Opis:: Priest Franciszek Józef Wybicki came from a moderately rich noble family, who rendered great service to the country. Judging from the numerous posts he served at the request of the bishops of Włocławek, he was an educated theologian and lawyer. Apart from managing the parish of the Archangel Michael in Skarszewy (1736-1765), he was a surrogate to several general officials in Gdańsk since 1743; in 1747 he was first mentioned as one of the canons in the Włocławek chapter. Since 1758 he was the chancellor of the Kruszwice chapter and the archdeacon of the Pomorian District since 1764. His business activity was limited to the parish in Skarszewy, situated in the vicinity of Gdansk. First of all, he rebuilt the parish church, which had been consecrated in 1750, where he founded two altars: the main altar, devoted to the Archangel Michael and the one devoted to St Mary. In addition, he built a poor-house for 8 people and furnished it generously. The farm buildings were also restored. He tried to regain the sums due to the provosts of Skarszewy, suing the debtors in six trials; he won one case, two others were still in court when he died and, in view of the fact that he lacked sufficient evidence to win, he renounced the remaining ones. Priest F.J. Wybicki did not do any business himself; he was content with rebuilding and leasing two home farms, a large and a small one; he also regenerated the parish forest and renounced the taproom rights. He collected tithes, offerings on account of iura stolae or Christmas visits, Easter confessions or donations for celebrating masses. The total parish revenues came up to 3 thousand florins and about 200 bushels of wheat and oats. The tenants were obliged to work 132 days a year for him. Owing to his efforts, the revenues rose by 50%, the parish remaining one of the most profitable in 18th century Poland. It should be noted that he resigned the offerings of the guild of bakers, whose request to do so was based on their difficult financial situation.

Opis:: Since the beginning of its existence, the Polish Church took an active part in the Christianization of the neighbouring pagan peoples. One of its missionary areas was the land inhabited by the Prussians. These missions were conducted in three stages. The first one was the mission undertaken by Saint Wenceslaus under the patronage of duke Boleslaw the Valiant (Polish: Bolesław Chrobry). During this mission St Wenceslaus died a martyr’s death, which was used as a factor promoting the Polish Church while creating metropolitan church organization in 1000. The second stage was the missionary activity at the time of Henryk Kietlicz, the archbishop of Gniezno, at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, which was interrupted by the appearance of the Teutonic Order in Prussia. The action of the Teutonic Knights in Prussia was the third stage of Christianization. However, this evangelization was the German method of conducting a mission- that is to say, by the sword. The objective of the Teutonic Knights was to create their own state in Prussia rather than convert pagans to Christianity. The description of these processes was based on the Annals of Jan Dlugosz, which shows how the memories of those events were retained.

Opis:: Der Artikel versucht, den Zustand des unierten Pfarrschulwesens im 18. Jahrhundert im Königreich Polen auf der Grundlage der in den Visitationsakten enthaltenen Angaben zu präsentieren. Das Bild des Pfarrschulnetzes der katholischen Kirche orientalischen Ritus', wie sich es aus den analysierten Quellen ergibt, ist eher negativ. Deshalb werden im vorliegenden Artikel auch Hypothesen hinsichtlich einer Beantwortung der Frage nach den Ursachen dafür aufgestellt.

Opis:: Artykuł dotyczy zapomnianego pisarza XIX w. Michała Budzyńskiego oraz jego twórczości: powieści Urbi et orbi (1859) oraz Wspomnień z mojego życia (powst. 1860, wyd. 1880). Autorka skupiła się na związkach fikcji (Urbi et orbi) z dokumentem (Wspomnienia z mojego życia) i sposobem, w jaki materia powieści funkcjonuje w pamiętnikach. I zadaje pytania o sens niezamierzonego przez autora zderzania fikcji i dokumentu. W konkluzji zauważa, że Budzyński potraktował Urbi et orbi jako swoistą przypowieść o przełomie duchowym i nawróceniu, natomiast pamiętniki są nie tylko zapisem biografii pisarza, lecz także apologią księcia Czartoryskiego.
The article deals with Michał Budzyński’s novel Urbi et orbi (1859) and Memoirs of my life (1860). Budzyński belongs to the forgotten authors of XIX c. Polish literature. The author presents Budzyński’s biography and what can be called – leitmotiv of life: the attitude to Andrzej Towiański and Adam Mickiewicz. Budzyński presents himself as “child of XVIII’s philosophy” and keeps distance to the Catholic Church and all gnostic tendencies of his time. He leads so called “campaign of distrust” against Andrzej Towiański and Mickiewicz as Towiański’s supporter. Budzyński meets the author of Konrad Wallenrod in Rome 1848. A stay in Rome is one of the most important events in his life: once again he confronts Mickiewicz and his ideas, falls in love with a young Polish lady and finally he returns to the Church. All experiencesin Rome are described in the novel Urbi et orbi. This forgotten novel connects with the matter of Memoirs. The main character of fiction can be considered as a porte parole of Michał Budzyński. The fiction describes the turn in Budzyński’s life which leads him to return to country and conversion. This biography can be implicated in the historical context of XIX c., when the matter of national identity becomes primary towards the faith. Budzyński turns this dependence: first spiritual community designates community of nation. Being a patriot means to belong to the community.

Belarusian component in the artistic and publicistic heritage of M.
