Opis:
The commonness of metal contamination, even at considerable distances from industrial centers and intensively used economic areas, has become the interest of many researchers. The issue of evaluating the state of the environment with the help of living organisms has become a very important part in the control of the natural environment. Honey bee (Apis mellifera L) is a good bioindicator as it is inextricably linked to the natural environment in which it lives. The aim of the research, and at the same time the main assumption of the study, was to evaluate the effectiveness of honeybees (Apis mellifera L) as bioindicators for the presence of Cu, Cr, Zn, Mn, Fe in the urban area (example of Bialystok city). The study includes pilot studies covering three sampling periods (March, June and September 2015). Analyses of metals were made by ASA method. The results showed the presence of Cu, Cr Zn, Mn and Fe in all bees samples. An increased content of Cr in bees was also found, which may be the result of the presence of this element in the environment (air, soil, water, plants, pollen) and in the impregnation agent applied to protect wooden elements of the bee hive. The research showed seasonal variation of metals in bees bodies. The main sources of studied metals in bee samples seem to be motorization, industry, and municipal economy within the urban area. Statistical calculations showed a common origin of majority of studied metals. Bee studies for metals contents can be an important element of a bio-monitoring of changing natural environment as a consequence of anthropogenic activity.

The dynamics of emission of heavy metals compounds into the air in Vinnytsia region (Ukraine) in 2003-2010 years is analyzed. The level of pollution for compounds of some heavy metals (Cd, Hg) has arisen, for others – has decreased (Pb, Cr) or has not changed (As, Ni). The sources of such pollution are defined according to the amount of the emissions of heavy metals compounds in different sectors of economy. In Vinnytsia region they include transport, industrial plants and municipal sector. Great quantity of transport and hazardous materials are consdered as the reasons of increasing of heavy metals emissions. Usage of more environment friendly resources (e.g. unleaded gasoline, natural gas instead of coal) is defined as the reason of reduction of heavy metals emission.

Leachate from public landfill in the city of Tangier, which is neither collected nor treated, could constitute a probable source of pollution of the groundwater table and of those of the Mlalah and Khandak Bou Hajjar wadis in the east, and the Mghogha and Ghir Boudra wadis to the south. This work aims to analyze the level of contamination at Tangier’s municipal waste disposal. The leachate samples were collected and analyzed during the period from 2016 to 2019 and the physicochemical parameters (humidity, pH, organic matter, etc.) were determined on these samples as well as the contents of five heavy metals (lead, cadmium, iron, chrome and zinc). Analysis of the well water shows the presence of polluting elements in the leachate water and a high concentration of metals (especially iron) that exceeds standards. This makes the effluent extremely toxic and thus presents a permanent threat to the health of the local population and the surrounding environment.

The means of transport and communication are the common source of environmental contamination. Most vehicles are equipped with internal combustion engines, which emit harmful substances such as carbon oxides, nitrogen oxides, soot, heavy metals which are components of the exhaust gases and particulates, and hydrocarbons during operation. The use of catalytic converters can reduce exhaust emissions, about 90%, but leads to the emission of platinum into the environment. The paper discusses pollution in the environment due to the impact of using motor vehicles.

The research on the topic of the dissertation was carried out within the coastal (southern) part of the Azov oblique dissected accumulative-denudated plain and the coastal strip of the coast of the Sea of Azov, as well as the valleys of the lower reaches of the Don and Kalmius rivers. The research area covered the modern territory of Taganrog and Rostov-on-Don cities and a suburban area up to 15-20 km away from the borders of these cities. According to the materials of the USSR soil map, as well as modern schemes of soil zoning in Russia, the study area covers the distribution area of ordinary chernozems and partially southern low-humus chernozems on loess rocks. The main zonal soil studied was ordinary chernozem. Ordinary warm chernozems with a short freezing period, belonging to the Azov-Ciscaucasian province of powerful and super-powerful chernozems, predominate in the soil cover of the Azov inclined plain, extending from the Donets Ridge to the shores of the Sea of Azov and the lower Don River.

Opis:
The main river of the Kosovo valley is the Sitnica River, which collects a large number of streams, recipients of wastewaterfrom various urban and industrial centers. The blockage of Sitnica river with waste and non-regulation of the bedding of this river makes this river flood tens of acres of worked ground surface through its course, causing great damage every spring and autumn. Uncontrolled discharge of heavy metals into the contaminated terrestrial environments ensures their transfer to plants, animals and humans and results in an impact on the environment and public health. Determination of the heavy metals concentration level for the assessment of soil pollution along the Sitnica River course was also the main purpose of this study, which was carried out in 2016. For analysis, 8 soil samples were taken at depths of 30–50 cm. From the analysis of the data it was noticed that the content of heavy metals such as Zn, Cd, Pb, Cr in some analyzed samples exceeds the maximum allowed values. The findings indicate high values of metal pollution in the samples taken in meadows as well as the agricultural lands stretching around the river.

Abandoned mining sites are largely responsible for the release of heavy metals into water systems. This study assessed heavy metals in the water collected from the mine sumps and bore-wells of an abandoned copper mine in Lasail, northern Oman. Other physiochemical parameters of the water were also evaluated. The waters were extremely acidic with very high electrical conductivity. Aluminium (Al), boron (B), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) were in very high concentrations, well above the limits recommended by Oman and World Health Organisation (WHO) standards. The principal component analysis (PCA) explained 93% of the variability. The impact of mining on the water quality of Lasail area is presented and remediation measures are recommended.

Water pollution in rivers is still a crucial problem for the countries that use river water as the primary water source. This study aimed to determine the water quality of the Musi river and the content of heavy metals in water, sediment and mussels as well as to predict the water quality of the Musi river in the next five years. The water samples were taken from 18 stations (sampling points) from upstream to downstream to be checked physically, chemically and biologically. Prediction of the river water quality was made using the QUAL2Kw software. The research results show that the Musi River water is categorized as lightly polluted with concentrations of TSS and DO that have passed the threshold. The heavy metals in river water, such as Pb and Cr have also passed the quality standard. The Fe, Mn, and Zn concentrations are pretty high in the sediment. In turn, in mussels, the metals measured were Fe, Cu, and Zn. The prediction results reveal that several values of the river quality parameters will pass the threshold value with the same pattern tendency from each station.

The purpose of this study was to assess the groundwater contamination from a sewage sludge landfill. The analysis was carried out in 2017 in accordance with the requirements of the national legislation for monitoring landfills and priority pollutants. The samples of groundwater from the landfill were taken from 25 observation wells, from depths of 45–60 m. The status and dynamics of changes in the landfill groundwater quality were estimated according to the data from the groundwater observation wells of the city observation network with regard to the chemical composition of groundwater and national standards of groundwater quality. The forecast estimates of a low level of pollutants entering groundwater through the soils characterized by low filtration properties were not justified. The concentration of heavy metals in groundwater was within the following range: Fe > Mn > Zn > Al > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cd > Hg. The excess concentration of the nitrogen-containing pollutants was observed within the range from 1.5 to 76 (on average 10 times) above the background value. The organic contamination of landfill groundwater (COD) is 2–9 times and BOD5 – 1.5–3 times higher than the average background value of groundwater observation wells in the city network. The probable cause for the pollutants entry into groundwater is associated with lithogenous and exogenous fracturing of the rocks and insufficient efficiency of the existing anti-filtration system of the landfill.

The aim of presented investigations was a comparison of heavy metal content in mineral fertilizers used in Poland and determining the sources of their origin in the fertilizers. The methods assumed as referential in fertilizer analysis were used to assess the contents of Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn in 44 samples of mineral fertilizers, including 29 fertilizers containing phosphorus (2 superphosphates and 27 multicomponent fertilizers), 14 nitrogen fertilizers and 1 potassium salt. Considerable amounts of heavy metals were determined only in phosphorous and multicomponent fertilizers. A small content of lead was assessed in nitrogen fertilizers and in potassium salt, whereas usually only trace amounts of the other metals were detected. In the group of phosphorus and multicomponent fertilizers zinc, chromium and nickel occur in the biggest quantities, whereas mercury and lead in the smallest ones. The potential main source of cadmium, chromium and zinc in fertilizers containing phosphorus is phosphorite raw material while the source of nickel in multicomponent fertilizers is admixtures of ground dolomite. The permissible content of cadmium (50 mg kg–1), lead (140 mg kg–1), or mercury (2 mg kg–1) were exceeded in none of the analyzed fertilizers or mineral fertilizers not used for liming.
W nawozach azotowych i w soli potasowej oznaczono jedynie niedużą zawartość ołowiu, a pozostałe metale najczęściej wykrywano w ilościach śladowych. W grupie nawozów fosforowych i wieloskładnikowych, w największych ilościach występuje cynk, chrom i nikiel, a w najmniejszych rtęć i ołów. Głównym źródłem kadmu, chromu i cynku w nawozach zawierających fosfor jest najprawdopodobniej surowiec fosforytowy, a niklu w nawozach wieloskładnikowych stosowane domieszki zmielonego dolomitu. W żadnym badanym nawozie nie zostały przekroczone dopuszczalne zawartości kadmu (50 mg kg-1), ołowiu (140 mg kg-1) i rtęci (2 mg kg-1) w nawozach mineralnych nie służących do wapnowania.

The analysis of heavy metals in plant leaves is suggested as a method for the identification of polluted areas. We determinted the following heavy metals: Zn, Pb and Cd concentrations in birch Betula pendula leaves, a common species found in urban parks and postindustrial areas in Poland. Samples of soil and birch leaves were collected in September 2007 from more and less polluted sites in Bedzin and Czeladz (Silesian province, southern Poland, 8 stands for each town). Concentrations of Zn, Pb and Cd in leaves and the upper layer of soil (0–10 cm) were determined. The heavy metal pollution of the investigated cities was on a comparable level. The obtained Cd and Pb concentrations in leaves were below the toxic range. Only Zn concentrations in some sites were higher than the level considered as toxic. Pb and Cd levels determined in the investigations exceed acceptable metal concentrations for soil in more stands in Bedzin.
Jako jedną z metod identyfikacji zanieczyszczonych powierzchni podaje się analizę koncentracji metali ciężkich w liściach roślin. Oznaczano zawartość metali ciężkich Zn, Pb i Cd w liściach brzozy brodawkowatej Betula pendula Roth. pospolitego gatunku występującego w parkach i terenach poprzemysłowych w Polsce. Próbki gleby i liści brzozy pobierano we wrześniu 2007 r. z mniej i bardziej zanieczyszczonych miejsc miasta Czeladzi i Bedzina (województwo śląskie, Polska południowa, 8 stanowisk dla każdego miasta). From among various industrial contaminants which can pollute agricultural environment, heavy metals having the capacity of bioaccumulation deserve special attention. The total composition analysis of the heavy metals content in the polluted soils does not provide enough data about their accessibility to the crops cultivated on these soils. It is very important to have the information about the forms in which the examined element exists, because it decides about its mobility and toxicity for the environment. Using the sequential chemical extraction method of Zeien and Brümmer the fractions of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd and As in the soils influenced by emissions from the Copper Smelter GŁOGÓW, were investigated. The aim of these investigations was to determine the availability assessment of the mentioned elements to the crops cultivated in this region.

Objectives Environmental pollution is associated with morbidity and mortality for chronic-degenerative diseases. Recent data points out a relationship between proximity to industrial plants and mortality due to neoplasms. The aim of this study has been to compare mortality due to chronic-degenerative diseases in the area of Tuscany (Bassa Val di Cecina), Italy, characterized by the presence of 2 neighboring municipalities similar in terms of size but with substantial differences in industrial activities: Rosignano (the site of chemical, energy production and waste processing industries) and Cecina (with no polluting activity). Material and Methods Standardized mortality rates for the 2001–2010 decade were calculated; the data of the whole Tuscany was assumed as reference. Environmental levels of pollutants were obtained by databases of the Environmental Protection Agency of Tuscany Region (Agenzia Regionale per la Protezione Ambientale della Toscana – ARPAT). Maximum tolerated pollutant levels set by national laws were assumed as reference. Results In the whole Bassa Val di Cecina, significantly elevated standardized mortality rates due to mesothelioma, ischemic heart diseases, cerebrovascular diseases and Alzheimer and other degenerative diseases of nervous system were observed. In the municipality of Rosignano, a significant excess of mortality for all these groups of diseases was confirmed. On the contrary, the municipality of Cecina showed only significantly higher mortality rates for ischemic heart diseases. Elevated levels of heavy metals in sea water and of particulate matter which contains particles of diameter ≤ 10 mm (PM₁₀) and ozone in air were detected in Rosignano. Conclusions This study shows an excess of mortality for chronic-degenerative diseases in the area with elevated concentration of polluting factories. Proximity to industrial plants seems to represent a risk factor for those diseases. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2017;30(4):641–653

Opis:
This paper focused on the fate of pollution and management of hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) and heavy metals in the Zarqa River Basin in Jordan. The Zarqa River basin was selected in this research because it contains the majority of Jordanian industries, which are the main source of pollutants including Cr(VI) and heavy metals. This will help in assisting water resource management organizations in decision making when coping with pollution. Industries related to sources and impacts of Cr(VI) and heavy metals were identified, and the administration measures were highlighted according to their role in improving water quality. An analysis of water samples along the Zarqa River was conducted between 2016-2019 to evaluate the heavy metals concentrations and compare the results with the Jordanian standards. Findings showed that Cr(VI) was below the allowable limits (<5 μg/l), and the heavy metals were within the allowed limits set forth in the Jordanian Standard. The ranges of water analysis values (μg/L) were; DO 4640–6480, Fe <40–80, Mn 20–128, Co <20–30, Pb 80–190, Zn 70–100, and Cu <80–190, Al 700–730, V <70–100, B <300–351, Si 1100–1800, Ni 30, and Cd <10. These findings indicated that the quality of the Zarqa River would not cause hazardous effects. However, this was not the case few years ago due the current protection measures. At present some industries have been relocated from the Zarqa Basin to an area that does not pose any environmental hazards, while the rest of industries remained in the basin, but they have established an on-site treatment plant for industrial waste under the control of Jordanian government, and the enforcement of the environmental protection law. These measures must be monitored and updated by decision makers in a sustainable manner to prevent any water pollution.

Monitoring leachate, groundwater and surface water aiming to determinate the concentration of heavy metals (Hg, Zn, Ni, Cr+6,Cd, Pb) at the municipal solid waste landfill Štěpánovice took place in the years 2002–2010. The values of heavy metals concentration oscillated as follows: Zn (0.05 – 0.37 μg/ dm3), Cr+6 (0.01 – 3.3 μg/dm3), Hg (0.0001 – 0.001 (μg/ dm3), Ni (0.001 – 0.19 μg/ dm3, Cd (0.001 – 0.007 μg/ dm3) and Pb (0.002 – 0.176 μg/dm3). The measured data show that the concentrations of heavy metals met the limits provided by law. Under the current landfill operation mode, the results of measurements do not indicate any negative impact on the quality of surface water, groundwater or leachate water.
