Opis:
Hydrodynamic cavitation is a phenomenon that can be used in the water treatment process. For this purpose, venturis or orifices varying in geometry are used. Studying this phenomenon under experimental conditions is challenging due to its high dynamics and difficulties in measuring and observing the phase transition of the liquid. For this reason, the CFD method was used to study the phenomenon of hydrodynamic cavitation occurring in water flow through the orifice and then analyze flow parameters for different boundary conditions. The research was performed for four different orifice geometries and two defined fluid pressure values at the inlet, based on a computational 2D model of the research object created in Ansys Fluent software. As a result of the numerical simulation, the distribution of fluid velocity and pressure and volume fraction of the gas phase were obtained. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the phenomenon of hydrodynamic cavitation under the considered flow conditions was conducted for the defined orifice geometries. The largest cavitation zone and thus the largest volume fraction of the gas phase was obtained for the orifice diameter of 2 mm with a sharp increase in diameter. However, the geometry with a linear change in diameter provided the largest volume fraction of the gas phase per power unit.

Opis:
The overall gas hold-up of a pilot plant scale internal loop airlift reactor was studied in presence of different alcohols in varied concentration. It has been observed that these simple alcohols can enhance overall gas hold-up of the airlift assembly possibly due to formation of protective thin layer over smaller gas bubbles thereby reducing chance of their coalescence. As the alcohols can be used as food source for the micro organisms present in the system, this green and environment friendly process have potential to replace usage of hazardous surfactants often used for enhancing overall hold-up in order to obtain desired mass transfer characteristics. An empirical relationship encompassing overall gas hold-up of the reactor as a function of superficial gas velocity and alcohol concentration is also developed.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of research regarding measurements of the values of pressure drops during horizontal flow of gas-liquid and gas-liquid-liquid mixture through 180o pipe bends. The conducted insightful analysis and assessment during multi-phase flow in pipe bends has enabled to develop a new method for determination of their values. This new method for determining pressure drops ensures higher precision of calculation in comparison to other methods presented in literature and can be applied for calculation of these parameters during multi-phase flows in pipe bends with various geometries.

Opis:
The aim of the present study was to investigate the sensitivity of a multiphase Eulerian CFD model with respect to relations defining drag forces between phases. The mean relative error as well as standard deviation of experimental and computed values of pressure gradient and average liquid holdup were used as validation criteria of the model. Comparative basis for simulations was our own data-base obtained in experiments carried out in a TBR operating at a co-current downward gas and liquid flow. Estimated errors showed that the classical equations of Attou et al. (1999) defining the friction factors Fjk approximate experimental values of hydrodynamic parameters with the best agreement. Taking this into account one can recommend to apply chosen equations in the momentum balances of TBR.

The paper presents issues connected with the use of Eulerian multiphase model for modelling a three-phase fixed-bed reactor (TBR). Param eters calculated on the basis of available in literature data were selected, and next the analysis of model sensitivity to the change of selected parameters was carried out. The influence of changes of relationships describing the interaction forces between phases and the change of radial porosity of packing on the results of numerical calculations was analyzed.

Opis:
The results of experimental research concerning the assessment of the permeability of porous materials with respect to gas flow are presented in this paper. The conducted research applied to, among others, chars (acquired from the UCG thermal process) with an anisotropic gap-porous structure and - for comparative purposes - model materials such as pumice and polyamide agglomerates. The research was conducted with the use of a special test stand that enables the measuring of gas permeability with respect to three flow orientations compared with symmetric cubic-shaped samples. The research results show the explicit impact of the flow direction on the permeability of chars, which results from their anisotropic internal structures. The suitability of calculation methods employed to calculate the hydrodynamics of the gas flow through porous materials was also evaluated.

Opis:
The hydrodynamic interaction effects between two vessels that are significantly different in size operating in close proximity can adversely affect the safety and handling of these vessels. Many ship handling simulator designers implement Potential Flow (PF) solvers to calculate real-time interaction effects. However, these PF solvers struggle to accurately predict the complicated flow regimes that can occur, for example as the flow passes a wet transom hull or one with a drift angle. When it comes to predicting the interaction effects on a tug during a ship assist, it is essential to consider the rapid changes of the tug’s drift angle, as the hull acts against the inflow creating a complicated flow regime. This paper investigates the ability of the commercial PF solver, Futureship®, to predict the accurate interaction effects acting on tugs operating at a drift angle during ship handling operations through a case study. This includes a comparison against Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and captive model tests to examine the suitability of the PF method for such duties. Although the PF solver can be tuned to solve streamline bodies, it needs further improvement to deal with hulls at drift angles.

Opis:
Hydrodynamic flow regulators are used for diversion and/or limiting excess discharge in wastewater and stormwater systems as a replacement for traditional flow throttling devices. They are highly efficient, reliable and free from common disadvantages of traditional devices. Recent research of the authors indicated that atomization of a liquid by vortex flow regulators accelerates oxygenation and prevents the putrefaction process in wastewater and storm water collection systems. The study presents experimental results of the oxygen transfer measurements for basic designs of cylindrical hydrodynamic flow regulators in a closed-circuit experimental setup at the semi-commercial scale. The oxygen mass transfer coefficient, standard oxygen transfer rate and standard aeration efficiency were determined for the range of tested configurations by the clean water test.
