on-site wastewater treatment facilities
Opis:
On-site wastewater treatment plants are designed to provide individual treatment of household wastewater to standards similar to those provided by municipal waste water treatment plants. In areas lacking sewage systems, they are an ecological alternative to septic tanks, but their correct functioning is determined by several factors, in particular sufficient infiltration parameters of soils and appropriate distance to the groundwater table. Failure to meet the above requirements may lead to disturbances in their functioning resulting in overflowing and, ultimately, pollution of surrounding soil and aquatic environment. This article shows a case study of groundwater pollution from sewage in a commune where over 400 on-site sewage treatment facilities were installed, funded from the EU programmes. During research conducted by the intervention team of the Polish Hydrogeological Survey it was found that the area of investment is characterized by low filtration parameters, and depth to the water table in many cases is limited and does not provide adequate filtration. Impact of the investment on the groundwater quality was demonstrated by analytical studies investigating the presence of microbial agents and pharmaceuticals.

Opis:
The coal mine waste dumps located in the southern provinces of Poland pollute groundwater with metals. As a result of batch experiments presented in the paper, it can be said that it is possible to remove chromium and copper from the groundwater (which is affected by acid mine drainage, thus characterized by low pH) with the use of zero-valent iron in permeable reactive barrier technology. The contaminants are removed from the aquifer by the flow of groundwater through a reactive barrier filled with a special reactive material. Rapid metal removal likely occurred due to the reduction and the precipitation/co-precipitation and/or due to the adsorption onto the iron metal surface or/and onto the iron corrosion products. In accordance with the research it has also been found that in more alkaline environment, the oxidation of Fe(0) proceeds slower. A rapid decrease of the redox potential as well as the increases of pH have also been observed in the batch tests when the dose of Fe(0) in solutions increased.

In this work, physicochemical and bacteriological analyses of leachate collected from three different landfills in the Marrakech region in Morocco were carried out. The results showed that the leachate is highly loaded with organic matter, chemical and bacteriological elements and some heavy metals, this load depends of the nature of landfill (rural or urban) and also of its age (young or old), the values of the parameters exceed the limit values for discharge into the natural medium. Physicochemical and bacteriological analyses of groundwater from wells downstream of these landfills were also carried out; The results showed that they had medium to poor quality according to the type of landfill. This is due to the presence of organic matter, total coliforms, total phosphorus and total nitrogen in many studied wells.

The main aim of the paper was to formulate a proposal of using the draining barriers as a method of limiting pollutants in the groundwater reservoir. Primary processes of pollutants migration and examples of functioning the draining barriers work against the spread of various pollutants in the groundwater were indicated. An untypical kind of draining barrier, i.e. wells which were designed as a hydrogeological borehole to exhaust water intended for consumption, was selected as the research object. For analytical purposes, the available archival results of the physicochemical analysis of groundwater exhausted from the wells, located in the water intake so-called “belt D” in Kraków-Nowa Huta were used. The database was analysed by specialist programs, and the dispersion migration of pollutants from the existing metallurgical waste dump “Ruszcza” in time was presented. Temporary and spatial variability of the physicochemical parameters of groundwater was done during the analysis. The analysis was performed both in the draining barriers wells and in the intake boreholes. A geostatistical analysis of the variability of pollutant spread in the groundwater medium was a vital factor in the appraisal efficiency of the draining barriers operation. It was shown that the highest contents of the researched substances were present in the wells, which are located the nearest of metallurgical waste dump “Ruszcza” and are thereby the wells co-forming draining barriers. The efficiency of draining barriers was found after a thorough analysis.

Groundwater is a very important natural resource to support the activities of the residents of Pakis District, Malang Regency. On the other hand, increased activity puts pressure on groundwater quality. Agricultural intensification, urbanisation, and industrialisation can be sources of pollutants. Hydrological factors, topography, lithology, and surrounding rainfall are triggers for contamination of groundwater. The main objective of this research is to determine the characteristics, quality of groundwater, and its susceptibility to pollution. To complete this research, geoelectric measurements were carried out at 43 points spread throughout the study area and sampling of 18 shallow wells in agricultural, residential, and industrial areas for chemical analysis. All data obtained were analysed to create a map of the spatial distribution of groundwater vulnerability. The results show that the groundwater in the study location is in the transition zone and flows through the volcanic rock layers. The level of groundwater pollution is in the uncontaminated status to heavily polluted with pollutants in the form of heavy metal manganese and Escherichia coli bacteria. The spatial distribution of groundwater intrinsic vulnerability shows low, moderate, and high levels of vulnerability, respectively 32.99%, 60.87%, and 6.14% of the research area. Groundwater specific vulnerability associated with land use factors shows that 26.25% are negligible, 42.46% are low, and 31.29% are moderate. From this it can be concluded that the study area has been polluted both geogenically and anthropogenically, therefore, special actions must be taken to restore the quality of groundwater.

Leachate from public landfill in the city of Tangier, which is neither collected nor treated, could constitute a probable source of pollution of the groundwater table and of those of the Mlalah and Khandak Bou Hajjar wadis in the east, and the Mghogha and Ghir Boudra wadis to the south. This work aims to analyze the level of contamination at Tangier’s municipal waste disposal. The leachate samples were collected and analyzed during the period from 2016 to 2019 and the physicochemical parameters (humidity, pH, organic matter, etc.) were determined on these samples as well as the contents of five heavy metals (lead, cadmium, iron, chrome and zinc). Analysis of the well water shows the presence of polluting elements in the leachate water and a high concentration of metals (especially iron) that exceeds standards. This makes the effluent extremely toxic and thus presents a permanent threat to the health of the local population and the surrounding environment.

During the current research the level of groundwater (piezometers P2,P3,P4) and surface water (reservoir B) contamination during landfill operation and after its closure were examined. 113 samples of groundwater and surface water were collected from spring 2005 until spring 2012, i.e. three years after the landfill closure. The samples were analyzed for pH, EC, PAH, TOC and six heavy metals: Cr, Hg, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cu. The heavy metal concentration in groundwater and surface water both during landfill operations and after the landfill closure remained on a similar level and did not exceed permissible levels determined by WHO. Cr was an exception, because its concentra¬tion, during landfill exploitation, reached the value of 0.028 mg/l in surface water. In all examined after the landfill was closed a decrease in the EC value was observed. With the landfill closure the TOC concentration in groundwater increased from 1.8–3.4 to 2.07–3.6 mg/l and the PAH concentration from 0.01 to 0.02 mikrog/l. It may be attributed to a slowdown of decomposition in landfill. An additional PAH source for ground and surface water are surface run-offs form road pavements, yards and parking lots. The remaining high TOC level in a surface reservoir after the landfill closure is also a result of eurotrophisation, which enriches water with organic substances. Seasonal changes in the concentration of pollutants were observed, resulting both from their dilution by atmospheric precipitation (EC, pH, Cd, Cu) and due to washing them out from neighboring areas and enriching with them the analyzed water (Cu, PAH, Hg).

In this article, the purpose of the research was to study the ecological characteristics of groundwater and central water supply used for drinking and economic activity of the Kievka village. The hydrochemical indicators of the samples were determined with conventional methods, and performed on 16 indicators: pH, electrical conductivity, suspended solids, dry residue, chlorides, sulfates, phosphates, total hardness, sodium, ammonium nitrogen, nitrites, nitrates, chemical oxygen consumption (COD), anionic surfactants (APAS), total iron, and manganese. While assessing the hydrochemical state of drinking water in the village of Kievka, it can be noted the "Altyn-dan" kindergarten and the Kiev secondary school No. 3, exceed the MAC which is determined by certain indicators. As a result of microbiological studies of the water samples from the village of Kievka, it was revealed that the total microbial number is normal. It was determined that a different number of fungi and actinomycites were present in all samples. At the initial concentration, a large concentration of fungi was observed in all samples.

Opis:
The Henaya Irrigated Perimeter (HIP) is an agricultural area irrigated by treated wastewater (TWW) of Ain El Hout treatment plant. Various analyses have shown that i) this water has low concentration of heavy metals and toxic elements, ii) the average values of the physicochemical parameters for 136 samples are satisfactory (29.2 mg O2∙dm–3 for chemical oxygen demands – COD, 13.14 mg O2∙dm–3 for biological oxygen demands – BOD, 14.2 mg∙dm–3 of suspended matter – SM, 1.82 mg∙dm–3 of N-NO3, 7.7 for pH and 927.74 μS∙cm–1 for electric conductivity – EC). Thirdly, it contains a high number of bacteria and nematodes (7200 CFU∙(100 dm3)–1 for faecal coliforms and 30 eggs∙dm–3 for intestinal Nematodes) which makes it dangerous for groundwater contamination. The objective in this work is to characterize the TWW and evaluate the impact of it use for irrigation on the quality of Hennaya groundwater. Before this, one has to prove that there is an amount of TWW that feeds the water table to show that there is a risk of pollution. We then estimated the aquifer minimum recharge value by TWW using the Thormthwaite method. The estimation has given 92 mm which is an important quantity. The results of the groundwater microbiological analyses reveal no sign of contamination. The cause is the efficiency of the degradation of pollutants of the Vadose zone. The soil purifying power Md of the HIP was evaluated by the Rehse method and gave values ranging from 2.1 to 12.7 which indicated a complete purification.
Obszar nawodnień Hennaya to grunty rolnicze nawadniane oczyszczonymi ściekami z oczyszczalni Ain El Hout.

Assessment of groundwater vulnerability to pollution is important for its utilization and the resources protection. The DRASTIC model is one of the mostly often used models for groundwater vulnerability assessment. The model uses seven environmental parameters. The model can be modified, basing on local hydrogeological conditions, in order to obtain more reliable results. In this study two variants of the model were tested. It was found that the DRASTIC model in the environmental conditions of NE Poland gives correct, sensible results and should be recommended for practical use. However, standardization of the method would be a good idea and would make the method more widely applicable.

Projekt INCORE (Integrated Concept for Groundwater Remediation) przeprowadzony został w ramach 5-tego Programu Ramowego Unii Europejskiej. Testowe pompowania imisyjne były prowadzone w 21 małośrednicowych otworach badawczych, umieszczonych w płaszczyźnie kontrolnej prostopadłej do głównego kierunku spływu wód podziemnych, w badanej przypowierzchniowej warstwie wodonośnej i jednocześnie równoległej do koryta rzeki Bzury, drenującej teren gazowni. Analizy laboratoryjne pobranych próbek wód podziemnych wykazały zawartości węglowodorów lotnych w przedziale od poniżej granicy wykrywalności do kilku tysięcy mikrogramów w litrze. W większości pobranych próbek oznaczone ilości BTEX przekraczały dopuszczalne stężenia w wodach pitnych. Przekroczenia dotyczyły głównie benzenu i w mniejszym stopniu toluenu. Stężenia WWA w wielu próbkach przekroczyły wartość 10 000 mg/l, przy czym stwierdzono dominację związków o mniejszej liczbie pierścieni, takich jak naftalen, acenaftylen, acenaften, fluoren, fenantren i antracen.

Opis:
This paper synthetically describes results of research conducted in Gdańsk in 2009–2014. The chemical composition of groundwater varies between aquifers. Intermoraine, Miocene and Oligocene aquifers conduct freshwater with a mineralisation of below 600 mg/dm³. These waters preserve natural chemical composition and are characterized by first- and second-class quality. The groundwater of the Cretaceous formation are low-mineralised and represent mainly the HCO³-Na type and, to a smaller extent, to the HCO³-Ca type. High concentrations of fluoride ion are also a specific feature of these waters, reaching even 2 mg/dm³ in some places. The groundwater composition of the Pleistocene-Holocene aquifer is often altered due to the impact of anthropogenic factors. The performed study has enabled identification of zones of past groundwater pollution. The work was focused on determining the type, extent, concentration and the rate of transport of contaminants. Two zones of polluted water have been identified with different specific substances. Based on the study, activities aimed at reducing the risks and improving an appropriate water management have been undertaken, particularly with regard to the endangered groundwater intakes.

The status and dynamics of changes in the landfill groundwater quality were estimated according to the data from the groundwater observation wells of the city observation network with regard to the chemical composition of groundwater and national standards of groundwater quality. The forecast estimates of a low level of pollutants entering groundwater through the soils characterized by low filtration properties were not justified. The concentration of heavy metals in groundwater was within the following range: Fe > Mn > Zn > Al > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cd > Hg. The excess concentration of the nitrogen-containing pollutants was observed within the range from 1.5 to 76 (on average 10 times) above the background value. The organic contamination of landfill groundwater (COD) is 2–9 times and BOD5 – 1.5–3 times higher than the average background value of groundwater observation wells in the city network. The probable cause for the pollutants entry into groundwater is associated with lithogenous and exogenous fracturing of the rocks and insufficient efficiency of the existing anti-filtration system of the landfill.
