Opis:
Introduction. The most important confirmative diagnostic test for trichinellosis is the presence of the muscle larvae in a tissue biopsy but this direct method has a low sensitivity of light and moderate infections. The aim of presented study was to compare the usefulness of the results obtained by three ELISA procedures for Trichinella spp. diagnosis in human outbreaks. Materials and methods. All sera (cases and controls) were tested for anti-Trichinella antibodies (immunoglobulin G) using commercially available Novatec KIT and two other ELISA procedures based on excretory-secretory (ES) antigens on Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae. The main differences in ELISA procedures were: the protein concentration in antigen, dilution of human serum samples, conjugate and the time of conjugate incubation. Additional differences were noticed in ES antigen preparation procedures as well as in T. spiralis isolates used in these procedures. Serum samples were obtained from 22 symptomatical patients from Poznań region (West Poland), geographic area where human outbreak had occurred. Control serum samples were obtained from 20 patients from an open population from a non endemic trichinellosis area. Results. The results were analyzed in terms of both: statistical and epidemiological point of view. Linear regression analysis and correlations coefficient r between OD values of total 22 patients obtained in three ELISA procedures were positive and high statistically significant. Three ELISA procedures revealed different cut-off values and positivity rates for outbreak. However, the majority of positive samples were found as positive in three procedures, but some of them were positive in two or one procedure only. These individual variability in sera reactivity observed in three ELISA procedures could be very important from epidemiological point of view.

Opis:
A 59-year-old farmer was admitted to the Department of Trauma Surgery because of pain associated with the presence of a tumour on the side of the right thigh. The patient stated that his biggest problem was great difficulty in moving and handling agricultural machinery due to the aforementioned lesion. On physical examination, the patient presented with numerous cutaneous and subcutaneous neurofibromas, as well as one large plexiform neurofibroma. Diagnosis of Neurofibromatosis type 1 was established, based on National Institutes of Health diagnostic criteria. Moreover, molecular genetic testing found known pathogenic mutation p.Arg1769* in one of the alleles of NF1 gene (heterozygote), typical for Recklinghausen disease. The big plexiform neurofibroma in the patient was not operated on because of lung cancer.

Artemisia campestris

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determinate whether Artemisia campestris was present in the vicinity of 8 pollen monitoring stations in Poland by examining temporal variations in daily average airborne Artemisia pollen data recorded by Hirst type volumetric traps. Three day moving averages of airborne Artemisia pollen were examined by Spearman’s rank correlation test. Results show that Artemisia pollen seasons in Poland generally display similar unimodal patterns (correlation coefficients r > 0.900; P < 0.05). The only exception was the Artemisia pollen concentration noted in the outskirts of Poznań (Morasko), where the bimodal pattern was revealed. Correlations between Artemisia pollen data recorded at Poznań-Morasko and the other Polish sites were the lowest in the investigated dataset; this was particularly noticeable in the second part of pollen season (r ~0.730). We show that the typical bimodal pattern in Artemisia pollen seasons, which is characteristic of the presence of both A. vulgaris (first peak) and A. campestris (second peak), does not occur at the majority of sites in Poland and is restricted to the outskirts of Poznań. In fact, it was noted that the pollen monitoring site in Poznań-Centre, just 8 km from Morasko, only exhibited one peak (attributed to A. vulgaris). This shows that the influence of A. campestris on airborne pollen season curves is limited and can be largely disregarded. In addition, this study supports previous records showing that the spatial distribution of airborne Artemisia pollen within a city (urban-rural gradient) can vary markedly, depending on the species composition.

Opis:
Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia and disturbances of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism. It is a major public health problem and disease burden worldwide, and especially in Nigeria. This study determined the gender differential in the incidence of Diabetes mellitus among the patients in Udi L.G.A of Enugu State. Three research questions and one hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. Descriptive survey design was employed. A sample of 343 diabetes mellitus patients were randomly selected and used for the study. Researchers design data documentary profoma was used to collect the data from selected health facilities in respect to the patients’ gender and their fasting sugar level as contained in their folder or hospital record/register. Frequency and percentages was used to answer research question while the null hypothesis was tested using Chi- square at 0.05 level of significance. The finding of the result revealed a high incidence of Diabetes Mellitus in 2012, females recorded a high incidence of DM from 2008-2012 and high percentage of fasting blood sugar level than male. The finding also revealed no difference in the fasting blood sugar based on gender. It is recommended among others that diagnostic investigation on human placental lactose is advocated to reduce or stop its opposition to insulin secretion during pregnancy.

Opis:
Ascariasis is the most common soil-transmitted helminth infection in the world. The objective of this study was to analyze the clinical symptoms and selected hematological indices of ascariasis in hospitalized children from the northeastern region of Poland. Patients in the Pediatric Ward hospitalized in the Regional Hospital in Dąbrowa Białostocka in the period of 2005–2007 were included in this retrospective study. The intestinal stage of ascariasis was diagnosed on the basis of positive coprological survey performed using the decantation technique. A total of 938 patients were included in the study, 1801 stool samples were evaluated, and A. lumbricoides-positive tests were obtained from 252 children. Ascaris-positive young children (3 yrs) accounted for 3.0% of all hospitalized children, Ascarispositive preschool-aged children (4–7 yrs) accounted for 8.1% and school-aged children (8–18 yrs) for 15.8%. Seasonal patterns were observed in the prevalence of A. lumbricoides (maximum in August–December). There was no relationship between BMI z-score, hemoglobin levels and prevalence of infection with Ascaris lumbricoides. Significant predictors of intestinal stage ascariasis in a multivariate logistic regression model were: abdominal pain as a reason for hospital admission (OR–2.19; 95%CI 1.62–2.95; p<0.001) and age from 4 to 7 years (OR–2.0; 95%CI 1.41–2.80; p<0.001). The prevalence rate of ascariasis was not higher in the group of patients with atopic diseases (bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis) and co-existing ascariasis did not affect the eosinophil counts in the peripheral blood. Ascariasis is still a current pediatric clinical problem characterized by non-specific clinical manifestations, which should be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of children’s diseases.
