    Whilst Poland appears today as a paradigmatic example of a homogeneous, exclusive national and cultural identity, reinforced by the hegemonic historical policy of a semi-authoritarian state, it is also challenged by Polish minority histories (civilian, multi-ethnic, non-Catholic, women). The main concern of the present article is the plural ‘Polishness’ that emerges from the constellation of these non-default histories. To examine the frictions of historical narratives in action, authors use spaces of historical museums as a field of observation, perceiving them as memory agents fostering not only confrontational but also negotiative memory politics. To identify situations in which tensions between the ‘central’ Polishness and its unorthodox variants are particularly evident, the paper takes a look at ‘non-central’ Polish territories i.e. ‘post-German’ areas, characterized by a complex heterogeneous past in which Germanness and Polishness, but also ‘Silesianness’ or ‘Borderlandness’ mutually clash and dialogue. Analysis of selected exhibitions’ construction reveals peculiarities of different local contexts in transitional spaces and strategies of resolving creeping conflicts between ‘the Polishness’ and plural, peripheral ‘Polishnesses’. As authors argue, these case studies – instead of a static model of open memory conflict and binaries – offer dynamic models of memory, and allow to introduce the concept of memory frictions.

    The article presents the concepts of the exhibitions devoted to the contemporary history of Western Pomerania, which took place in the National Museum in Szczecin from 2002 till now. The four most important exhibitions have been analysed in a more detailed way; they exemplify the change in priorities and presentation methods of the history of the Region and the values around which the narrative of the exhibitions was created. The analysis indicates that there has been an evolution in the exhibition techniques and an increase of the role of museological education as a factor shaping the social memory of the past.

    The Author considers a trend, which comes from the west, to use post-industrial developments for museums. The article includes issues concerning adaptation of post-industrial developments for museum functions, references to history and identity of the building concerned, as well as relations of an institution — which is hosted within the historical construction — with the surroundings. The museums which have been selected for the analysis are representative for a boom observed in Poland since the beginning of the 21st century — the majority of newly-established museums are located in adapted old buildings, the museums representing almost exclusively only two categories: historical museums and contemporary art museums. The Author seeks an answer to a question whether museums must follow current trends. She concludes that a quest for success translating to a good image and high attendance is and certainly shall remain an important goal of a museum. She warns, however, of dangers related with a museum trying to be a “trendy” place to attend, especially in the times of public life commercialization, which is more and more common.

    Punktem wyjścia rozważań są koncepcje Pierra Nory oraz Alison Landsberg. Odchodzenie bezpośrednich świadków historii zdaniem P. Nory zrzuca na instytucje archiwizujące (w tym na muzea) obowiązek magazynowania śladów przeszłości. Natomiast A. Landsberg obnaża postępujący proces uzależniania się mechanizmów kształtowania pamięci we współczesnym społeczeństwie od najnowszych technologii i produktów popkultury. Muzea Holokaustu poszukują adekwatnego języka mówienia o Zagładzie w sytuacji, gdy podobnie jak inne instytucje muzealne muszą dopasować się do nowych oczekiwań odbiorców i dostosować swoją przestrzeń i sposób eksponowania do aktualnych warunków kulturowych. W szerszy nurt zmian kulturowych wpisać możemy proces deprofesjonalizacji pamięci oraz nowy paradygmat zdobywania wiedzy. Wyniki badań empirycznych dowodzą, że odbiorca nie oczekuje jedynie intelektualnego kontaktu z przeszłością; najbardziej pożądaną formą poznania minionych wydarzeń jest przekroczenie biernej granicy obserwacji oraz pragnienie zmysłowego doznania historii. W tej perspektywie Miejsce Pamięci i Muzeum Auschwitz-Birkenau jako fizyczny ślad przeszłości, zgodnie z koncepcją Aleidy Assmann o "pamięci miejsca", gwarantuje doznania zmysłowe i afektywne. W dalszej części artykułu przedstawiono strategie wykorzystywania produktów popkulturowych do przetwarzania i opisywania wydarzeń historycznych, sposoby organizowania przestrzeni muzealnej oddziałującej na emocje i wyobraźnię odbiorcy, zachęcającej do indywidualnego odkrywania historii oraz związane z tym obawy przed banalizacją i trywializacją przekazu.
    The starting point for the discussion are the concepts of Pierre Nora and Alison Landsberg. According to P. Nora, the passing away of eyewitnesses to history transfers the obligation to store the traces of the past onto archiving institutions (including museums). A. Landsberg, in turn, reveals the process in which the mechanisms of memory shaping in the contemporary society become dependent on the state-of-the-art technologies and pop-culture products. Museums of the Holocaust are searching for an appropriate language to talk about the Holocaust in a situation where, like other museum institutions, they have to adjust to the new expectations of the audience, and tailor their space and ways of exhibition to the current cultural conditions and new means of learning. Empirical investigations have proven that nowadays receivers do not merely expect to approach the past intellectually, but also to cross the passive boundary of observation, and desire to have sensual experience of history. From this perspective, the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum as a physical trace of the past, in accordance with Aleida Assmann's concept of "a memory of place", provides the visitors with sensual and emotional experience. In its further part, the article presents strategies for using the products of popular culture for processing and describing historical events, the ways of organizing museum space which affects the emotions and the imagination of receivers and invites them to discover history for themselves. Also, it discusses the resulting concerns about the potential trivialization of the communicated message.
