Opis:
Adsorption isotherms and kinetics of the removal of heavy metal ions (Ni, Pb, Zn) from aqueous solutions by natural adsorbents (zeolite, bentonite, clay) were investigated in a lab-scale batch study. The effect of various parameters such as adsorbent dosage, initial concentration of heavy metal ions, temperature, and agitation time were studied to optimise the conditions. Under those optimized conditions (180 rpm agitation rate, 120 min agitation time, pH 4.0, 298 K, 100 mg/dm3 initial adsorbate concentration), the removal percentages of heavy metal ions for natural adsorbents have been determined. The adsorption mechanisms and characteristic parameters of the process were analyzed by two and three parameter isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Redlich-Peterson, Toth and Sips), and kinetic models (Lagergren's pseudo-first order, Ho and McKay's pseudo-second order). Adsorption thermodynamics of heavy metal ions (changes of standard enthalpy, entropy and free energy) on zeolite, bentonite and clay were also studied at 298,318 and 338 K.

The article presents the results of preliminary tests obtained from the analysis of ash coming from the combustion of various types of waste in household furnaces. The aim of this work was to examine the influence of various types of waste burned in household furnaces on the elemental composition of the generated ash. As part of the research, analyses of ash generated from the incineration of mixed waste, plastics, wood, textiles, rubber waste and paper were made. The content of selected metal ions: Mn, Cu, Mo, Zn, Cd, Tl, Cr, Co, Ni, As, Sn, Sb, Pb, V was determined in the tested samples, according to PN-EN ISO 17294-2: 2016-11 standard. The highest concentrations of zinc were found in the large-sized waste, rubber and textile ash samples and highest concentrations of copper were found in the plastic and paper ash samples. The highest concentrations for elements such as copper, lead, cobalt and chromium were recorded for samples of rubber and large-sized waste containing e.g. varnished furniture boards. The obtained results showed that depending on the waste incinerated, the content of selected metals was significantly different, and the highest concentrations were noted for samples of large-sized waste, waste from segregated plastics and waste from rubbers.

Despite limiting the transport emitted pollution, contamination of the roadside environment remains an important issue. Due to necessity to decrease the lead emission, catalytic converters modifications were introduced. It caused increase of Platinum Group Elements (PGEs) emission, which was rare in the environment before. So far there is lack of information about platinum contamination to functioning of plants which are so important in the urban environment. In the experiment garden cress (Lepidium sativum) were sown into Petri dishes filled with filter paper soaked with solutions of different platinum concentration. There were used two compounds containing platinum at different oxidation states PtCl4 - ssolutions containing 0.58, 2.89, 5.79, 11.58 and 23.16 mg Pt4+•dm−3 and [Pt(NH3)4] (NO3)2 - solutions containing 0.50, 2.52, 5.04, 10.08 and 20.15 mg Pt2+•dm−3 in every combination of the experiment. In every combination there were five Petri dishes, experiment was repeated twice. To estimate plant response to stress factor, phenolic compounds contents were analyzed in the roots and shoots parts separately. The highest amount of total phenolics in roots was recorded in plants treated with highest Pt4+ dose which was 23.16 mg•dm−3, seeds treated with other doses of platinum (including those treated with highest dose of Pt2+ did not differ significantly from control plants. In the case of phenolic compounds in the aboveground parts of seedlings there was highest accumulation than in roots. Highest amounts of phenolics were recorded in plants also treated with Pt4+ in doses 11.58 and 23.16 mg•dm−3.

Salix americana willow bark is a waste arising in the process of wicker decortication that so far has not found Any practical application. The bark can adsorb metal ions, because in its composition among others are phenolic groups which may be involved in the removal of metal ions from water solutions. The results of sorption of copper(II) and zinc(II) on modifi ed willow bark of Salix americana were presented. The bark was modifi ed with nitric and sulfuric acids at concentrations ranging from 5 to 15%. The best adsorption results were obtained using 15% nitric acid for modifi cation. Adsorption of metal ions from aqueous solutions at concentrations raging from 20 to 100 mg/dm3 was studied. It was found that an increase in the initial concentration of copper(II) and zinc(II) resulted in an increase in their adsorption on the modifi ed cortex.

Opis:
Many industries, especially mining and metallurgy, deal with solutions containing ions. In some cases, these metal ions need to be concentrated and recovered from solutions and sometimes removed from wastewater. The ion flotation method has been applied for wastewater and water treatment, recovery of precious and platinum group metals, preconcentrating of rare earth elements, selective separation of multicomponent ions from dilute solutions, and analytical chemistry. It has been employed to separate heavy metals from a liquid phase using bubble attachment, originated in mineral processing. In these cases, ion flotation has an important place among other methods because it is a cheap and practical method. In this study, many ion flotation studies, especially applied at laboratory scale, were reviewed. This method gives very successful and promising results in removing heavy metals with toxic effects from wastewater and selective separation of metal ions from very low concentrated solutions. Ion flotation may take place in industrial scale operations with the new developments in flotation machines and collectors with better selectivity, high efficiency, lower cost, and environmental friendliness.

Opis:
Pomace from apples, grapes, blackcurrants, and oranges is a waste product of fruit processing, which is formed during the production of juices. Pomace is a rich source of biologically active compounds such as polyphenols, carotenoids, or vitamins. They also contain pectin, cellulose, lignin, proteins, and minerals. All these components, apart from having many beneficial properties for human health, also show sorption properties towards heavy metal ions. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the possibility of removing lead (II) and cadmium (II) ions from aqueous solutions by adding apple, grape, black currant, and orange pomace as well as to determine the adsorption efficiency of selected heavy metals. The studies were carried out in model systems. The results of the research showed that lead (II) and cadmium (II) ions are adsorbed on fruit pomace. The highest removal of cadmium (II) ions was observed in orange pomace and of lead (II) ions in apple pomace. The maximum tested cadmium ions absorption capacity was: 0.117235 mg/g in the case of freeze-dried apple pomace; 0.08618 mg/g in the case of freeze-dried currant pomace; 0.21915 m/g in the case of freeze-dried grape pomace and 0.29549 mg/g in the case of freeze-dried orange pomace. On the other hand, the maximum absorption of lead ions was: 0.457 mg/g in the case of freeze-dried apple pomace; 0.442 mg/g in the case of freeze-dried currant pomace; 0.3445 mg/g in the case of freeze-dried grape pomace and 0.421 mg/g in the case of freeze-dried orange pomace. On the basis of the performed measurements, it can be concluded that the tested waste can potentially be used as a cheap biosorbent for removing heavy metal ions from dilute aqueous solutions.

The increasing demand for energy throughout the world has led to an increase in the utilization of coal and, subsequently, in the production of large quantities of fly ash as a waste product. In the light of the increasing quantity of fly ash, with a growing demand for electrical energy and hence for thermal power plants, the main challenges faced by the researchers and planners have been to solve the various environmental problems that arise due to the unused and surplus quantity of fly ash. Fly ash is composed of minerals such as quartz, mullite, subordinately hematite and magnetite, carbon, and a prevalent phase of amorphous aluminosilicate. These oxides are very effective adsorbents. Hence, fly ash can be a promising candidate material for heavy metals removal. The aim of this study was to investigate the chemical modifications of coal fly ash (FA) treated with HNO3, CH3COONH4 (AcNH4), and sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (NaDDTC) as an adsorbent for the removal of lead(II) and cadmium(II) ions in single- and bi-component system. In laboratory tests, the equilibrium and kinetic adsorption were examined. The adsorption isotherm models in single-component system were analysed, among others Freundlich, Langmuir, Redlich-Peterson, Jovanovič, Fumkin-Fowler-Guggenheim, Fowler-Guggenheim-Jovanovič-Freundlich, and Halsey, as well as in bi-component system by means of extended Langmuir, Langmuir-Freundlich, and Jain-Snoeyink models. The maximum Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model can be grouped in the following order: FA-NaOH > FA-AcNH4 > FA > FA-NaDDTC > FA-HNO3. Adsorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions in single-component system, both the Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson models for the FA, FA-NaOH, and FA-AcNH4 could be fitted to experimental data. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of the FA-NaOH was found to be 220 mg·g–1 dry mass and 55 mg·g–1 dry mass for Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions respectively. Equilibrium experiments shows that the selectivity of FA-NaOH towards Pb(II) ions is greater than that of Cd(II) ions, which is related to their hydrated ionic radius and first hydrolysis equilibrium constant. The adsorption kinetics data were well fitted by a pseudo-second-order rate model (R2 = 0.998) but showed a very poor fit for the pseudo-first order model (R2 < 0.8). The Elovich and intra-particle model were analysed, also revealed that there are two separate stages in the sorption process, namely, the external diffusion and the inter-particle diffusion. It was found that the chemical enhancement of coal fly ash by NaOH treatment yields an effective and economically feasible material for the treatment of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions-containing effluents.

This research focused on using coriander seeds as low cost adsorbent to remove heavy metals ions such as lead, zinc, and nickel from wastewater. Different parameters were studied to obtain the best results, such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dosage, concentration of initial metals and agitation speed. The highest results were obtained at pH 6, 105 min contact time, 1 g/100 ml dosage, 50 mg/l initial concentration of metal ions and 200 rpm agitation speed at temperature 25 ± 2 °C, which were 95.926%, 89.799% and 79.255% for lead, zinc and nickel ions, respectively. The results were also categorized as the Langmuir and Freundlich models, and found that the Freundlich isotherm fit the experimental data better than the Langmuir isotherm. The pseudo-second order was shown to have a high degree of fitness based on kinetic data. The adsorbent was characterized using a variety of techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM).

Different compounds including toxic heavy metals ions have been used in various industrial branches for ages. Therefore, these compounds are nowadays often identified in the natural environment. Plants usually function like indirect transporters through which heavy metals, in the form of ions, infiltrate from the environment into the human and animals’ food chains. The present paper studied the influence of urban agglomeration on the accumulation of certain heavy metals in tansy. The content of heavy metals ions (Cr, Ni, Cd and Pb) was marked in the tansy leaves. Depending on the location of sampling, large variations in the heavy metal content were observed in the plant material. The research results indicate that the heavy metal content of tansy is influenced by the close “neighborhood” of a well-developed urban agglomeration such as patrol stations and factories.

The main aim of the scientific research was to study the ion-exchange processes in the treatment of industrial wastewaters containing a high concentration of heavy metal ions (Cu2+, Zn2+, Ni2+). The sorption results of heavy metal mixtures (Cu-Zn, Cu-Ni) from model solutions of sulfate salts on a strong-acid KU-2–8 cation exchanger in the H+-form were presented. The metals concentration was 10–50 meq/dm3. The efficiency conditions of cation regeneration in Cu2+-Zn2+, Cu2+-Ni2+-forms by 5, 8 and 10 % sulfuric acid solutions were studied. It was shown that the heavy metals from aqueous media can be removed not only from ion exchangers, but can also be restored from regenerative solutions by electrolysis to obtain metals in pure form. In general, the research results showed that the use of ion exchange is very effective in removing the heavy metal ions. The sorption efficiency and regeneration efficiency was about 100%.

Opis:
This study focused on the effect of heavy metal cobalt ions (at concentrations of 1–1000 ppm) on the development and enzymatic activity of four entomopathogenic fungi: Beauveria bassiana, Beauveria brongniartii, Isaria fumosorosea and Metarhizium robertsii, commonly used in biological plant protection. It was found that each of the tested species of fungi reacted individually to contact with the Co2+ ions at their various concentrations. Depending on the variants of the experiment carried out, there were changes in the development of the mycelia (mainly growth inhibition) and their morphological features (color and structure) in comparison to the control samples. Co2+ ions had a fungistatic effect on all fungal strains, whereas a fungicidal effect was noted at concentrations of 750 ppm and 1000 ppm against M. robertsii and I. fumosorosea, respectively. In addition, there was a discrepancy in enzymatic activity between the tested fungal species developing in the medium with varying concentrations of metal salt. The inhibitory effect of Co2+ ions on lipase production was observed in I. fumosorosea. Protease production was stimulated in B. bassiana at all Co2+ concentrations, whereas in M. robertsii this effect was noted at 1 ppm. The changing dynamics of extracellular fungal hydrolases, due to the action of Co2+ ions, may translate into the role of these microorganisms in the processes of insect pathogenesis. This work suggests that severe pollution of the environment by cobalt could be a restrictive factor for the development and pathogenicity of entomopathogenic fungi and must be taken into account for their successful application in biological plant protection.

Experimental data obtained were analysed in terms of Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin, Dubinin–Radushkevich, Redlich–Peterson, Sips, Toth, and Khan isotherms. The results of the study showed that orange peel, hazelnut shell, and walnut shell can be adequately used as low-cost alternatives for the removal of Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions from aqueous solutions with maximum sorption capacities of 15.51 and 19.8 mg/g, 11.55 and 16.65 mg/g, and 26.60 and 21.10 mg/g, respectively. The highest removal efficiency of Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions was obtained for hazelnut shells. The process was fast and about 90% of metal ions were removed by all the studied biosorbents. The sorption process was possibly chemisorption occurring on a heterogeneous surface.
