Opis:: For the teaching of history in schools to be effective, it must be useful for something – either in an intellectual sense (for a better understanding of the world) or in a practical sense (for various professions related to the humanities). The only purpose of teaching an “encyclopedia of facts” is that it is good to have a minimum of knowledge in every field. Teaching history to mark group identity is acceptable, as is any education in the field of national culture, provided it is not exclusive with regard to the heritage and achievements of others. As a history teacher, the author does not accept the teaching of history for the purpose of inculcating a sense of national pride. He would like the study of history to increase the intellectual abilities of students, and in effect, their wisdom.

Opis:: Tekst oparty jest na ogłoszeniach drobnych, zamieszczonych w dziennikach „Pionier”, „Słowo Polskie” i „Dziennik Zachodni”, ukazujących się na Dolnym i Górnym Śląsku w latach 1945– 1949, dotyczących zdrowia i chorób w tym okresie. Jest to źródło nadal rzadko wykorzystywane do badań nad postawami i zachowaniami społeczeństwa powojennego, choć jego masowy charakter doskonale się do tego nadaje. Small ads in 1945–1949 as an informant about health and diseases in SilesiaThe article is devoted to the subject of health and diseases in Silesia in 1945–1949 seen through the eyes of people. It was written on the basis of a seldom used historical source in the form of small advertisements published in the three Silesian dailies: Pionier, Słowo Polskie, and Dziennik Zachodni, which had the largest number of small advertisements and were the most popular source of information. This type of historical source makes it possible to gain valuable additional information about physicians, places of their practice, ways in which people dealt with diseases in the first extremely difficult years after the war. At the same time it gives the possibility to answer many questions and offers information that cannot be found anywhere in documents issued by the local or state administration.

Opis:: The Christian Life Community is the successor of the Sodality of Our Lady. The Christian Life Community today is mostly made up of adults. They are formed spiritually and morally. This formation had already existed since the beginning in the Sodality of Our Lady, that is since the foundation of the first Sodality of Our Lady by the Jesuit John Leunis in 1563 at the Collegium Romanum. The adults who co-created the Sodality of Our Lady until the 18th century were kings, aristocrats, bishops, nobles, townsmen, craftsmen, servants, but the presence of adults most fully developed after the reactivation of the Society of Jesus (1814). The indications presented in the Guide by the Jesuit Jan Rostworowski have shaped the characters and attitudes of the adult members of the Marian Sodalities for centuries.
Sukcesorką Sodalicji Mariańskiej jest Wspólnota Życia Chrześcijańskiego. Tworzą ją ludzie do rośli, którzy są formowani duchowo i moralnie. Taka formacja dokonywała się już w Sodalicjach Mariańskich, tj. od założenia przez jezuitę Jana Leunisa pierwszej Sodalicji w 1563 r. w Collegium Romanum. Wśród ludzi, którzy współtworzyli Sodalicję do XVIII w., byli królowie, arystokraci, biskupi, szlachta, mieszczanie, rzemieślnicy, słudzy, ale obecność dorosłych w szeregach Sodalicji najpełniej rozwinęła się dopiero po wskrzeszeniu w 1814 r. Towarzystwa Jezusowego. Wskazania zawarte w Przewodniku jezuity Jana Rostworowskiego kształtowały przez wieki charaktery i postawy dorosłych członków i członkiń Sodalicji Mariańskich.

Opis:: The article deals with the analysis of the artistic and the ideological assumptions of the constructing the literary image of the past in point of view of Henryk Sienkiewicz in connection with his polemic against Włodzimierz Spasowicz in the context of the discussion of the 19th-century about the values of historical novel. In the theoretical declarations the author pays major attention to the hypnotic charm of the past which he named „the brilliane of Milton’s paradise lost” and references to the great poetry of romanticism. In the writer;s programme intentions the literary works should presented the ideological versions of the myth of the Polish past during the period of national slavery. Sienkiewicz focuses on subjective experiences of his fictional heroes, connects existential and historical dimensions of human life, looking for semantic mechanisms of history. The analysis of the writer’s outlook on life concentrating on the universal questions like the sense of life, the essence of world, the human’s nature and the hierarchy of values. The article attempts to show that the absolute values existence depends on the memory of the past.

Opis:: Followers of methodological antinaturalism in philosophy, who criticise the application of methods representing the natural sciences to other realms of knowledge, argue for the necessity to separate the humanities from the empirical instrumentarium of research. The exposed dualism of investigation process reveals differences between axiomatic and deductive explanation of arguments of formal sciences and with the understanding of the humanistic interpretation and with idealizing historical and comparative analysis in the area of sciences concerning the spirit. An important contribution into historic analyses of the Geisteswissenschaften sphere came from a disciple of the Marburg Neo-Kantianism and follower of Kantian apriorism, Ernst Cassirer, and an author of the antipositivistic turn and the historical philosophy of life, Wilhelm Dilthey. Both philosophers enter into the polemics with naturalistic ideas of the man and the culture; they enter into polemic with a positivistic vision of the reality determined exclusively by physical and biological factors. In their own considerations they stress the irreducibility of the historical world to the dimension of nature. They underline the qualitative exceptionality of man as a conscious and creative (in cultural terms) individual. Taking as the point of departure the question of history, I will show dependences, collected at the perspective of the empirical (not metaphysical) ideas of the culture created by the selfconsciousness producing cultural meanings.

Opis:: In Norwid's works continuation is seen of the Romantic predilection for details, for concrete facts, but the poet moves them from the space of the outer world to the dimension of man's inner reality. The first generation Romantics approach history, for example, through a detail of the landscape. For Norwid history is a context for revealing the inner man (Kleopatra i Cezar). It also happens that history, like in Promethidion, appears in its entanglement in relations with art, beauty and work. In such a configuration the key character of conscience is revealed as a category in a special way connected with the flow of time, with history.

Opis:: W artykule przybliża się życie i działalność księży Macieja i Juliana Smoleńskich, powiązanych z autorem więzami genealogiczno‑przestrzennymi. Wskazuje się na ich drogę edukacyjną, duszpasterską oraz pasje badawcze i popularyzujące wiedzę religijną. Przypomina się, że ks. Maciej Smoleński ujawnił duże zainteresowanie dziejami kościołów na ziemi dobrzyńskiej. Zgromadził bogaty materiał faktograficzny o ich przeszłości i teraźniejszości, opublikował go w książce „Cztery kościoły w ziemi dobrzyńskiej”. W pracy podniósł ważne przesłania metodyczne, dotyczące dokumentowania wiedzy o współczesności. Ks. Julian Smoleński ujawnił podobne zainteresowanie, a w tym szczególny rozgłos przyniosła mu książka „100 mów pogrzebowych”. Kreśląc ogniwa działalności duszpasterskiej obu księży, wskazuje się na ich relacje rodzinne. Mieli oni braci, nad którymi sprawowali opiekę po śmierci ojca, a którzy stali się luminarzami polskiej nauki. Przykładowo Władysław Smoleński jest uznawany za luminarza świata intelektualnego epoki pozytywizmu, legitymował się bogatym dorobkiem badawczym dotyczącym dziejów Polski, przede wszystkim XVIII w. W analizie poznawczej wskazuje się na najważniejsze zasługi księży Smoleńskich oraz członków ich rodziny, jak też na świat wartości kulturowo‑cywilizacyjnych.
The lives and activities of two priests: Maciej and Julian Smoleńki are described in the paper, especially their education, priesthood and chaplainship, their research passion and work to popularize religious knowledge. Fr. Maciej Smoleński was especially interested in the history of the churches in the region of Dobrzyń. His most important book is “The history of the churches in the region of Dobrzyń”. His brother, fr. Julian Smoleński was also interested in history, but he made a name with the book “A hudred funeral orations”. Family relationships are also noticed. The priests had two brothers and, as their father died, they took care of them. One of the brothers – Władysław Smoleński – is recognised as one of the most important Polish intellectuals in the late XIX century.

Opis:: In the article, the topic of the medieval „discovering” of the market is discussed, with the references to the Paolo Prodis’ book Settimo non rubare. Furto e mercato nella storia dell’Occidente. The author of the book, following Harold Berman, finds the changes in the 11th and 12th century Church, as the decisive mile stones in the development of the civilization of Western Christianity. The mentioned „papal revolution” led to the historical distinction between the spiritual and the political sphere, and later, to the autonomy of economic one. Accordingly, the Italian historian rejects the thesis that Enlightenment was the new beginning in the European history. In the P. Prodi’s analysis, the Latin term forum plays the crucial role. The word signified the place, square, especially the place where court proceedings occurred. Therefore, in the later abstract sense forum signified criteria or rules of judgement: both in the juridical meaning (forum civile, f. canonico, f. consciantiae), and the economic one, in which forum meant exactly „the market”. The “discovering” of the market rules was a consequence the development of the theoretical reasoning about mercantile activity. It was essentially related to the concepts of the just price (iustum pretium) and the common estimation (communis aestimatio). According to P. Prodi the common character of the estimation was of essential importance, as well as the new version of the Roman rule Res tantum valet, quantum vendi potest, with the medevial addendum: scilicet communiter. The author criticised the view, that the process of defining of the market was mainly the result of reception of Aristotelian Ethics and Politics. He underlined that in the penitential handbooks of the 12th and 13th century the focus was significantly shifted from the vice of avarice to the commandment „You shall not steal”; moreover the significant violation of the rules of fair market exchange begun to be considered as a sin against this commandment. In the article, the significance of the application of the notion forum commune by Thomas Aquinas (in the treatise on credit sale) was underlined. The interconnection between the concept of the market and the idea of common good was expressed in the juxtaposition of terms: forum commune – bonum commune. M. W. Bukała observes that the thesis about the limited influence of Aristotelian thought on the examined issue can be additionally confirmed by the analysis of the Article on mercantile profit in Summa Theologiae by St. Thomas (II-II, q. 77, a. 4), where Aquinas distances himself from the Philosopher’s view. The P. Prodi discourses were amended by the significant distinction: not every violation of ethics of economic life was considered as the theft by the medieval moralists – e.g.: the determinatio of the casus of buying grain with the deferred delivery for an undercut price, in canon „Naviganti” (X 5.5.19, 2do), and in the related comments of the 13th century canonist, Clarus Florentinus. Moreover, the Jacques Le Goff’s critique of the Prodi’s approach was undermined.
