The development of science, proceeding at a higher and higher speed, leads to the creation of new concepts, theories, and ideas. They constitute a progressive component of science. However, scientific development does not mean that everything that was accepted earlier has to be given up. New elements may be acquired and exist together with the old ones. Such old elements constitute a conservative component of science. That is why modern science shows itself as a wholeness constituted by the above-mentioned components.

This is a review of research conducted by the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and the Copernicus Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in the field of the history of philosophy of nature and the history of philosophy of science in Poland in the inter-war period. In spite of the domination of positivistic philosophy that tended to ignore philosophy of nature, this kind of philosophizing was quite popular in Poland. The review begins with a summary of works related to the history of science, and then deals, in some detail, with works on the theory of evolution and the theory of relativity, especially with their philosophical aspects. The remaining part of the review is devoted to the principal personalities of that period, namely: Władysław Heinrich, Władysław Natanson, Tadeusz Grabowski, Marian Smoluchowski, Zygmunt Zawirski and Joachim Metallmann.

The article shows the evolution of historians’ and sociologists’ views in 1874-2010 period how the historical relations between science and religion should be presented. The key theories have been discussed which are the milestones in this evolution: from 19th century Draper’s and White’s works which formed the so called conflict thesis to the present complexity thesis, which recognizes the religion as significant co-originator of modern science.

Andrzej Dragan’s book Quantechism or a cage for people is a great popular science book to start a fascinating adventure with the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. It is written in an easy language, does not require from the reader a deep knowledge of contemporary physical issues, while describing, illustrating and explaining them very well. Instead, it requires broader historical knowledge and at least basic philosophical knowledge for verification, helping to bring out what is most valuable in the book. Unfortunately, the book, while popularizing science, also makes a terrible mess and does a lot of damage to the deeper understanding of physics, its history, and the meaning and function of philosophy and religion. And so it can become an attractive and appealing, but nevertheless a trap-cage for thinking people.

Celem artykułu jest zarysowanie początków refleksji naukoznawczej historyka nauki profesora Stefana Zameckiego. Opracowanie ma charakter autobiograficzny i nawiązuje do wcześniejszych opracowań Autora. W tekście przeprowadzona została analiza głównych problemów badawczych rozprawy doktorskiej Stefana Zameckiego. Zatrzymano się nad rozumieniem wyrażenia „szkoła lwowsko-warszawska”. Uwzględniono najważniejsze etapy procesu dojrzewania i krystalizowania się koncepcji naukoznawstwa u Autora opracowania.
The aim of the article is to outline the beginnings of scientific reflection by the historian of science, Professor Stefan Zamecki. The study is autobiographical and refers to the author’s earlier studies. The text analyzes the main research problems of Stefan Zamecki’s doctoral dissertation. The expression “The Lwów-Warsaw School” was stopped. The most important stages of the maturation and crystallization of the concept of science in the author of the study were taken into account.

Three essential periods may be singled out in the development of cartography as a science: 1. From the beginning of the last century to the mid-sixties is the period of development of cartography as a distinct science. 2. The period dating from the mid-sixties till the eighties is the golden age of development of theoretical cartography with special amplification of discussions on the subject of the theoretical fundamentals of cartography. At the end of the former period and at the beginning of the latter, cartography finally distinguished itself as an independent science. In 1959, the International Cartographic Association was founded. In 1961, the International Yearbook of Cartography was published for the first time and beginning in 1969, Polski Przegląd Kartograficzny (the Polish Cartographic Review). A year earlier, Komisja Kartograficzna Polskiego Towarzystwa Geograficznego (the Cartographic Commission of the Polish Geographical Society) was established. 3. Since the mid-eighties, and even somewhat earlier, use of new IT technologies, especially interest in the map as an element of geographic information systems, has become the dominating trend in cartography.

Special attention is paid to the unification work by M. Hanow (1747), the analytical balance of H. Koncepcja ideałów nauki była wkładem Stefana Amsterdamskiego do sporu na temat racjonalności naukowej. Przyjmując, iż metoda naukowa nie jest zjawiskiem ponadhistorycznym i że towarzyszą jej silne presupozycje normatywne, Amsterdamski staje po stronie Kuhna w jego dyskusji z Popperem oraz jego kontynuatorami i poplecznikami. W istotnym sensie Amsterdamski jest jednak Popperystą, jego intencją jest bowiem rozszerzenie zasięgu krytycznej dyskusji poprzez odniesienie analiz krytycznych do czegoś, co określa on nowożytnym ideałem nauki. Prace Amsterdamskiego, zwłaszcza omawiana w artykule monografia Między historią a metodą, są jednocześnie próbą zabezpieczenia statusu filozofii nauki jako instancji normatywnej w stosunku do ideałów nauki. Artykuł stanowi rekonstrukcję koncepcji Amsterdamskiego i zawiera analizę krytyczną relacji między celami, jakie Amsterdamski sobie stawiał, oraz metodami ich realizacji. Wskazuję na elementy, które wydają mi się w koncepcji ideałów nauki najbardziej problematyczne, sugerując alternatywne sformułowania podnoszonych przez Amsterdamskiego problemów. Wykazuję, iż koncepcja Amsterdamskiego upoważnia do podjęcia próby opracowania nowej koncepcji podmiotu nauki, która to koncepcja mogłaby dostarczyć odpowiednich wskazówek do krytyki nowożytnego ideału nauki.
The conception of ideals of science was Stefan Amsterdamski’s contribution to the dispute about scientific rationality. In assuming that scientific method is not an ahistorical phenomenon, and comes with rather strong normative pressupositions, Amsterdamski sides with Thomas Kuhn in his debate with Karl Popper and the latter’s followers and supporters. Essentially, however, Amsterdamski is a Popperian; he is intent on enlarging the scope of critical analysis by applying it to what he calls the modern ideal of science. His works, especially the monograph Pomiędzy historią a metodą [Between History and Method] are an attempt to safeguard the status of philosophy of science a normative instance with respect to ideals of science. In the paper I offer a reconstruction of Amsterdamski’s conception as well as scrutinize the relationship between his expressed philosophic goals and methods he employed in order to attain these goals. I indicate what I find most problematic in the concept of ideal of science and suggest an alternative view on the problems as raised by Amsterdamski. I argue that Amsterdamski’s work warrants an attempt at the formulation of a new conception of subject of science which would provide guidelines for a proper critique of modern science.

Zygmunt Wojciechowski (1900–1955) was a historian of law at the University of Poznan. A student of one of the greatest Polish historians – Oswald Balzer – he was a medievalist, heavily involved in politics both in the times of Second Republic and the beginning of the Polish People’s Republic. His works comprised of content of cognitive qualities, but was always strongly coloured with politics. He was the creator of the theory of native Polish lands, located between Odra, Warta and Vistula Rivers. He is looking at history through the prism of Polish-German relations and he critically evaluates the history of the state, which moved away from traditional Polish settlement areas and led a disastrous policy of expansion to the East, which brought its fall and partitions. Wojciechowski welcomed the return of Poland to the western lands (recovered) in 1945, as a compensation of wrongs suffered in the struggle against Germany. The literature on works of Wojciechowski is controversial and requires recognition in a new synthetic book, which is the main thesis of this study
