Opis:
The article describes the most significant factors of the German identityconstructing process after the World War II comparing it to the same process in the European Union. It focuses above all on the official documents and acts concerning common identity and also asks a question if the process of embedding them in the European law legacy does constitute a tradition characteristic for European Union and forms its own part of its supranational identity. Finally it contains an attempt to answer the question about the future of both German and European identity.

This paper is intended to be an analytical study of African identity and culture in Mongo Beti’s Completed Mission. It aims to shed light on the specificity of this society, the place that the individual occupies there and the transformations that it suffered with the arrival of the colonizer. It focuses first of all on the characters of the novel and their attributions in order to know how the social group, to which these entities belong, is constituted, structured and hierarchized. It then reconstructs the cultural aspects of black man’s life as suggested by the text.

Along with the political, social and political changes in Bulgaria and Romania, new threads have appeared in the debate on identity since the early 1990s. From one side, it was the result of challenges and threats in the dimension of foreign policy and security of these two countries, and on the other side – the result of new opportunities that emerged in front of Bulgaria and Romania in the generally changed geopolitical situation. It seems that Romania remains more consistent and expressive in its choices. In turn, Bulgaria has undergone a greater evolution, and given the level from which it began after 1989, maybe even a revolution in the perception of its European identity.

Opis:
The beginning of the 21st century is the time of a new challenge for the Polish nation. Standing on the threshold of a new century, it has also stood on the ‘threshold’ of the united Europe. Culture is a binder thanks to which it is possible to discover and to maintain peoples’ identity and the bonds connecting individual members of the nation. The multitude of nations is a variety which makes Europe not a monolith in relation to culture; instead, it constitutes a mosaic of different cultures and philosophies of life. The Church does not try to identify with any of the culture patterns, but it seeks its place among the diversity of their forms. However, one can talk about the development of a Christian culture model resulting from the faith and the presence of the evangelical message in the whole of the Christians’ life. In the survey concerning Poland’s accession to the European Union, Polish people have expressed their hopes and fears connected with the process of integration. As many as 11% of the people surveyed expressed their anxiety related to the adverse effect upon culture and customs. The Church in its social instruction continuously emphasizes the necessity of maintaining one’s own cultural identity by particular ethnic, national and regional groups. The united Europe is to become not exactly a federation of countries, but rather the home of homes. In the everyday life of the new united Europe the system of norms, values and patterns of religious and cultural behaviour are going to be verified. Both the sceptics and the enthusiasts of the integration process are looking for a place and a role for the Polish Christians in the secularized European society.

Opis:
Water is a theme connected to human and social development, not only biologically but also in terms of cultural and identity processes; surprisingly, studies that discuss water from a sociocultural/sociological perspective are scarce. The foundational role of water in the construction of social reality should be highlighted: as a maetr of fact, thanks to it identity processes develop, and the realisation of the relationship between human beings and the environment, and between culture and nature, occurs. The relationship with water as a primordial substance tied to the roots of existence pertains to the physiological as well as the historical development of societies. Historically, societies see the presence of water in their territories as an indispensable element for establishing the foundations of civilisations, and a central criterion for seting the bases of development. With regards to the management of territorial resources, it should be noted that, although water is a primary resource, it is not available everywhere. Humans had to struggle to secure reliable water sources, using techniques derived from millenary knowledge systems, which enabled individuals and communities to live and survive in times of abundance and scarcity, tumultuousness and poor health. Past narratives and ethnographies related to traditional communities link symbols to history, productive forms, and material constraints due to the physical factors of the environment. Water is a foundational element of the cosmogonic and theogonic myths that governed the evolution of ancient genealogies and epistemologies. For its intrinsic virtues, water is considered a living and beneficial force: it is hard to find another substance that can at the same time wash away guilt, eliminate impurities, refresh and reinvigorate weary souls, and promise renewal and existential rebirth. Starting from these premises, the essay deals with the theme of water, a humble substance with complex implications, considering the foundations of culture, and analyzing the natural element from a sociological perspective with reference to myths of origins, naturalistic philosophical conceptions, and imaginary, up to and including aspects related to religiosity, to get to the roots of identity.

Roles, fears, ideas, beliefs all influence behaviour. Strategic culture is an alternative way of explaining strategic behaviour, is a part of specific culture influence behaviour. Strategic culture is an integrated system of symbols (e.g. argumentation, structures, languages, analogies, metaphors) which acts to establish pervasive and long lasting strategic preferences by formulating concepts of the role and efficacy of military force in interstate political affairs, and by clothing these conceptions with such an aura of factuality that the strategic preferences seem uniquely realistic and efficacious. political, cultural and cognitive characteristics of the state and its elites. Therefore the EU as a multicultural space has one too. It may be the case that the EU strategic culture is a ‘weak’ strategic culture, a culture that is in the process of formation. The EU is expected to have a very special strategic culture because of its nature of foreign policy. State formation implied that the army had an important role to play in forming the identity of each state. However, the EU had no military and the emphasis on foreign policy was put on soft elements of external relations. Each state and security institution has a strategic culture as a part of cultural development. Different states have different predominant strategic preferences that are rooted in the early or formative experiences of the state and are influenced to some degree, by the philosophical, political, cultural and cognitive characteristics of the state and its elites.

This geopoetical study opens before its reader the whole world of the history and art of the city which played an important role on the cultural map of Ukraine. Speaking about the identity of Odessa and its inhabitants nowadays, we have to say that there are a lot of representations of it. The struggle between the images of the imperiled province and the contemporary Ukrainian port center influences the cultural identification of the city. The review reveals all the ways in which the researcher tries to represent the original image of this metropolis in artistic works and visions.

The issue of identity among of the people of Japan is very complex. On the one hand, there is the prevalent and promoted myth of their homogeneous origin and the Japanese culture, while on the other – along with the development of social and cultural sciences – there is a growing awareness of the country’s ethno-cultural diversity. The Japanese are now increasingly facing the question of ethnic stereotypes and the issue of cultural competences of people living in the Japanese Archipelago. This article presents an analysis of identity-building among of the Japanese and two minority groups: ethnic Koreans (zainichi) and children born to mixed couples (hāfu).

The research results presented in this study show that youth in the final stage of adolescence judge the reality in a critical way. A significant number of the examined learners implement the model of identity shaped in the ‘down top’ direction. They reject media authorities and aim at creating their own concept of themselves. At the same time, a large percentage of the respondents respect media models associated with appearance and the consumerist lifestyle.

Opis:
The process of globalization leads to the search for its roots, the search for support in its native culture, the defense of what is characteristic and individual for the community. It does not indicate the end of cultural diversity and identity despite the standardization of behavior and homogenization of behavior standards, values system and so-called mass culture. Globalization leads to the standardization of consumer behaviors of the destandardized style of life. At the same time, it is noticeable that the attempts of unification of culture standards sometimes lead to the opposing reactions directed at the protection of national cultures and the defense of national identity as well. There are opinions that the promotion of the consumer culture and the disappearance of communication barriers will lead to the mutual dialogue and understanding between cultures and civilizations. Nowadays, we know it sometimes may cause conflicts between civilizations. Globalization has also aroused anxiety in societies and people will look for their own identity in particularistic references: religious, cultural and national.
