Opis:
Paper present results of mineralogical examination of various genetic types of flints and obsidian were performed using polarizing light microscopy, SEM and EDX methods were performed during last 3o years. Various method were used for determining possible relations between internal structures of these raw materials and relations to the best directions for processing. Analyses showed that the best directions for preparation of flint implements are parallel to directions of optical orientation of micro crystalline quartz present in flint. This orientation was the result of the recrystallization process of silica from opal to chalcedony and quartz. The type of processes known as ageing of silica active and observed in flint nodules have persisted for a million years. The growth of microcrystals in primary opal of flints goes a specially well perpendicularly to the direction of stress, i.e., perpendicular to the thickening of rock layers (mostly limestones). Performed investigation confirmed the primary flint nodules formed in situ from sponga organisms show regular nodule shapes. Secondary flints formed due to migration of dissolved silica in deposited sediment had mostly irregular shape. Secondary crystals of quartz present in these flints do not show space orientation and because of this the secondary flints are bad for knapping

Opis:
The article presents the way in which the term “geology” in its today’s meaning was formed. The reasons for its consolidation among the naturalists in Poland and throughout Europe are pointed out. Thanks to the scientific influence of the father of European mineralogy A.G. Werner (1749-1817), the term geology was in some cases replaced by geognosy and oryctognosy. In turn, the father of Polish geology, Stanisław Staszic (1755-1826), favoured using the term ziemiorodztwo (“terrogenesis”). Probably, for the first time the term geology was used in Polish in 1804 by Józef Wybicki (1747-1822), the creator of the national anthem “Dąbrowski Mazurka”, and by Jan Śniadecki (1756-1830), an outstanding geographer, mathematician and astronomer.

Opis:
The investigation of geology, stone implements and pottery presented below was performed in 2004 during works conducted by mixed american-egyptian mission at Heraconpolis archaeological site. The geological examination documents that the site was located on a dry, big delta of big wadi, coming from west into Nile Valley. This location means that while the site was functioning at phases Nagada II and III mentioned wadi did not conduct water i.e. climate was very dry. The investigation of present geological phenomena shows continuous growth of salinity of the soils at tested area. The investigation of stone implements discovered at two examined archaeological trenches confirmed the presence of various rocks, chipped flint implements as well as grinders. These objects were discovered at two depths representing various archaeological layers. Examination of pottery showed advanced technologies of preparation of ceramic mass as well as technology of firing. Data obtained from computer analyses confirm differentiation of tested ceramic masses.
