    The Knight’s Tale continues the epic tradition and is worth reading from the perspective of the history of emotions, which allows us to interpret not only texts written after the “affective turn” of the eighteenth century, but also earlier ones. Emotions can be “found” in Chaucer’s text, to mention only honour as a “lost” emotion. Other questions that need to be addressed are the weakening or empowering potential of emotions and feelings as something that is able to change collective bodies.

    Opis:
    The interest in the issue of emotions both in everyday world and in academic circles is a phenomenon that should not be ignored. It reflects cultural changes, but is also a result of deep thought on the world of feelings – their nature, social role and forms of expression. The aim of this article is to juxtapose the dominant ways of conceptualizing emotions in social and historiographical discourse. The conducted studies allowed identification of three basic conceptions about the role and nature of emotions. For the needs of this essay, they are named “inherent emotions”, “restrained emotions” and “constructed emotion”. They are based on differently understood nature of emotionality. Thus, the use of each of them leads to different conclusions in the constructed social and humanistic reflection.

    The author proposes tools for the analysis of affects in politics. First she distinguishes three historical ways of thinking about affective phenomena: the tradition of passion, deriving from ancient Greece; the tradition of feelings, begun by the Greek and Roman stoics; and finally the tradition of emotions, which was fully shaped in the nineteenth century and which most closely corresponds to the contemporary understanding of affective phenomena. The author concentrates on the meeting of two fields—the history of emotions and the philosophy of politics. Each of the three traditions of thinking has its own specific doctrine for dealing with affects, that is, it indicates ways of managing the unusually difficult challenges presented by our emotions. The author describes and critiques these approaches. She believes that although they are often burdened with presentism and anachronism, taking them into account in analyses of the social world—especially in the sphere of contemporary politics—could help understand the nuances of political thought and actions.

Niewielka liczba opracowań podejmujących temat w odniesieniu do polskiej historii czyni z opracowania rzecz wartą szczegółowego omówienia i refleksji nad ogólnym stanem badań w subdyscyplinie.
    Bruno Kamiński’s book analyses the efforts made by propaganda in post-war Poland (until 1956) to fuel, control, and channel fear. At the same time, it is a book on the history of emotions, showing how a specific feeling appeared and was shaped in a specific socio-political context. The small number of studies addressing this topic concerning Polish history makes the study worth discussing in detail and reflecting on the general state of research in the sub-discipline.

    Opis:
    The nature of emotions has long preoccupied psychologists, psychiatrists, linguists, neurobiologists, and many other researchers. It is difficult to imagine life without emotion. Recently, individuals have started to invest time and energy in ensuring their emotional stability and happiness. Despite increased interests in addressing and understanding emotions, many questions remain. This article explores the linguistic-cultural implications of learning the emotional language in Polish. It examines the associations between cultural contexts and specific language choices and uses during given emotional situations in different languages. The investigation will consider the history of emotions, cultural scripts, as well as the cultural surpluses contained within respective lexemes. Included are various exercises that can be used in classes for foreign language learners and candidates for Polish teachers.
    Natura emocji to zagadnienie od wielu lat frapujące psychologów, psychiatrów, lingwistów, neurobiologów i wielu innych badaczy. Trudno sobie wyobrazić życie bez uczuć. Szczególnie dzisiaj człowiek poświęca wiele czasu i energii na wprawianie siebie w dobry nastrój. Zabiegi te jednak wcale nie ułatwiają kwestii mówienia o emocjach. W artykule tym autorka zastanawia się nad implikacjami lingwakulturowymi w odniesieniu do nauczania języka emocji po polsku. Poszukuje zależności między kontekstem kulturowym a doborem konkretnych środków językowych w określonych sytuacjach emocjonalnych w różnych językach. Przygląda się historyczności emocji, skryptom kulturowym, a także ładunkom kulturowym zawartym w poszczególnych leksemach. Proponuje wiele ćwiczeń, które można wykorzystać zarówno na zajęciach z cudzoziemcami, jak i lektorkami i lektorami języków obcych.
