    The article presents the relationship between one of the main representatives of Italian humanism – Pietro Bembo – with Poles. The most important aspect was his friendship with Klemens Janicki who studied in Padua in 1538–1540. His works are a testimony of contacts he had established when in Italy. Bembo was mentioned in Janicki’s works (Variae Elegiae IX,Epigrammata LII). Another element connecting the Italian with Poles were congratulatory letters on his cardinal appointment. The newly-appointed cardinal was congratulated by king Sigismund the Old via enigmatic figures of Jan Wincenty Dulcis de Lasco and Piotr Kmita.A trace of Bembo’s contact with Poles is also the formal correspondence of his while being the secretary of Pope Leo X.

    The author suggests that the intellectual life of Étienne Gilson constituted a new humanism, that Gilson’s scholarly work was part of a new renaissance, that a new humanism that Gilson thought is demanded by the precarious civilizational crisis of the modern West after World Wars I and II. He also argues that, more than anything else, Gilson was a renaissance humanist scholar who consciously worked in the tradition of renaissance humanists before him, but did so to expand our understanding of the notion of “renaissance” scholarship and to create his own brand of Christian humanism to deal with problems distinctive to his age. The author shows the specificity of the Christian humanism that Gilson developed as part of his distinctive style of doing historical research and of philosophizing.

    Artykuł jest próbą spojrzenia na polski humanizm renesansowy jako umiarkowany i samodzielny projekt modernizacyjny, w jego negocjacyjnych odniesieniach do tradycji antropologicznej, odmian mitu wieku złotego, zagadnień języka, a także dokonującej się wówczas rekonfiguracji mapy świata – z uwzględnieniem tego, co z oferty europejskiej nie zostało zasadniczo podjęte (np. melancholia generosa), jak również tego, na co został położony szczególny nacisk. W tej ostatniej sprawie mowa przede wszystkim o emancypacyjnym dążeniu do wyraźnego zaznaczenia tożsamości i specyfiki regionu Europy Wschodniej.
    This article is an attempt to take Polish renaissance humanism as a moderate and independent modernisation project, including its references to the anthropological tradition, the variants of  the myth of the golden age, the issues of language, as well as to the reconfiguration of the map of the world that was being carried out at that time. This paper also remarks on those important motifs of humanism that were not taken up (e.g. the concept of melancholia generosa) and those matters that were especially stressed by Polish authors, primarily, the emancipatory struggle to assert the identity and special character of Eastern Europe.

    Artystyczny manifest florenckiej Cameraty powszechnie uważa się za przełom nie tylko w stylistyce muzycznej, ale także w teoretycznej refleksji nad muzyką. W tradycyjnej muzykografii cezura roku 1600 jawi się jako dość wyraźna granica oddzielająca renesans od baroku. Muzyczne desygnaty obydwu tych epok są jednak bardzo niejasne, a ich stosowanie nieuchronnie prowadzi do sprzeczności. Za ich rozwiązanie posłużyć może taki model interpretacyjny, który wiąże twórczość muzyczną z nurtem inspiracji humanistycznych, obecnych w kulturze europejskiej co najmniej od połowy wieku XVI i trwających przez kolejne stulecie. Nurt ten doprowadził do znaczącego przewartościowania kwestii stylu w muzyce, co dość dobrze oddaje pojęcie manieryzmu.
    The artistic manifesto of Florentine Camerata is widely regarded as a breakthrough moment not only in musical stylistics but also in theoretical reflection on music. In traditional musicography, the year 1600 appears to be a fairly clear border separating the Renaissance from the Baroque. However, the musical designations of both periods are very vague and their application inevitably leads to contradictions. The solution to these contradictions can be a model of interpretation of the history of music that links musical creation with the current of humanistic inspirations that have been present in European culture at least since the mid-sixteenth century and lasting for the next hundred years. This trend has led to a significant re-evaluation of the issue of style in music, which reflects the concept of mannerism quite well.

    Przedmiotem artykułu są wyobrażenia na temat muzyki rekonstruowane na podstawie piśmiennictwa Erazma z Rotterdamu. Muzyczne imaginarium tego humanisty obejmuje przede wszystkim refleksje nad rolą sztuki dźwięku w edukacji, formacji religijnej, liturgii i życiu społecznym. Uwaga, którą poświęca tej formie ludzkiej aktywności, wiąże się z wywodzonym z tradycji antycznej i patrystycznej programem odnowy moralnej (renascentia). Pragmatyczne funkcje muzyki są w tym ujęciu jednak także kluczowym elementem jego narratywu humanistycznego, eksploatowanego później i rozwijanego w piśmiennictwie szesnastowiecznych reformatorów Kościoła.
    The article is devoted to the ideas about music reconstructed on the basis of Erasmus of Rotterdam’s writings. The humanist’s musical imagery includes mainly reflections on the role of the art of sound in education, religious formation, liturgy, and social life. The attention he paid to this form of human activity was related to a programme of moral renewal (renascentia) derived from ancient and patristic traditions. In this approach, however, the pragmatic functions of music are also a key element of his humanistic narrative, later exploited and developed in the writings of the sixteenth-century Church reformers.

    This paper is based on an analysis that compares some texts devoted to music taken from Łukasz Górnicki’s “Dworzanin polski” (1566) and Baldassarr Castiglione’s “Il libro del Cortigiano” (1528). The purpose of this comparison is to show the relationship of the works under study with the broad philosophical and literary tradition of the sixteenth century. It also seeks to answer the question about the function played by music and musical education in the image of a perfect courtier.

    L’Adieu du Monde ou Le Mespris de ses vaines grandeurs et plaisirs périssables de Dom Polycarpe de la Rivière est paru à Lyon en 1619. Son auteur qui fut chantre de la chapelle de Marguerite de Valois à Usson, et passa neuf ans à la Grande Chartreuse, met en écriture un vaste savoir joignant textes patristiques, érudition humaniste et poésies grecque, latine et française. Dom Polycarpe pratique la rhétorique de la citation, l’assortit de disquisitiones savantes et la met au service d’une dénonciation des attraits du Monde. Il convoque les autorités qu’il cite en juges et témoins. Le discours d’un mépris implacable envers les princes de l’Église, les courtisans et les femmes, n’arrive toutefois pas à masquer la parole d’un homme toujours hanté par la sensualité. Entre amour charnel et amour spirituel, l’ἔρως qui inspire le texte est plus proche de l’ésotérisme de Philon ou de Grégoire de Nysse que de l’ἁγάπη du maître de la spiritualité cartusienne, Saint Bernard. Le texte de L’Adieu du Monde est le témoin d’une forme de spiritualité partagée par certains cercles humanistes et un exemple d’écriture baroque, au crépuscule de la Renaissance française.
    L’Adieu du Monde ou Le Mespris de ses vaines grandeurs et plaisirs périssables by Dom Polycarpe de la Rivière was published in Lyon in 1619. The author was chorister in the chapel of the exiled Marguerite de Valois at Usson, and spent nine years in the monastery of la Grande Chartreuse. Dom Polycarpe displays a remarquable knowledge of Patristic and Humanist sources, and a taste for Greek, Latin and French contemporary poetry. The rhetoric of L’Adieu du Monde combines quotations from these sources, supported by learned disquisitions, with a relentless denunciation of Church grandees, courtiers and women. Dom Polycarpe summons his authorities as judges and witnesses to his contempt. Nevertheless, his learned rhetoric and his exposé of wordly vanities do not succeed in concealing a sensuality that still haunts him. Between spiritual and sensual love, the ἔρως that inspires the text is closer to Philo and Gregory of Nyssa than to Saint Bernard’s ἁγάπη. L’Adieu du Monde is an example of a form of spirituality shared by some humanist circles and of a baroque style of writing practised in the later period of the French Renaissance.

    Paul Vladimiri (1370–1435) was a distinguished Polish scholar and jurist who defended the rights of Poland and native non-Christian tribes against the Teutonic Knights and their policies of conquest. He expressed the view that a world guided by the principles of peace and mutual respect among nations was possible, and that pagan nations had a right to peace and to possession of their own lands. Vladimiri’s analysis of the right of native peoples to self-determination anticipated by several hundred years the investigations of many subsequent authors – including Francesco Vittoria, Bartolome de Las Casas, Hugo Grotius, and John Marshall. The influence of his views can be seen today, among others, in the theory of constitutional justice developed by the Italian legal theorist Gustavo Zagrebelsky. The main purpose of this article is to outline the views of Vladimiri and Zagrebelsky, and to analyze the principles of constitutional justice in its global dimension as a tool for resolving conflicts between states in the age of hybrid wars.
