Opis:
This study investigated the relationship of morphological and molecular genetic distance with hybrid performance and heterosis in cucumber in an attempt to make use of genetic distance in predicting hybrid performance. The results of this study showed that GD, in general, correlated poorly with heterosis and SCA. Results showed that the mean values of the hybrids were significantly larger or smaller for many traits when compared with the mean of parental lines, indicating that heterosis was present for these traits. In next step we compare inter group hybrids versus intra group hybrids. This test showed that intra group hybridization although increased the yield and yield component but decrease some fruit quality such as fruit color and shape.

Opis:
Half F2 diallel crosses of spring rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) varieties along with their parents were evalu- ated for plant height, first siliqua height, siliquae on main axis, siliquae per plant, 1000-seed weight and seed yield. The Analysis of variance based on Cockerham’s method revealed significant mean squares of general combining ability (GCA), specific combining ability (SCA) for all the traits indicating that both additive and non-additive genetic effects were involved in controlling these traits. Parent vs crosses mean square which is indicating average heterosis was significant for all the traits. In Hayman’s method the regression lines esti- mated for all the traits except plant height cut the Wr axis below the origin in the negative zone, suggesting the overdominance type of gene action for these traits except plant height. Based on the array points on the regression lines, 19H had maximum dominant genes for siliquae on main axis, siliquae per plant 1000-seed weight and seed yield, being closest to the origin, while Option500 possessed recessive genes for first siliqua height, siliquae per plant and 1000-seed weight, as evidenced by its distant position from the origin. Due to low narrow-sense heritability estimates for most of the traits, selection for improving these traits should be carried out in delayed segregating generations.

Opis:
Although most of investigations showed that nitrogen fertilizers gave substantial rapeseed yield increases even in diverse and contradicting conditions but in a few studies were focused on genetic parameters of nitrogen stress effects. Combining ability of some of important grain yield stress indices based on application and non application of nitrogen (N+ and N0) was studied using half diallel of six spring rapeseed varieties and their 15 F2 progenies. Significant mean squares of general and specific combining abilities (GCA and SCA) were observed for potential yield(Yp), Stress yield(Ys), mean productivity (MP), geometric mean productivity (GMP), tolerance index (TOL), stress tolerance index (STI) and stress susceptibility index (SSI), indicating importance of additive and non-additive genetic effects for them. Non significant ratio of GCA to SCA mean square and low narrow-sense heritability estimates were detected for all the indices, indicating the prime importance of non-additive genetic effects. Significant positive GCA effect of Yp, Ys, MP, GMP and STI for PF7045/91 and significant negative GCA effects of them for Option500, indicated the same direction of GCA effects of these indices and GCA effects of Yp and Ys. On compare to SCA effects, most of crosses had significant high parent heterosis for Yp, Ys and and all the stress indices, therefore selection the better combinations based on heterosis will be more effective than SCA effect.

Opis:
Combining ability analysis and heterosis for cotton fiber quality traits were studied in a set of diallel crosses involving eight cotton (Gossypium sp.) genotypes. Randomized complete block design was used to test 56 F1 and 8 parents for fiber quality traits; length (Len), strength (Str), micronaire (Mic), uniformity (Unf), elongation (Elg), spinning consistency index (Sci) and short fiber index (Sfi). Analysis revealed significant general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects for all the traits and additive gene effects were important in the inheritance of the traits. Giza-45 had the highest GCA effects for Len, Sci, Unf and Elg while Is-4 had the highest Str value. Mic and Sfi values were lowest for Askabat-100 and Giza-45, respectively. The cross Cukurova-1518 × 108-F and Nazilli-84S × Askabat-100 had the lowest SCA effects for Mic and Sfi, respectively. The highest values for Len (Askabat-100 × 108-F), for Str (Acala Prema × 108-F), for Sci (Is-4 × Giza-45), for Unf (Stoneville-453 × Askabat-100) and for Elg (108-F × Is-4) were also obtained. Hybridizations among Askabat-100 × Nazilli-84S, Is-4 × Giza-45, Askabat-100 × Stoneville-453, Askabat-100 × Giza-45, Is-4 × 108F, Giza-45 × 108F, Giza-45 × Acala Prema, Nazilli-84S × Giza-45, Is-4 × Nazilli-84S and Acala Prema × Askabat-100 crosses yielded the best heterosis and heterobeltiosis values. Aforementioned parents and crosses could be utilized for further selection of high fiber quality and applying 3-way crosses or modified backcross or recurrent selection to genotypes having good combining ability would improve fiber quality...

Opis:
In rabi season 2012, six diversed maize inbred lines were crossed in all possible combinations without reciprocals by using a half diallel mating design to obtain 15 single cross. Inbred parents and their F1 single crosses with a check were evaluated in rabi season 2013 to evaluate the role of general and specific combin-ing ability and heterosis for some quantitative traits. Significant general combining ability variances was observed only for cob height and specific combining ability variances were observed for plant height, cob height, cob length, cob girth, number of kernels per cob, cob weight and hundred grain weight. The GCA/SCA ratio was less than unity for all studied traits except shelling percentage; this means that these traits are pre-dominantly controlled by non-additive gene action. Based on GCA estimates, it could be concluded that the best combiners were ML01, ML05 and ML29 inbred lines for most of the studied traits. This result indi-cated that these inbred lines could be considered as good combiners for improving these traits. Significant positive SCA effects were found for all studied traits except number of kernels per row and shelling percent-age. Based on SCA effects, it could be concluded that the crosses ML01×ML02, ML02×ML05, ML02×ML29 and ML05×ML15 could be exploited by the maize breeders to increase maize yield. Three F1 hybrids such as ML02×ML15, ML02×ML29 and ML05×ML15 proved to be the outstanding hybrids to immediate further steps for commercial cultivation. In a conclusive decision the F1 hybrid, ML02×ML29 was the best combina-tion as evaluated through combining ability and standard heterosis.
