    In the second half of the 18th century, musical education in Poland was poor. The Commission of National Education (1773–1793) did not take music into account in its projects. The individual willing to change the situation was Father Wacław Sierakowski (1741–1806), provost of the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow. He played a significant role in the musical life of the city as an organiser of public concerts and founder of a private music school. In 1795–1796, he published a three-volume musical textbook, The Art of Music for Young Polish People (Sztuka muzyki dla młodzieży krajowej), one of the first musical textbooks in the Polish language. In Sierakowski’s publication the stress was put on the social and national value of music. The first volume also featured Sierakowski’s petition from 1792, intended for submission before the Sejm (Polish Parliament), in which the author propounded the idea of the state taking over musical education and establishing a major statesponsored music school in Krakow (Alumnatus Vocalistarum). These plans were never carried out as the third partition of Poland ensued in 1795.

    W 2022 roku przypada 25 rocznica powstania Katedry Historii Wychowania funkcjonującej w ramach obecnego Wydziału Pedagogicznego Akademii Ignatianum w Krakowie. Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie sylwetki pierwszego kierownika katedry, ks. prof. Ludwika Piechnika SJ. Badania przeprowadzono metodą analizy dokumentów – zarówno źródłowych, jak i opracowań. Artykuł wpisuje się w nurt badań biograficznych. Śledząc edukacyjne losy ks. Ludwika Piechnika, można zauważyć, że jego życie utkane było z wydarzeń, decyzji, które budowały krok po kroku wychowawcę młodzieży, naukowca, wykładowcę akademickiego, wreszcie kierownika katedry. Był historykiem i pedagogiem, dlatego badanie przeszłości edukacyjnej pozostawało w polu jego głównych zainteresowań. Zajmowała go również edukacyjna teraźniejszość, w którą zaangażował się jako wychowawca i organizator opieki zastępczej. Z analizy biografii Profesora Ludwika Piechnika wyłania się sylwetka osoby, która – przejawiając niezwykłą wrażliwość wobec dzieci i młodzieży – nie ograniczała się do analiz teoretycznych, ale wyrażała przekonanie, że trzeba być blisko tych, o których się pisze. Można zatem powiedzieć o nim, że potrafił umiejętnie łączyć teorię z edukacyjną praktyką.
    2022 will mark the 25th anniversary of the functioning of the Chair of the History of Education as part of the present Faculty of Pedagogy of the Jesuit University Ignatianum in Krakow. The aim of the article is to present the profile of its first chairman, Father Professor Ludwik Piechnik S.J. The research was carried out using the method of the analysis of documents – both source documents and studies. The article is written within the framework of the biographical research trend. Following the educational career of Fr. Ludwik Piechnik, one can see that his life was interwoven with events and decisions which all contributed to the formation of an educator of youth, a scientist, a university lecturer, and finally the chair of the department. He was a historian and an educator, so the study of the educational past remained in his field of interest. He was also concerned with the educational present, and was involved as an educator and organizer of foster care. An analysis of Professor Ludwik Piechnik’s biography reveals the profile of a person who, showing unusual sensitivity towards children and young people, did not limit himself to theoretical analyses, but expressed the conviction that one should be close to those about whom one writes. Therefore, it can be said that he was able to skillfully combine theory with educational practice.

    The manuscript legacy of Józef Muczkowski, preserved in the Jagiellonian Library, includes extensive notes and materials to the lectures on bibliography, defined as the book science in the broadest sense. Muczkowski had been giving these lectures for 21 years, in the period 1837-1858. The article characterizes generally physical form, formal and content aspects of these manuscripts. The author notices a variety of their form and inconsistency of elaboration, successive completion and updating, or even the existence of several versions of particular subjects. The article presents also in extenso three lists of examine questions prepared by the lecturer to verify students’ knowledge of book science. As such, they have not been known to the book scientists so far, and therefore they are unique and still valid. Analysis of sources to these lectures revealed that, besides works of Joachim Lelewel, Muczkowski referred also to the texts of outstanding foreign human¬ists, experts in library science – both theoreticians and practitioners: F.A. Ebert, Ch. Molbech, M. Schrettinger, P.A. Budik, J.P. Namur, J. Ch. Friedrich, A.H.L. Heeren, and F. Wilken.
