    Internationalization is an inevitable phenomenon among all contemporary higher education institutions (HEIs) in a globalizing world. It is the driving force for development and progress. In course of the last 30 years, it became an inevitable element of HE management. However, it carries along a number of risks, pitfalls, and organizational challenges. To hedge those, quality assurance (QA) is called to the stage. HEIs therefore need not only to search for chances but also to increase the advancement of methods to safeguard the quality of education and research. It is for this reason that a discussion on the mutual evolution and impact of internationalization and QA is required, and this is the aim of this article to combine the issues dialectically. There are tools and institutions within the internationally and nationally developed QA concepts that have the potential and aim to secure the benefits of internationalization.

    The scientific goal of the paper is to present the issue of the development of internationalization “abroad” in Polish and Ukrainian higher education.The leading research method is a comparative method, specifically the method of international comparison. The authors focus on the national and institutional level comparison of the development of internationalization "abroad" in Polish and Ukrainian higher education systems. In addition to the comparative method, the authors applied the method of secondary research (desk research), the method of description and analysis and critique of the scientific literature. By using the source materials and indicated numerical data, it is possible to verify the thesis.The process of reasoning in the article was conducted in the following stages. First, the definition of internalization in higher education was given with respect to Polish and Ukrainian approach. Next, the stages in the development of internationalization “abroad” in Polish and Ukrainian higher education were featured. Afterwards, the development process of internationalization was presented on the background of processes occurring in the European Higher Education Area. The paper ends with conclusions.The conclusions drawn in the paper allowed to verify the thesis. In both countries, Poland and Ukraine, the diversity of activities in frame of internationalization "abroad” occur. Among these activities mobility of students and academic teachers remain the most visible in Poland as well as in Ukraine. The development of internationalization "abroad" in relation to mobility of projects, programmes and providers seems to be more advanced in Poland.

    Przy użyciu nowych danych, w kontekście aktualnych tendencji, poddano analizie zjawisko umiędzynarodowienia szkolnictwa wyższego na Ukrainie pod kątem mobilności studentów i współpracy międzynarodowej, wskazując przede wszystkim na jego asymetrię. Polska, Niemcy i Rosja są priorytetowymi krajami dla ukraińskich studentów podejmujących studia wyższe za granicą (70% ukraińskich studentów uczy się w tych krajach). Polska stała się kluczową destynacją niedawno, a liczba studentów z Ukrainy gwałtownie wzrasta (ponad 33%). Największe grupy studentów zagranicznych na Ukrainie pochodzą z Azerbejdżanu, Turkmenistanu, Indii, Nigerii i Maroka (52%), podczas gdy jest tylko 8,1% studentów z krajów OECD, 2,9% z UE, 0,9% z G7 i prawie 14% z państw sąsiadujących. Gruzja zastąpiła Rosję wśród 10 głównych państw dostarczających studentów na Ukrainę. Całkowite poziomy eksportu i importu w szkolnictwie wyższym mierzone mobilnością studentów na Ukrainie są mniejsze w obu przypadkach niż 4/5%. Można również zauważyć zasadniczą dysproporcję w regionalizacji umiędzynarodowienia edukacji wyższej poprzez przypływ studentów na korzyść wschodnich i południowych części Ukrainy. Ogólny kontekst nauki języków obcych studentów międzynarodowych zmienił się ostatnio z dominacji rosyjskiego (57%) na dominację języka ukraińskiego (49%). Potwierdza się także wzrastająca tendencja do rozszerzania współpracy, w kontekście Europejskich Obszarów Szkolnictwa Wyższego i Badań, UE i państw partnerskich w obrębie programów Erasmus+ oraz Horizon 2020. Ostatnia modernizacja legislacyjna dotycząca szkolnictwa wyższego wzmacnia jego internacjonalizację na Ukrainie.
    What is analysed with the use of new data, some peculiarities and trends is the internationalization of Ukrainian higher education (HE) with regard to academic mobility and cooperation. The asymmetry between the outgoing and incoming internationalization in HE is reveled. Poland, German, and Russia are priority destinations for HE abroad (70% Ukrainian students abroad study in these countries). Poland has become a key destination recently and the number of Ukrainian students there is increasing rapidly (33% and more). The biggest groups of international students in Ukraine are from Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, India, Nigeria, Morocco (52%). At the same time, there are 8.1% of students from OECD, from the EU – 2.9%, G7 – 0.9%, and from the neighboring countries – nearly 14%. Georgia replaced Russia among the top 10 countries supplying students to Ukraine. The total levels of exporting/importing HE measured by student mobility in Ukraine are smaller than 4/5% in both cases. There is an essential regional disproportion of internationalization of HE by incoming students in favor of Eastern and Southern parts of Ukraine. The overall language learning context for international students has changed from Russian (57%) to Ukrainian (49%) domination lately. The inreasing trend of broadening cooperation in the context of European Higher Education and Research Areas of the EU and partner countries through Erasmus+ and Horizon 2020 programmes is confirmed. The recent modernization of the legislation concerning HE enhances the internationalization of HE in Ukraine.     The article concerns the development of internationalization of higher education in China. The paper describes the historical development of higher education and the development of internationalization of higher education, recalling the most important facts. The author points out that the first forms of internationalization took the form of student and scientific international exchanges, and over time, along with the introduction of the country's economic development strategy, the country focus on creating strategic mergers, alliances and international cooperation, which are regulated directly by the PRC (e.g. OBOR) or are transnational (e.g. BRICS), where the Chinese state plays one of the main role. The article is based on the analysis of existing research by Chinese researchers, where the analytical perspective of a researcher from a different culture, participating in the process of internationalization of higher education in the world, is presented.

    Purpose: This article addresses selected aspects of internationalization of higher education (HE) in Poland in the context of demographic changes. The purpose of it is to analyze the dynamics of the number of foreign students studying at Polish Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and their structure by type of HEI, field of study and origin. Design/methodology/approach: A review of the literature on the subject and desk research with reference to data from the Statistics Poland were used. The analysis, covered the years 2004-2020, was based on selected methods of descriptive statistics. Findings: Between 2004 and 2020, the number of foreign students increased almost 10-fold. The average growth rate in the analyzed time series was 15.2% for the group of HEIs and 21.5% for non-public HEIs. The choices of foreign students most often group fields of study in the areas of social sciences, economy and medicine. There has been an increase in interest in studies in technology and services, while there has been a marked decline in fields of study related to the humanities and education. Research limitations/implications: The demographic perspective adds a new dimension to the issues of growth and development of HEIs, that is why this issue involves further in-depth analysis. Practical implications: Despite the apparent positive change with regard to the number of student-foreigners studying at Polish HEIs, this statistic, compared to other European countries, is still unsatisfactory. In the face of projected further unfavorable demographic trends, countries with positive natural increase and younger age structures, become an opportunity to compensate for the loss of Polish students. Efforts by the entire HE sector are needed to seize these opportunities. It is necessary to further correlate sectoral policies - HE with population, foreign and social policies. HEIs should improve processes related to caring for the broader relationship with foreign students. Originality/value: The paper is addressed to all interested in HE policy. The study should be seen as a contribution to the existing discussion in the issue of growth and development of HEIs.

    Jednym z podstawowych wyzwań polskiego szkolnictwa wyższego jest intensyfikacja aktywności międzynarodowej we wszystkich obszarach działalności. Wymaga to poszukiwania nowych form kształcenia, sposobów nawiązywania kontaktów umożliwiających trwałe funkcjonowanie w międzynarodowych sieciach akademickich. W pracy przedstawiono przesłanki i uwarunkowania innowacyjności w szkolnictwie wyższym, w kontekście możliwości wspierania procesów umiędzynarodowienia. Podkreślono rolę technologii informacyjno-komunikacyjnych w rozwoju innowacyjnych form umiędzynarodowionego kształcenia, takich jak mobilność wirtualna, otwarta edukacja.
    One of the basic challenges of Polish higher education is the intensification of international activity in all areas of activity. This requires searching for new forms of education, ways of establishing contacts enabling permanent functioning in international academic networks. The paper presents the reasons and determinants of innovation in higher education in the context of the possibility of supporting internationalization processes. The role of information and communication technologies in the development of innovative forms of internationalized education, such as virtual mobility and open education, was emphasized.

    This study focuses on the effect that internationalization of higher education has on the nation branding of South Korea. To better understand the role that international students in higher education play in nation branding, research is needed on the actual experiences of international students in the country. In this study, current and former African university students’ experiences living and studying in South Korea are investigated. This study, therefore, uses the nation branding framework within the context of South Korea and the role of higher education as an image enhancement strategy geared toward global public inclusion; its focus is on the experiences of African students. In order to obtain multiple perspectives on African student experiences, a survey was conducted using a questionnaire. The empirical evidence obtained in this study demonstrates that African students’ experiences in South Korea are relevant in their perceptions of the host country. The results suggest the positive impact that the South Korean government has on improving the country’s image through encouragement of internationalization of higher education, especially among African students who come to the country for their tertiary education.

    Przedmiotem artykuły są reformy polskiego szkolnictwa wyższego w okresie 2007-2012 (tzw. Reformy Kudryckiej) i próba odpowiedzi na pytanie o to, jaki wpływ na ich kierunek oraz dynamikę zachodzących zmian miał proces jego internacjonalizacji. W wymiarze teoretycznym artykuł czerpie inspiracje z koncepcji de-nacjonalizacji szkolnictwa wyższego Ulricha Teichlera, który wskazuje na poszerzenie kontekstu jego funkcjonowania, a tym samym wzrost znaczenia zjawisk i procesów zachodzących w przestrzeni transnarodowej na definiowanie kierunku reform oraz ich legitymizację w nowoczesnych państwach narodowych. Analiza koncentruje się wyłącznie na Polsce, reprezentującej bardziej ogólny przypadek kraju, który (a) dynamicznie się rozwija w wymiarze politycznym oraz gospodarczym, (b) otwiera się szeroko na globalne procesy społeczne, a jednocześnie ten, (c) w którym władza publiczna przez lata była niezdolna/zbyt politycznie słaba do samodzielnego inicjowania zmian w obszarze nauki oraz szkolnictwie wyższym.
    This paper elaborates on the higher education (HE) reforms in Poland undertaken between 2007– –2012 (The reforms of Kudrycka). In doing so it attempts to address the question: What has been the impact of the internationalization of HE on the dynamics and directions of the reforming agenda? The paper alludes to Urlich Teichler’s concept of de-nationalization, which highlights the growing importance of transnational processes in setting domestic policy agendas in HE in modern nation states. The analysis is focused on Poland, which represents the more general case of a country that: (a) is dynamically developing in political and economic terms; (b) is opening up to transnational processes; but also (c) provides an example of a country that for years – due to lack of resources and political authority – failed to undertake serious political steps to reform higher education. The analysis claims that internationalization has been one of the most important impulses to not only implement major changes in Polish higher education, but also has been a vital source of the legitimacy of initiatives highly unpopular among Polish academics.

    The purpose of this paper is to review the changes that occur in the perception and functions of higher education institutions in the world in relation to the processes of globalization. Based on scientific publications and the information provided by the organizations/initiatives supporting development of internationalization, the impact of commercialization, technological progress and economic development on the shape of educational services market has been discussed. Tough competition between the U.S., the UK and Australia place them as the most popular study destinations, setting trends in the industry at the same time, with an estimated value of 43 billion dollars. The determinants of their success are illustrated, as well as the actions taken by the countries which aspire to join the global race for the student. Technological advancement has changed the way students access information. Information no longer lies within the boundaries of the university, instead the world-wide-web allows them to operate on a much more competitive platform. Moreover, an access to European funds has enabled the development of academic mobility on an unprecedented scale, contributing to deepening and widening cooperation on an institutional level.

    Przystąpienie Polski do Unii Europejskiej w 2004 r. jest bez wątpienia jednym z głównych czynników zmian w sektorze nauki i szkolnictwa wyższego w naszym kraju w ostatnich latach. W szczególności dotyczy to międzynarodowych aspektów działalności szkół wyższych i placówek badawczych. Niemniej istotne wydają się korzyści infrastrukturalne w postaci dofinansowania ze środków europejskich budowy i modernizacji budynków uczelnianych, wyposażenia laboratoriów itd.Celem niniejszego artykułu jest próba wskazania i oceny wpływu członkostwa w Unii Europejskiej na sytuację i umiędzynarodowienie nauki i szkolnictwa wyższego w Poznaniu. W artykule podjęto analizę czterech wymiarów działalności naukowej i edukacyjnej, którymi były kolejno: (1) międzynarodowa aktywność publikacyjna – publikacje w najbardziej renomowanych czasopismach, (2) międzynarodowa współpraca naukowa w ramach Programów Ramowych Unii Europejskiej, (3) projekty realizowane przez jednostki naukowe oraz uczelnie wyższe w ramach programów operacyjnych oraz (4) umiędzynarodowienie procesu edukacyjnego na uczelniach. Sytuację nauki i szkolnictwa wyższego Poznania porównano z sytuacją w innych największych miastach Polski. Przeprowadzone badania wykazały, że w przypadku każdej z analizowanych sfer można wskazać na korzyści płynące z członkostwa w Unii Europejskiej dla nauki i szkolnictwa wyższego w Poznaniu.
    Accession to the European Union in 2004 was undoubtedly one of the main drivers of change in science and higher education in Poland in recent years. This applies in particular to the international aspects of higher education and research institutions. Infrastructural benefits, in the form of EU funding for the construction and modernization of university buildings, laboratory equipment, etc., seem equally important.This paper attempts to identify and assess the impact of EU membership on the situation and internationalization of science and higher education in Poznan. To this end, the paper includes analyses of four dimensions of scientific and educational activity: (1) international publishing activity – publications in the most prestigious journals, (2) international scientific cooperation under the European Union Framework Programmes (3) projects implemented by scientific institutions and universities under operational programs, and (4) internationalization of education process at universities. For comparison purposes, the state of science and higher education in Poznan has been compared to the situation in other major Polish cities. The study conducted showed that for each of the spheres analysed the benefits can be identified of EU membership for science and higher education in Poznan.
