individual identity, shaping the sense of freedom and responsibility for self-development in the process of learning about one’s culture and other cultures. Autor przedstawia działania edukacji międzykulturowej wspierające rozwój tożsamości współczesnego człowieka funkcjonującego w warunkach wielokulturowości. Analizuje trzy zakresy działalności edukacji międzykulturowej. Pierwszy, związany z akceptacją i nadawaniem znaczenia kulturze odziedziczonej. Drugi, ukierunkowany na rozwój tożsamości indywidualnej, kształtujący poczucie wolności i odpowiedzialności za rozwój własny w procesie poznawania kultury własnej i innych kultur. Trzeci, dotyczący kształtowania postaw wobec reprezentantów innych kultur, świadomości wartości uniwersalnych oraz nabywania umiejętności dialogicznych wobec licznych ofert globalnego świata.

Celem artykułu jest próba przedstawienia konceptualnych ram, w jakich przebiega obecnie dyskurs związany z wielokulturowością Gdańska i W rocławia, który nadaje znaczenia miejscom, zdarzeniom, osobom, stanom rzeczy, porządkując pamięć i kształtując tożsamość. W tym celu skoncentrujemy się na analizie sposobu prezentowania przez ekspertów oraz zwykłych aktorów-laików wzorców tożsamościowych tych dwóch miast z wielokulturowym kapitałem założycielskim. Przywołamy w tym celu niektóre założenia wielowymiarowej koncepcji nowoczesności, w tym teorii strukturacji Anthony’ego Giddensa, w której wyróżnia on wiedzę dyskursywną, czyli taką którą jej posiadacze potrafią ująć w słowa, i praktyczną, ważną w działaniu, ale trudną do werbalizacji. Podejście to wiąże się z przesunięciem akcentu w stronę działających i refleksyjnych jednostek, a także – w naszym przekonaniu – umożliwia pokazanie problemu wielokulturowości w kontekście dyskursywnych i praktycznych kodów konstytutywnych dla tożsamości obu miast. Podstawą empiryczną analizy są wywiady częściowo ustrukturyzowane z ekspertami przeprowadzone w Gdańsku i W rocławiu oraz wywiady kwestionariuszowe z mieszkańcami tych miast. Główna oś rozważań dotyczy zróżnicowania modeli refleksyjności zakorzenionych w praktykach społecznych, potencjale produkcji i reprodukcji miejskości w analizowanym zakresie wielokulturowości.
The aim of the article is to present a conceptual and interpretative framework for most current discourse on the role of multicultural intangible heritage in the process of meaning-making and shaping the identity of the cities of Gdansk and Wroclaw. The focus is on the analysis of various forms of presenting patterns of identity of cities with a multicultural past, exhibited by expert and lay informants from both cities. The conceptual framework uses some elements of a multidimensional concept of modernity, including Anthony Giddens’ theory of structuration, which emphasizes the role of types of knowledge used by various actors of social life and points to active and reflexive individuals. A key word is discursive knowledge – knowledge that can be verbalized and practical – more difficult to express verbally but decisive when it comes to taking action. The focus is on reflexive individuals in their social actions around discursive and practical codes constitutive for urban identity. Empirical data for the analysis was drawn from semi-structured interviews with expert informants and survey questionnaires with lay inhabitants of the two cities. The analysis is focused on a variety of models of reflexivity rooted in social practices, in the potential of production and reproduction of cityness in the context of multiculturalism.

Przedmiotem niniejszego tekstu jest refleksja nad minioną i współczesną kulturą baskijską, sytuacją polityczną i społeczną Baskonii w przeszłości i obecnie, a także próba zarysowania możliwych scenariuszy dotyczących jej przyszłości. Jednak punktem wyjścia do tych rozważań musi stać się kwestia podstawowa, choć niejednoznaczna, a mianowicie sama nazwa Kraju Basków i problem jego granic.
{e subject of the article is focused on the past and present political and cultural situation in the Basque Country, acting at the same time attempt to reflect on the future of the region. For this pur-pose, the author referrs to the problem of Basque-Spanish relations, which a difficult past still affects. Particular attention was also paid to the Basque language which is a key element of Basque identity, including linguistic repression and reviving the phenomenon of euskary. She also emphasizes the growing importance of immigrants in the Basque society.

W artykule przedstawiono współczesny kontekst wychowawczy Europy z jego wielorakimi wyzwaniami, zagrożeniami i szansami. Autor skupia się przede wszystkim na wyzwaniach globalizacyjnych, w tym na wzrastającym w Europie poziomie wielokulturowości i wieloreligijności. Jego zdaniem jest to nowa sytuacja, inna od tej z przeszłości, która stanowi duże wyzwanie dla instytucji wychowawczych prowadzonych przez salezjanów. Wychowanie współcześnie nie może być pielęgnowaniem przeszłości, lecz zmusza do odważnego poszukiwania aplikacji charyzmatu Jana Bosko w warunkach zgodnych z mentalnością współczesnych Europejczyków, a w szczególności młodzieży.
In this article author presents the contemporary educational context of Europe, with its multiple challenges, threats, and opportunities. It focuses mainly on many different challenges of globalization, marked especially by growing European context of multiculturalism and multireligiosity. The new educational situation, different from that of the past, constitutes a major challenge for educational institutions also for the Salesians and requires a new approach. The education of today’s youth cannot be limited only to mourn the past, but also to courageous search for a new identity of the charism of Don Bosco, adapted to the mentality of contemporary Europeans, especially young people.

Opis:
The Podlasie study is essential due to the multiculturalism in the area, which, on the one hand, determines the richness of the region, and on the other, leads to difficulties in identifying the population’s nationality. The CULTURAL-LINGUISTIC HERITAGE OF PODLASIE project has been carried out at the Department of Belarusian Studies at Warsaw University since January 2013. The main objective of the project is to investigate the Polish – East Slavic linguistic interference and the cultural-historical differences. Another dimension of the project is the analysis of behaviours in bilingual communities of the multicultural borderland, such as the necessity to select the appropriate language in various social situations. The comparison of research material from the 1980s and recordings obtained in 2013 enables tracing changes that have occurred in the local dialects, rituals and traditions of Podlasie over the last 30 years.
Badanie Podlasia jest ważne ze względu na wielokulturowość, która z jednej strony stanowi o bogactwie danego regionu, a z drugiej – często utrudnia identyfikację narodową mieszkańców. Projekt Kulturowo-językowe dziedzictwo Podlasia realizowany jest w Katedrze Białorutenistyki Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego od stycznia 2013 roku. Głównym celem projektu jest zbadanie polsko-wschodniosłowiańskiej interferencji językowej i różnic historyczno-kulturowych. Dodatkowym wymiarem jest analiza zachowania się społeczności bilingwalnej w warunkach wielokulturowości pogranicza, na przykład konieczności wyboru odpowiedniego języka w różnych sytuacjach społecznych. Porównanie materiałów z lat 80. XX wieku oraz nagrań uzyskanych w 2013 roku pozwala na prześledzenie zmian, które zaszły w gwarach oraz obrzędach i tradycjach podlaskich na przestrzeni ostatniego 30-lecia.
Даследаванне Падляшша важнае з увагі на шматкультурнасць, якая, з аднаго боку, сведчыць пра багацце дадзенага рэгіёна, а з другога – часта ўскладняе нацыянальную ідэнтычнасць жыхароў. Праект Культурна-моўная спадчына падляшша рэалізуецца Кафедрай беларусістыкі Варшаўскага ўніверсітэта cа студзеня 2013 года. Галоўнай яго мэтай з’яўляецца даследаванне польска-ўсходнеславянскай моўнай інтэрферэнцыі і гістарычна-культурнай дыферэнцыяцыі. Дадатковым вымярэннем з’яўляецца аналіз паводзін білінгвальнага грамадства ва ўмовах шматкультурнага памежжа, напрыклад, неабходнасці выбару мовы i розных сацыяльных сітуацыях. Параўнанне матэрыялаў з 80-х гадоў ХХ стагоддзя ды запісаў з 2013 года дазваляе назіраць змены, якія адбыліся ў падляшскіх гаворках, абрадах і традыцыях за апошнія 30 гадоў.

The article is a review of the book Deutschland und Polenbilder in der Literatur nach 1989 edited by Carsten Gansel and Monika Wolting. In the first part four main assumptions of the volume are described: 1. The presentation of historic transformations in literary texts, 2. The provocative potential of literary texts, 3. The construction of identity in narratives, 4. The construction of symbolic spaces in literary texts. According to these categories the papers of the volumes are examined. Their coherence with the main idea of the volume as well as their methodological foundation are the evaluating criteria of the review.
