Opis:
The paper presents resent research results on the effect of aluminium (Al) toxicity on forest soils. It has been stated that with the present acidification level of the environment the toxic effect of aluminium compounds does not threaten the sustainability of stands. At the same time, the simulation of heavy acidification of soil environment has proved that mixed stands are more resistant to Al than pure spruce stands growing under the same conditions.

Forest bed layer developing in a tree stand plays a very important part in functioning of forest ecosystem and is of key importance in soil carbon accumulation. In two different study objects (Niedźwiady and Tuczno), 351 forest bed thickness measurements were taken in 117 pine stands of different age classes, separating them into those growing on forest lands (28 tree stands – 84 measurements) and those on post−agricultural ones (89 tree stands – 27 measurements). The above relationships were analysed, what showed a relation between the thickness of forest bed and the age of tree stand. Forest bed thickness increases together with tree stand age, both on forest and post−agricultural soils.

Opis:
The missing data on bulk density make impossible the calculations of soil water retention, organic carbon pools and evaluation of the numerical indices of soil and forest habitat fertility and potential productivity. A common reason of skipping of bulk density measurement is the high content of rock fragments in soil, in particular in the subsoil layers, that may hamper the collection of samples with undisturbed soil structure. The aim of present study was to analyse the relationships between bulk density and basic properties of mountain soils, where the problem of high skeleton content is relatively common, selection of the properties of the largest impact on the soil bulk density, and the fitting of the mathematical model (equation) that allows the prediction of soil bulk density at the highest available statistical significance. Forest soils in the Sudeten Mountains and the Sudeten Foreland, SW Poland (total number of samples N=580), situated on various bedrocks (granite, basalts, gneiss, mica schists, sandstones, mudstones, etc.) were selected to analysis. It was found in those soils featured by large variability of soil texture (the range of clay content 0−40%), skeleton content (0−74%), and organic carbon content (0.09−50%) in the soil profile, that the bulk density (having the values 0.10−1.87 g/cm3 in mineral layers and 0.04−0.58 g/cm3 in organic/litter layers) was individually correlated with the organic carbon content, skeleton content, clay content, and the depth of sampling (depth of particular soil layer), but the multifactor analysis has shown, that the organic carbon content has the highest impact on the bulk density and the organic carbon alone is sufficient for reliable prediction of soil bulk density. The best fitting of the measured and predicted bulk densities (R2=0.83) was provided by ‘dose−response’ Hill model: dv=1.72–[(2.36·Corg0.6)/(13.80.6+Corg0.6)], that returned dv values between 0.10 and 1.72 g/cm3 in a range of Corg content between 50 and 0%.

The aim of the study was to describe biochemical reactions in the soil based on the activity of urease and dehydrogenases in Scots pine stands damaged during and differentially managed after hurricanes. Soil enzymatic activity was investigated in 2005 and again in 2013 for selected stands in the Pisz Forest District where wind damage occurred in 2002. Most of the damaged stands were cut down and replanted, but 445 ha were left untouched for study purposes. The investigated areas differed with respect to stand damage and management. The enzymatic activity correlated well with the content of organic matter which was higher in organic than in mineral soils. In the area left to regenerate naturally, dehydrogenase and urease activity was higher in 2013 compared to 2005, which suggests the improvement of site conditions. The values of the examined biochemical parameters were correlated with the type of forest regeneration, with the forest soil regeneration being higher in artificially than in naturally regenerated stands. Changes of soil enzymatic activity were correlated with the level of stand damage and the type of management after wind damage.

Opis:
Comparative studies on the content and profile distribution patterns of phosphorus fractions in arable and forest Cambic Chernozems were conducted near the village Báb (western Slovakia). Soil samples were collected from every 10 cm and analyzed using standard procedures in soil science. Long term differences in the type of the studied soils usage were reflected in their physical and chemical properties (bulk density, porosity, acidity, the total content of organic carbon and nitrogen), as well as in the content and profile distribution patterns of phosphorus fractions. Total phosphorus content ranged from 498.8 to 754.7 mg/kg in arable soil and from 480.4 to 835.9 mg/kg in forest soil. Residual fraction, which constituted 54.9−77.8% of total phosphorus in arable soil and 57.3−79.2% in forest soil, was a predominant fraction. Such large contribution of this fraction is typical for young soils, with weakly weathered mineral substrates. Exchangeable phosphorus in arable soil constituted 0.6−6.1%, while 0.5−3.0% in forest soil, showing decreasing trends with depth in both soils. Free iron oxides and carbonates were important factors influencing profile distribution of phosphorus in the investigated soils. Iron oxides bound the element mainly in acidified horizons, whereas carbonates in alakaline (Bw and C) horizons. Organic fraction significantly differed in the investigated soils. A much larger content and contribution of this fraction in total phosphorus was noticed in forest soil. The content of organic phosphorus was positively related to the content of organic carbon. Stable fraction of organic phosphorus predominated over labile one in both soils.

The paper describes the influence of clear−cutting on the fertility of rusty soils expressed by trophic soil index. Soils in the Spała Forest District (central Poland) were covered by coniferous or mixed coniferous forests. Clear−cutting in acidic and oligotrophic mixed coniferous forests decreased soil fertility and affected an increase of hydrolitic acidity, particularly in Oh and Bv horizons. This type of timber harvest influenced also decrease of organic carbon in the first year after cutting.

The aim of these studies was to estimate the enzymatic activity and chemical properties of soils of Taxus baccata L. stands in selected forest reserves as well as in managed forest stands that do not belong to reserves. Furthermore, I compared the soil fertility of both types of forest stand using a biochemical soil quality indicator. The studies were conducted in the following reserves: “Bogdanieckie Cisy”, “Cisy Rokickie”, “Cisy Tychowskie”, “Cisy w Czarnem”, as well as in managed forest stands with the same soil and habitat type as the above-mentioned reserves. Analyses showed a lower activity of urease, asparaginase, acid phosphatase and dehydrogenase in soils of the managed forests than in soils of the reserves. The soil nutrient availability given by the total organic carbon, nitrogen, and alkaline cation content as well as soil sorption capacity were significantly lower outside the forest reserves. Chemical and biochemical parameters were used to calculate a biochemical index of soil fertility. The index was higher for soil in forest reserves than for soil in managed forest stands located outside reserves. This result held true regardless of the biochemical parameters used in the calculation. As has been shown in previous studies on protected areas with no cultivation that are largely influenced by natural processes, biochemical indices can be very useful for comparative analyses aiming at estimating soil quality or the reaction of soil to external factors, both natural and anthropogenic.

Opis:
The paper presents results of the studies on Cu, Mn and Zn content in forest soils of northern and central Poland covered by intensive monitoring. The investigated stands (Białowieża, Chojnów, Gdańsk, Krotoszyn, Krucz, Łąck, Strzałowo, Suwałki) cover various soil reference groups, including Brunic Arenosols, Cambisols and Stagnosols, developed from Quaternary deposits of different origin – glacial till, fluvioglacial sand and aeolian sand over fluvioglacial sand. The soils were sampled from O−horizons and mineral layers from the depths of 0−5, 5−10, 10−20, 20−40 and 40−80 cm. Analysis were performed using standard procedures in soil science and included basic properties (particle−size distribution, pH, organic carbon and total nitrogen), and the contents of Cu, Mn and Zn determined by ICP−OES technique after samples digestion in aqua regia. The noted contents of metals in the soils varied among stands, depending on origin of deposits and their textural parameters. The content of Cu in mineral horizons ranged from 0.0 to 20.0 mg/kg, Mn from 31.0 to 585.0 mg/kg and Zn from 3,6 to 255.0 mg/kg, whereas in O−horizons 3.0−29.1 mg/kg, 86.0−3627.7 mg/kg and 11.0−68.0 mg/kg, respectively. The noted content did not reach geochemical background in most cases, which is typical for forest soils of Poland. It indicates good ecological condition of the studied ecosystems and limited anthropopressure in this range. Vertical variability in the content of Cu, Mn and Zn constituted reflection of soil−forming processes and the influence of vegetation, as a key−factor in element's cycling in forest ecosystems. Strong influence of this factor is confirmed by higher concentration of the studied metals in O−horizon as compared to mineral soil. Moreover, a significant role of lithological discontinuities and water regime have been noted in some stands.

The analysis embraced two documents: Site−based principles of silviculture 2004 and Instruction of forest management. Part II. Instruction of differentiating and mapping forest sites 2003. It was pointed out that the soil criteria adopted in these two documents are inconsistent and incomplete and make it impossible for the appraiser to clearly distinguish forest sites on the basis of soil properties.

Opis:
The objective of the paper was to estimate i) the carbon accumulation in soils of different forest site types as well as ii) its changes with regard to the depth of the soil profile. The investigation was carried out in the Przedbórz Forest District (central Poland) on 43 study plots, including different forest sites – fresh coniferous forest (Bśw), fresh mixed coniferous forest (BMśw), fresh mixed broadleaved forest (LMśw) and fresh broadleaved forest (Lśw). On each plot soil pits were dug and samples for laboratory analysis were collected. The following characteristics were determined in the soil samples: pH, the content of organic C and total N, particle−size distribution, the content of exchangeable Ca, Mg, Na and K, and hydrolityc acidity. The obtained results demonstrated that soils of Bśw, BMśw and LMśw sites characterized by higher carbon accumulation in surface horizon to 50 cm depth compared to the most eutrophic sites (Lśw). The rate of carbon accumu− lation in forest soils depend on the humus type which is connected with species composition of stands. Domination of Scots pine in stand affects the formation of ectohumus and leads to higher C accumulation in surface horizons on Bśw, BMśw and LMśw sites. In soils of Bśw, BMśw and LMśw sites carbon stored in the horizons to 50 cm constitutes 64−94% of the total carbon accu− mulated, while on the eutrophic sites (Lśw) this share amounts to 39−72%. The value of the total carbon stock in soils of fresh forest sites can be estimated on the basis of carbon stock in horizons to 50 cm depth.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of the study of changes in the normal volume of absorption capacity of soil skeletons formed from the Magura sandstone in the Beskid Makowski area, and sampled from different genetic horizons. In the field of hydrology, the key issue in assessing the water storage capacity of the soil cover storage reservoir is the water storage capacity of the skeleton part. In the case of mountain soils, the issue of determining water storage capacity seems to be of importance due to the significant share of skeleton fraction in the soil cover. Moreover, the absorption capacity of the skeleton is related to the fraction volume. Soil test pits were executed in the area of Myślenice Forest District (southern Poland), in the habitat of Carpathian beech species Dentario glandulosae−Fagetum, in a stand of fir and spruce Abieti Piceetum. The scope of field work included sampling of 6 test profiles. In each profile, samples were taken from three identified genetic horizons. Sieve analysis method was used to determine the total content of skeleton and fine earth, and percentage share of each fraction. For each skeleton fractions, normal absorption capacity and bulk density were found. An important, supplementary part of the study was the isolation of fine−grained and coarse sandstone in each sample. After such processing, the collected material was compared with the material remaining after the successive stages of soil skeleton abrasion (weathering) in an aqueous medium, according to methodological assumptions. A device was used to perform this stage of the study. Changes in water storage capacity were mainly considered taking into account the fraction size and the location depth in a soil profile (without specifying the thickness changes). Differences were found between the absorption capacity of skeleton occurring naturally in the soil, and water absorption capacity of skeleton devoid of the outer layer of detritus as a result of the abrasion method. Water storage capacity values were decreasing after each successive step of the experimental run, along with increasing fraction size and the depth of their position in the profile. Preliminary results showed that the changes of absorption capacity are more strongly correlated with size of the fraction than with position in a genetic horizon.
