Opis:: The main goal of the paper is to discuss whether a contest, as an educational tool, can develop the creativity of participants when the main goal of the students may be to win. A 24HOURS contest was implemented as a case study. Three methods were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the 24HOURS contest: a written questionnaire, individual in-depth interviews, and an online questionnaire. Results proved that the contest was unsatisfactory in increasing students’ creativity, as they were oriented to win, or to acquire knowledge, rather than to cooperate or interact with representatives of other student teams. The investigation confirmed the tutors’ enabling responsibility for both cooperation and creativity during the contest. However, expectations of tutor engagement caused concern and their role should, therefore, have been more clearly defined. Analysis of the case study presented in this paper can provide pedagogues with insight into the design and implementation of contests as educational tools.

Opis:: The purpose of the research is to analyze the motivation and expectations of students from Ukraine with respect to higher education (HE) in the field of tourism. A survey questionnaire was created to be used by a target group in order to obtain their views. Research has shown that the main motive (60%) for studying in Poland was the desire to study and work at the same time. In reality HE students combined degree study and work in even more cases, and 58% of the work involved the tourism industry. Almost half of the students surveyed intend to remain in Poland following graduation. Those who expressed a desire to leave for other countries most often identified Spain and Germany. At the same time, most stated that they would like to work in professions associated with tourism including work in travel agencies and hotels.

Opis:: Social competences are one of the most important areas of an individual’s functioning in the surrounding environment. They are so important that, apart from knowledge and skills, they have become one of higher education’s outcomes. The level of social competence depends not only on the internal qualities of an individual but also on environmental factors. This article aims to present the findings of research concerning the level of social competences attained by students of tourism and recreation throughout their higher education and comprises quantitative and qualitative research methods. The results indicate that students show only average levels of social competence even though their academic teachers declare that education outcomes have been accomplished in this field.

Opis:: Cel badań. W artykule zaprezentowano problem kształcenia kadr w zakresie turystyki na poziomie studiów wyższych na wrocławskiej Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego. Celem artykułu jest wskazanie obszarów i kierunków działań zmierzających do udoskonalenia kształcenia na kierunku turystyka i rekreacja tak, aby w możliwie największym stopniu zaspokajało ono potrzeby i spełniało oczekiwania studentów. Materiał i metody. Aby zrealizować główny cel badawczy, zastosowano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego (technika ankiety audytoryjnej) oraz metodę analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa. W badaniach ankietowych wzięli udział studenci III roku I stopnia (97 osób) oraz II roku II stopnia (67 osób), kończący studia na Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego we Wrocławiu na kierunku turystyka i rekreacja. Wyniki i wnioski. Studenci dokonali oceny kształcenia na badanym kierunku m.in. w zakresie programu nauczania, organizacji studiów oraz infrastruktury uczelni. W efekcie autorki zidentyfikowały dwa obszary oraz sześć kierunków działań, których celem będzie udoskonalenie oferty kształcenia na analizowanym kierunku.
Background. The paper presents the issue of training professionals in tourism at the higher education level at the University School of Physical Education in Wrocław. The aim of the article is to identify areas and directions of activities to improve teaching in Tourism and Recreation in order to fulfil the needs and meet the expectations of students to the greatest possible degree. Material and methods. The method of literature analysis and critique, as well as the method of diagnostic survey (auditorium questionnaire technique) were used to achieve the main purpose of the research. Students of the third year of the first degree studies (97 persons) and of the second year of the second degree studies (67 persons), who would soon graduate from the University School of Physical Education in Wrocław, Tourism and Recreation specialisation, took part in the survey. Results and conclusions. The students evaluated the education process in the fields of, among others, the curriculum, study organization, and the University infrastructure. As a result, the authors identified two areas and six directions for improvement aimed at improving the educational offer within the analysed specialisation.

Opis:: The new understanding of geotourism includes not only the visits to abiotic nature objects but their broad cognition, from geological structure and history, through landforms development, environmental problems, nature protection, impact on economic growth of the region up to historical and cultural contexts. The aim of such broad attempt is to better understand the relationships between geological structure, landforms, land development, history, economics and culture (including the aesthetic impressions of visitors) of a geosite and region in which it is located. Such hollistic attempt generates the demand for a new type of specialist. His education should integrate the knowledge of the Earth and environmental sciences, tourism industry theory and practice, basics of economy, finances, law, history and cultural heritage of the region together with the abilities of interpersonal communication and transfer of knowledge in a way understandable for non-professionals. The authors present the history and recent practice of geotourism education at the Faculty of Geology, Geophysics and Environment Protection of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków.
