    The search for connections between history and literature has been going on continuously since antiquity. Interference between disciplines is obvious today, due to the narrative form of application, bringing the stories told closer to the novel. The search for non-narrative connections continues to this day. The main task of this article is to conduct a brief analysis of the basic interpretations of both disciplines and to indicate their role in building alternative literary stories. It also serves to show that categories such as narrative, imagery, truth and fiction play a pivotal role in the historiographic teaching process through alternative literary histories.

    Pojęcie faktu historycznego jest jedną z podstawowych kategorii metodologicznych w badaniach historycznych. Na pierwszy rzut oka wśród historyków wydaje się być pojęciem z rzędu oczywistych, zgodnym z tzw. zdrowym rozsądkiem. W praktyce badawczej jednak obserwuje się różne rozumienie faktu – od pozytywistycznego, podkreślającego jego obiektywne istnienie, do postmodernistycznego, które temu obiektywizmowi zaprzecza. Pomiędzy tymi skrajnymi postawami mieści się wiele odcieni pośrednich, czyniąc teorię faktu historycznego jednym z głównych problemów współczesnej teorii historii.
    The concept of historical fact is a fundamental methodological category in historical research. Apparently it seems to be an obvious and common sense concept among historians. In research, however, we can observe a different understanding of fact ranging from a positivist approach, emphasizing its objective existence to a postmodernist orientation that denies this objectivity. Between these two extremes there are numerous indirect nuances making the theory of historical fact one of the main problems of contemporary theory of history.

    Retelling, czyli ponowne opowiedzenie historii, w literaturze polskiej utrwalił się przede wszystkim w odniesieniu do mitów, legend, baśni, fantastyki oraz literatury postmodernistycznej. Tymczasem tezy z nim związane sprawdzają się na gruncie historiografii oraz historii alternatywnych, realizujących odmienny scenariusz dziejów. Relacja retellingu do tego typu literatury rzadko podlega analizie. W badaniach nad historiami alternatywnymi porusza się natomiast zagadnienia renarracji, intertekstualności, reinterpretacji oraz świata na opak, które bywają utożsamiane z retellingiem. Powyższym zagadnieniom poświęcony jest niniejszy artykuł.
    Retelling, or re-telling a story, has become established in Polish literature primarily in relation to myths, legends, fairy tales, fantasy and postmodern literature. Meanwhile, the theses related to it work well on the basis of historiography and alternative histories, implementing a different scenario of history. The relationship of retelling to this type of literature is rarely analysed. Then again, research on alternative histories deals with the issues of renarration, intertextuality, reinterpretation and the world upside down, which are sometimes equated with retelling. This article is devoted to the above-mentioned issues.

    The author of the article discusses an individual strategy of presenting the image of Dmitry Zhilunovich in the 20th century Belarusian literature (based on a documentary novel “Without an epitaph”). The picture is created by a system of artistic devices which depend on the features of the selected genres. Quotations of archival material, historians’ opinions, friends’ and relatives’ comments and memories built an elementary layer of the text of a documentary.

    Niniejszy esej stanowi zbiór podstawowych poglądów brytyjskiego filozofa Robina George’a Collingwooda na cele i zadania nauk historycznych. Zawiera krytykę ujmowania historii jako dyscypliny dążącej do ustanowienia ogólnych, rządzących biegiem dziejów, praw oraz jako dyscypliny zmierzającej do odkrycia, realizowanego w dziejach, boskiego planu. Jest on próbą wykazania różnic między historią a filozofią historii, sztuką i nauką. Wyraża pogląd, że nie istnieje coś takiego jak czysty fakt historyczny, że nie jesteśmy w stanie, w sposób absolutny, poznać jakiegokolwiek faktu historycznego, mimo że wiedza o nim zwiększa się, oraz że myślenie historyczne bazuje na percepcji. Konkluzją eseju jest myśl, że każdy historyk patrzy na przeszłość z własnego punktu widzenia, a więc źródła, z jakich korzysta, i wnioski, do jakich dochodzi, będą się znacząco różniły od źródeł i wniosków innych historyków, oraz myśl, że każde wydarzenie historyczne jest niewyczerpalne w tym sensie, że w rękach każdego nowego historyka przybiera inny kształt.
    This essay is a set of Robin George Collingwood’s basic reflections on the objectives and tasks of the historical sciences. It contains the critic of history as a discipline that aims at establishing general laws, which rule the course of history, and as a discipline that aims at discovering a divine plan, which is realizing itself in history. It is an attempt to show the differences between history and the philosophy of history, art and science. It expresses the thought that there is no such thing as a pure historical fact, that absolute cognition of any historical fact is impossible, though the knowledge about it increases, and that historical thought is based on perception. The conclusion of this essay is twofold. First, it concludes that the idea that each historian looks at the past from his own point of view, therefore sources used by him, and inferences that he reaches, significantly differ from sources and inferences of other historians. Second, it concludes that the thought that any historical event is unexhausted, in the sense that, it takes another shape in the hands of every new historian.
