Opis:
The subject of replenishment of infrastructure in Nigerian public universities has been of great concern to stakeholders in the educational system. How to obtain an appropriate replenishment plan that would give the desired infrastructure for a university after a certain period of time is a long-standing problem. We attempt to find a solution to this problem from an engineering perspective based on optimal control theory. The revenue generated through the payment of school fees and the costs of investment in infrastructure are used to construct the objective function. The state variables are the amount budgeted for such an investment and the stock of infrastructure, while the rate of replenishment is used as the control variable. The problem is solved by utilising Pontryagin’s principle. The dynamics of the replenishment plan is illustrated with an example. The results show that there should be a steady increase in the amount budgeted, in order to attain the desired infrastructure.

The Author discusses the relevance of the university education model proposed by Wilhelm von Humboldt from the perspective of today’s universities. When discussing the concept developed by the Prussian education minister, the Author asks if today’s life offers room for the university education model based on the concept of partnership-based community of students and teachers who seek answers to all questions preoccupying contemporary researchers and do so in a free, unrestrained and disinterested manner. Under this model, the problem of applicability of knowledge is pushed to the background whereas interdisciplinary nature of intellectual quest and of new knowledge prevails.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie transformacji uniwersytetów od modelu klasycznego, przez uniwersytet przedsiębiorczy, do uniwersytetu - organizacji podporządkowanej wiedzy. Pierwsza część zawiera rys historyczny, który jest, zdaniem Autora, bardzo istotny, gdyż pozwala uzmysłowić sobie złożoność czynników mających wpływ na kierunki ewolucji współczesnych uczelni. W drugiej części, odnoszącej się do przyszłości uniwersytetu, Autor przedstawia model uniwersytetu przedsiębiorczego Burtona Clarka, wskazując na zagrożenia we wdrożeniu tej ciekawej idei. W części trzeciej podejmuje próbę opisu cech współczesnego uniwersytetu jako organizacji podporządkowanej wiedzy. Autor stara się wykazać, że uniwersytet przyszłości będzie podlegał istotnym zmianom w zakresie organizacji, kultury organizacyjnej oraz technologii, których wprowadzenie będzie wymagało podejmowania trudnych decyzji i, jak się wydaje, czasu.
The article aims at presenting the transformation of universities from the classic model through the entrepreneurial university to a knowledge-based organisation. The first part introduces the historical background which is crucial in Author’s opinion as it allows the reader to realise the complexity of factors which shaped the evolution of modern universities. In the second part, looking into the future of universities, the Author discusses Burton R. Clark’s model of entrepreneurial university, identifying threats in implementation of this interesting concept. The third part describes the modern university as a knowledge-based organisation. The Author attempts to demonstrate that the university of the future will undergo significant changes in terms of organisation, organisational culture and technologies which will call for difficult decisions and, most likely, sufficient time to implement.

The paper, by the example of training for the railway industry in Uzbekistan, focuses on the experiences and characteristics of Uzbekistan's integration into the international system of education, a framework of qualifications of the European Commission. Tashkent Institute of Railway Engineering has: rated the students' knowledge of the possibility of mutual recognition and accreditation based on the comparability of disciplines and curricula; included in its institutional strategy doctoral program, which has national features aimed at providing career opportunities for young researchers and university teachers based on the fundamental nature and the humanization of education, providing the preparation of the highly qualified specialists, ensures the interconnection and interdependence at all levels of technical education: secondary, undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and post-graduate training and re-training to maintain the knowledge and skills of teachers at the level of requests engineering and production of the XXI century.
Статья, на примере подготовки кадров для железнодорожной отрасли в Узбекистане, посвящена опыту и характеристикам интеграции Узбекистана в международную систему образования, в структуру квалификаций Европейской комиссии. Ташкентский институт инженеров железнодорожного транспорта проводит: оценку знаний студентов для возможности взаимного признания и аккредитации на основе сопоставимости дисциплин и учебных программ; в его институциональную стратегию включена докторская программа, которая имеет национальные особенности, направленные на обеспечение возможности карьерного роста для молодых исследователей и преподавателей ВУЗов на основе фундаментального характера и гуманизации образования, обеспечивающая подготовку высококвалифицированных специалистов, обеспечивающая взаимосвязь и взаимозависимость всех уровней технического образования: среднего, студентов, аспирантов, докторантов и слушателей курсов подготовки и переподготовки подготовки для поддержания знаний и навыков преподавателей на уровне запросов проектирования и производства XXI века.

The phenomenon of parentocracy, which is more and more common in the current conditions of general education in higher schools, is also discussed.

The importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in nowadays business reality is constantly growing thanks to many factors, including the important promotional effort at all possible authorities levels and increasing educational effort of universities and in particular of business schools. Since there is no commonly accepted guideline/curriculum/content of social responsibility (SR) education, business schools at higher education institutions (HEIs) start to develop their own approaches on SR education.This paper aims to present the general background of CSR education with particular emphasis on its enhancements existing in EU and other countries or continents. Its ambition is also to offer a picture of CSR related educational activities launched by Polish HEIs and to present its evaluation by students. The first goal will be accomplished with the literature study and the review of initiatives publicly disclosed by the authorities, NGOs and finally by HEIs themselves. The second ambition will be completed with the outcomes of the survey conducted by the author in Gdańsk University of Technology (GUT), Faculty of Management and Economics (FME). The conclusions of this work allow to propose recommendations to be implemented in the SR education in the future.

This text is a contribution to the discussion on the reform of higher education in Poland. By referring to selected examples, it shows that the planned changes are based on several fundamental myths resulting from the inefficiency of earlier attempts to heal the university system. At the same time, it aims to show why it is necessary to abandon the belief that higher education can be reformed quickly, with little financial outlays, and that the results of the implemented changes can be instant. The text offers also a criticism of the view assuming that the expected changes can be arrived at only through a reform of the law, and that it is possible to transplant solutions functioning in other countries directly to Poland. The presented considerations oppose the position according to which there exist some ideal models of education and research, whose implementation can make it possible to “breed” an ideal scholar. Arguing that education and academic success will always be an outcome of many variables, a critical analysis of selected solutions included in the law on science and higher education has been offered as well.

Due to the changes taking place in the socio-economic sphere, including the expectations of members of the society, the idea of social responsibility is increasingly implemented at universities, including public ones. Therefore, the article is the result of the analysis to answer three questions: why can we talk about the social responsibility of the university, what this responsibility is and what types of activities are undertaken by selected public universities in Poland in accordance with conditions previously defined social responsibility. To achieve this goal, in-depth literature studies, analysis of the content of websites of universities, semi-structured and in-depth interviews with employees of selected public universities were conducted.

Corporatizing university is among the typical strategic of higher education (HE) management that enables developed countries to successfully position their universities among the best ones in the world. In Indonesia, the varying quality of universities is influenced by several factors: limited funding, inadequate facilities, meager quality of lecturers and researchers, inefficient management, and ineffective use of public spending. Teese emerged as symptoms that point to a deep-seated obstacle faced by Indonesian universities, i.e., an inappropriate university management and financing model. This study attempted to reveal the essential problem underlying the symptoms and share some thoughts of how to resolve them. It is concluded that corporatizing university in the country is considered among the most effective strategies to establish world-class universities in the archipelago.

Aim. The purpose of the study is to research the career of Professor Ioannikii Malynovskyi in higher education, his contribution to its development, the goals of the university education. Methods. In the study several different methods were used in the system and interaction. A dialectical method, which boils down to the fact that all phenomena in society have a beginning and an end. The historical method was used to take into account historical traditions, socio-cultural roots of the state and law. A logical-semantic method was also used to help define the conceptual apparatus used in the study. Formal-legal method was used to analyse and disclose legal concepts. Results. The research showed that Malynovskyi conducted scientific researches in the chosen field and by getting acquainted with the heritage of national and world culture. The professor made considerable efforts in education to democratise higher education, in particular, by admitting women to higher education in Western Siberia. He defined the goals of university teaching: 1) to learn to acquire knowledge, the method of scientific research and, 2) to get acquainted with the current state of science. The scientist was the first to create a chronologically consistent, comprehensive subject course on the history of Rus’ law. Conclusions. Malynovskyi’s contribution to the democratisation of higher education already belongs to history, but his scientifically based recommendations on the goals of university education and means of achieving it are not without relevance today, but especially on the practical side in training future legal practitioners  which are topical for today.

Studies about the transition to university emphasise the importance of the process of adaptation in the first year as a determining persistence factor. This article presents the results of the focus groups held with students of two undergraduate degree programmes, Pedagogy and Business Management and Administration, at the Universityof Barcelona(Catalonia, Spain) that dealt with the more significant situations they experienced in the process of adapting to life at university. The results are based on the five main tasks in the process of transition to university: starting and developing new social relationships; adjusting expectations about the university and degree programme; adapting to new academic codes at university; coping with academic/exam results; and construction of the university identity. These five tasks are identified in three moments in the initial period of adaptation. This study forms part of a Research+Development project.

Universities are now faced with a huge challenge. They need to see the change in society and due to this, they must change themselves. United Nations Environment Programme might be helpful in this process. The implementation process is difficult as many people are involved. The understanding of the process and of its necessity must be shared by every member of a particular institution. The term ‘sustainable development’, even if used so commonly, may be understood differently, so further research is suggested on clarifying the term. Due to its popularity, many universities are now involved in many activities like signing a declaration of sustainable development or other initiatives. For some of those institutions, it is an apparent action that is not followed by any action later. The goals itself are very useful for higher education institutions as they play a role of a road map on the way to establishing strong and living links with the society as such, represented by stakeholders.

The aim of the study was to decode images of universities located in Wrocław on the basis of the city’s official narrative. The corpus, consisting of 180 media statements, was acquired from the portal www.wroclaw.pl. The chronological scope covered the academic year 2019/2020. The criterion for the selection of research material was the occurrence of the word “university” in the text. One of the analysis subjects was the number of mentions concerning each of the universities and the values attributed to them, the style and context of the texts, the events that were described and the people speaking on behalf of the universities. Another important element of the research was an analysis of genre press photographs, during which reference was made to the typology by Joanna Szylko-Kwas. It was decided to expand the typology to include photo-instruction—a genre appropriate for the relationship between a headline with a directive function and a photograph with an illustrative function. The results of the analysis made it possible to recreate media images of all the universities in Wrocław that emerged from the official narrative of the city. The information and reporting style was dominant in the texts and the headlines mostly had descriptive functions, while the photographs had illustrative functions.
