    The main aim of this paper is to show how model of family changed through the centuries (especially in XIX and XX century). Objects of examinations are women’s autobiographies treated as very interesting archive of different topics – one of them is family. Family in women’s personal documents isn’t only a topic, but also it shapes private stories. Autobiographies in this perspective solidify stories about families and help to settle up with family memory, it positive and negative side. Gender aspects of narrations makes more visible cultural, related with customs and historical contexts shaping model of family. In this text traditional and unconventional families are going to be presented as well as relations between family members.

    The article focuses on autobiographical films by Polish-American documentary filmmaker whose most personal project is Never Forget to Lie (2012) about Jews rescued from the Warsaw ghetto in their early childhood. Marzyński is a Holocaust survivor himself and a television reporter who emigrated from communist Poland in 1969. He has been gradually transforming the style of the documentary films he made in the West to make them more and more personal by referring to his biography. Marzyński’s cinéma vérité techniques include initiating emotional in-front-of-the-camera interviews with Holocaust survivors and witnesses of History in the meaningful surrounding of historical places. In this way, the filmmaker makes the architecture, landscape and personal objects “speak” about the past or uses them to stimulate the memory of the interviewed people. The only quoted film material, or found footage, comes from his own archives, where he has been collecting his released documentaries together with never used scenes and takes.

    “Night has enshrouded my childhood” write Jorge Semprun. Civil War and exile have erased any trace of the childhood he spent in Madrid. What was left to the writer were only flashes of memory and an old picture of his mother. Jorge Semprun was eight years of age when his mother died of septicemia. Through writing, thirty years later, he was able to evoke her death, but how was he to tell about her absence? Between fiction and reality, five of Jorge Semprun’s novels recreate his childhood. His mother will first of all be an absence or an implicit presence behind his relating the city of his childhood. Having set the scene, ghostly characters whose identities are undefined but whose discourses become more and more outlined will appear. The mother will become a nostalgic absence. Her features, her character will be sketched out. Jorge Semprun will move forward hiding behind the multiple identities of his characters and the freedom which fiction provides him. It will be up to the last character, a fictive double of the writer, to find the last traces of a mother who has turned into a haunting presence.

    Tekst jest próbą wskazania wzajemnych zależności pomiędzy dwoma gatunkami literatury dokumentu osobistego – esejem i autobiografią, oraz dwiema kategoriami wewnątrz i ponadgatunkowymi – eseistycznością i autobiograficznością, możliwymi do uchwycenia w Widzeniu bliskim i dalekim Zofii Nałkowskiej. W antologii, składającej się z kilkudziesięciu zróżnicowanych gatunkowo tekstów, można zauważyć nakładanie się na siebie wymienionych cech, powodowane przez nie przekształcenia oraz ich łączenie się z twórczością powieściową i diarystyczną autorki. Zbiór tekstów, obejmujących pół wieku, zawierający zarówno teksty wspomnieniowe, podróżne, recenzje, odczytany z uwzględnieniem perspektywy krytyczno-feministycznej, staje się cennym ogniwem historii polskiej eseistyki kobiet.
    The text indicates the relations between two genres of literature of personal document – an essay and autobiography, and two categories within and beyond genres – “essayism” and autobiographical. They can be captured in Widzenie bliskie i dalekie (The vision nearby and distant) written by Zofia Nałkowska. In anthology, where several genre-rich texts were put together, one can notice the superimposing of the above-mentioned features, the transformations they made and their connection with the author’s novels and diaristic writing. The collection of texts covering half a century, encompassing memoirs, travel writings, reviews, read out with regard to the feminist perspective, becomes one of the most valuable item in the history of Polish essay written by women.

Zaremba, jako architekt i polityk, nie tylko miał wpływ na odbudowę miasta po wojnie, ale także przyczynił się do kształtowania tożsamości mieszkańców. Działalność Zaremby – polityczna i pamiętnikarska – miała przy tym wymiar europejski: był poliglotą i sprawnym dyplomatą, który często podróżował po Starym Kontynencie.
    The article analyses the memoires of Piotr Zaremba – an urbanist, a writer, the first president of the Polish Szczecin in 1945–1950. Being both an architect and a politician, Zaremba not only had an impact on the reconstruction of the city after the war, but also contributed to shaping the identity of the city residents. Zaremba's activity – political and memoirist one – was of European dimension: he was a polyglot and an efficient diplomat who often travelled the Old Continent.

    Niniejszy artykuł to próba rekapitulacji powstawania i przemian sposobów czytania oraz interpretowania autobiografii kobiet. W tekście szczególny nacisk położono na wskazanie stopniowego narastania refleksji teoretycznej, wspieranej przez rozwiązania zaczerpnięte z krytyki feministycznej. Zarówno historia, jak i teoria autobiografii pisanych przez kobiety, w miarę ewolucji dyskursu emancypacyjnego i literaturoznawczego, zmieniały swoje oblicze, stawały się bogatsze, dzięki uwzględnianiu coraz zasobniejszej biblioteki kobiecej literatury dokumentu osobistego. Dodatkowo, na zmiany w obrębie praktyk lekturowych niebagatelny wpływ miały nowe odmiany gatunków autobiograficznych, tworzone przez piszące kobiety. Także dzięki nim literatura dokumentu osobistego z kobiecą sygnaturą ciągle jest niezwykle ciekawym polem działań pisarskich oraz interpretacyjnych.
    This paper attempts to present the progress of changes of ways reading and interpreting women’s autobiographies. A special attention was given to the increasing influence of theoretical considerations, connected with tools taken from feminist literary criticism. Both history and theory of women’s autobiographical writing, as time went by, became more abundant, which resulted, among other factors, from the increasing amount of women’s literature. The reading of women’s autobiographical writing itself has been altered by new genres of that kind of friting.These new genres are also the reason why one cannot but find women’s autobiographical writing to be an utmost interesting interpretative field.

    Artykuł Die DDR in einer Autobiographie. Zu Werner Heiduczeks „Die Schatten meiner Toten” [NRD w pewnej autobiografii. O tekście Wernera Heiduczka „Cienie moich zmarłych”] jest wynikiem badań prowadzonych przez autora nad obrazem NRD w literaturze dokumentu osobistego (autobiografii) pisarzy z NRD po zjednoczeniu Niemiec w roku 1990. Prezentowany tekst jest analizą autobiografii niemieckiego pisarza Wernera Heiduczka „Die Schatten meiner Toten”, opublikowanej w Lipsku, w roku 2005. Właściwą analizę poprzedzają krótki portret pisarza oraz przyczynek o autobiografii jako gatunku literackim i jego roli w odniesieniu do tekstu Heiduczka. Analiza skupia się na skomplikowanym stosunku pisarza do NRD, jego ocenie najważniejszych wydarzeń w NRD: powstaniu 17.06.1953 oraz przełomu roku 1989, zachowaniu wobec wydarzeń wokół W. Biermanna w 1976 roku oraz własnym miejscu w społeczeństwie i polityce jak również życiu osobistym.
    The paper Die DDR in einer Autobiographie. Zu Werner Heiduczeks ‘Die Schatten meiner Toten’ [GDR in an autobiography. The text of the Werner Heiduczek’s ‘Shadows of my dead’] is the result of research conducted by the author over the image of the GDR in the literature of personal documents (autobiography) writers from East Germany after reunification in 1990. The present text is an analysis of the autobiography of a German writer Werner Heiduczek ‘Die Schatten meiner Toten’, published in Leipzig in 2005. The analysis is preceded by a brief portrait of the writer and the contribution of autobiography as a literary genre and its role in relation to the text of Heiduczek. The analysis focuses on the complex relationship of the writer to the GDR, his assessment of the most important events in the GDR: uprising of 17th June 1953 and turn of 1989, keeping the events around W. Biermann in 1976 and its own place in society and politics as well as personal life.

    Autor artykułu omawia autobiografię Karola Modzelewskiego w kilku perspektywach. Ogólna perspektywa teoretycznoliteracka wskazuje na dominację aspektu świadectwa. Kreacja podmiotu wskazuje na przestrzeń autobiografii jako na miejsce spotkania roli aktywnego uczestnika wydarzeń historycznych z rolą profesjonalnego historyka. Tym samym adresat książki wydaje się również zasadniczo podwójny – to czytelnik o nastawieniu poznawczym, zainteresowany historią najnowszą, ale także krytyczny wobec współczesności obywatel, podzielający wraz z autorem wiarę w sensowność poczynań rewolucyjnych. Horyzont metodologiczny refleksji Modzelewskiego wyznacza historiografia nieklasyczna (zwłaszcza w jej odmianie antropologicznej) – akademickie kompetencje mediewisty spotykają się tu z doświadczeniami uczestnika i badacza historii powojennej. Wreszcie perspektywa osobistej wrażliwości eksponuje znaczenie wstydu jako przestrzeni spotkania indywidualnego losu z losami wspólnoty. W tym sensie działalność publiczną Karola Modzelewskiego można przedstawić jako odpowiedź na wstyd.
    The article discusses some aspects of an autobiography by Karol Modzelewski. Its general theoretical-literary approach exposes the domination of the aspect of testimony in the text. The creation of the subject points to an area of autobiography as a venue of a role of an active participant in historic events with a role of a professional historian. As a result an addressee of the book also seems basically double: it is a reader showing a cognitive approach, interested in the newest history as well as a citizen critical of the present, sharing the faith in the sense of revolutionary actions along with the author. The methodological horizon of Modzelewski’s reflection has been outlined by nonclassical historiography (particularly in its anthropological version). Thus academic competence of a mediaevalist meets here the experience of a participant and a researcher of the post-war history. At last, a perspective of a personal sensitivity exposes the importance of shame as a meeting-place for an individual fate and the collective fate. In this sense the public activity of Karol Modzelewski might be depicted as a response to shame.

    The article is devoted to the memoirs “The history of my century and people who I lived with” by Frantsishek Karpinsky (1741–1825) – Polish writer, poet and playwright. The author of the article examines the process of writing and publishing the work, studies its genre innovation in the methods of describing a person’s spiritual life in real historic circumstances, analyzes the subjects and problems of memories. The attention is also paid to peculiarities of the writer’s style connected with the Age of Enlightenment.

    The paper is an attempt at showing – through the prism of autobiographical reflection – the location of tradition, as understood by Wilhelmina Zyndram‑Kościałkowska (1844–1926), a translator, writer and literary critic. The notion of location is understood by the author as a particular, restricted, time‑spatial reservoir of meanings, perceived in a broader perspective, that is as a component of a larger whole. The location of tradition is a segment and stage concerning a problem residuum of meanings in culture and history, as well as in the history of thought, which has been located in the space of individual biography of Kościałkowska, constructed with an old hand of the writer and placed as a component of diagnoses in her contemporaneity. The research material includes manuscripts (notebooks with memories and other types of autobiographical archives), deposited in the Lithuanian State Historical Archives in Vilnius (Lietuvos Valstybės Istorijos Archyvas). The author shows various ways of conducting dialogue by the critic with the old tradition (history, politics, culture, portraits of people, literature, art, family history) and the meaning of the location of tradition in the process of recording oneself and one’s contemporaneity by Kościałkowska.
