Opis:
Coal beds could contain various amount of methane. This attribute might be dangerous in shafts or quarrying. Among other things, the works in the coal beds, including drilling, potentially there is a risk of exceeding the methane lower explosive limit. But on the other hand it is a source of unconventional hydrocarbon accumulations. In this paper geochemical characteristic of organic matter of tertiary brown coal from central part of Poland were performed. Geochemical surveys helps to know about genesis of methane from study area. The analysed samples contain various quantity of organic carbon, from 20,74 to 71.93 wt. %. Lignite from examine samples have weak hydrocarbon potential. In tertiary sediments prevails III type of kerogen with admixture of II type of kerogen. The thermal maturity of the tertiary organic matter changes within the interval from 354 to 419 in Tmax scale. Organic matter is immature. The composition of bitumens is different in various part of study area. Elemental analysis confirm that brown coal was comprised mostly by humic-group macerals. Coal samples contain methane with mixed genesis.

Opis:
The Middle–Upper Jurassic sediments of the Niedzica-Podmajerz section was the subject of integrated study, including sedimentological, geochemical and stratigraphic analysis. The studied section is located in the Pieniny Klippen Belt area and belongs to the Niedzica unit. The section is characterized by continuous exposure of Jurassic carbonate-silica deposits extending from the Bajocian to Kimmeridgian, showing a transition from crinoidal limestones representing typical neritic facies to pelagic facies, i.e. radiolarites and red nodular limestones. The following lithofacies were distinguished in the studied section: grey crinoidal limestones (Smolegowa Limestone Formation), red crinoidal limestones (Krupianka Limestone Formation), red nodular limestones (Niedzica Limestone Formation), radiolarites (Czajakowa Radiolarites Formation) and red nodular limestones (Czorsztyn Limestone Formation). Based on a multidisciplinary dataset, the palaeoenvironmental interpretation was proposed. The results of magnetic susceptibility (MS), gamma-ray spectrometric measurements, CaCO3 content, δ13C analysis and concentrations of major and trace elements data indicate a rapid change in sedimentary conditions at the Callovian–Oxfordian boundary. Variations of δ13C from the Niedzica-Podmajerz indicate global changes in biological productivity, ocean circulation and burial of organic matter in the Tethys area, analogies of which can be found, for example, in Fatricum Domain in the Tatra Mountains. Records of MS, elements K, Th, Al, as well as Ti/Al and Zr/Al proxies indicate probably a period of increased (Lower Bathonian–Upper Callovian) and decreased (Oxfordian) detrital supply to the sedimentary basin. This process was most likely climatically controlled. The CaCO3 results indicate the variability of carbonate production. The lowest values of calcium carbonate (<20%) in Niedzica-Podmajerz section was recorded in the middle part of the radiolarites of the Czajakowa Radiolarite Formation, corresponding to the phase of the carbonate crisis. From this interval, the amount of carbonates in the rocks gradually increases, indicating a return to carbonate sedimentation. These fluctuations probably reflect changes in the position of the ACD and CCD.

Opis:
This research is focused on a small kettle hole located within the Morąg moraines (Iława Lake District, NE Poland). The study objective was to determine the impact of palaeoenvironmental changes in sedimentation and properties of sediments filling the bottom of the kettle hole. Sedimentological, geochemical, and palaeobotanical studies enabled us to distinguish several development phases of the kettle hole, and cluster analysis performed on physicochemical data yielded seven local geochemical zones (JuI/I to JuI/VII). The beginning of biogenic sedimentation in the conditions of a small water body, functioning in the Late Glacial period (4.20–4.10 m), was determined on the basis of palaeobotanical research. Sediments deposited in the lake during its further evolution were rich in microelements such as Ca, Na, Mg, and K, and to a smaller extent – Fe and Mn (JuI/I–III local geochemical zones). The Late Glacial lacustrine period ended with the accumulation of very silty, pollen-free gyttja, with a stratigraphic hiatus (JuI/IV, 3.40–3.20 m). The sediments were enriched with SiO2ter, which indicates an increased rate of slope erosion, and concretions of Fe-Mn occurring below this layer (JuIII) provide evidence for lowering of the water level and even desiccation. In the Holocene, the lacustrine period ended with the accumulation of coarse detrital gyttja (3.20–2.60 m). Palaeobotanical data indicate that the next group of sediments were deposited in the Late Subboreal and Subatlantic periods (2.60–0.0 cm, JuI/V–VII; sedge peat). Their properties were varied and related to hydrologic conditions, limited denudation, and vegetation succession. There was also a significant change in the trophic conditions of the water and consequently in the sediments of the kettle hole, which changed during the lacustrine period from basic to acid, and strongly acid in the surface layer. This reaction may be related to a change in the water regime as well as to human impact in the environment, which led to the colonization of the peat bog by Sphagnum moss.

Opis:
This work aimed to evaluate groundwater potability for the population through geochemical assessment methods on the example of aquifers in Krasnodar city. In 2016 and 2019, on the territory of Krasnodar city (Krasnodar region, Russian Federation), a detailed geochemical analysis of groundwater quality was performed based on a total of 6000 samples, 3000 samples per each year. Samples were taken from 30 wells located at depths of up to 450 m in the layers of Anthropogen and Neogene stages. Quantitative analysis of wells according to the average water quality parameters showed that in 15 wells, the water condition met the MAC (maximum allowable concentration) standards in all layers. Water abundance between the layers of the Quaternary and Cimmerian stages is seven times as different (p ≤ 0.001) towards the latter, the hardness between the same horizons is ten times as different (p ≤ 0.001) towards the Quaternary stage and three times as different (p ≤ 0.05) in terms of solid residue. Thus, the water hardness and water abundance index vary significantly between the vertical layers. A strong positive correlation between the solid residue and the hardness values (Pearson correlation 0.93, p ≤ 0.05), and a negative correlation between water abundance and solid residue values (Pearson correlation - 0.83, p ≤ 0.05), as well as between the hardness and water abundance values (Pearson correlation - 0.81, p ≤ 0.05) was recorded. These findings can be used for regions with similar deposits of rocks and aquifers.

Opis:
The geochemical analysis of biogenic sediments was used to reconstruct environmental conditions and the impact of human activity from a small mire geo-system in the Sandomierz Basin (Poland SE). Changes in the nature of selected geochemical indicators show a significant impact on the transformation of the mire during the early stages of human activity. It is reflected in the geochemical record by means of a high proportion of heavy metals – cadmium, lead and copper. Evident variability of main geochemical components concentration is also visible in a vertical record of analysed cores. This is a consequence of the sedimentary basin asymmetric configuration and the ensuing variable biogenic sedimentary succession.
Analizy geochemiczne stanową jedną z podstawowych metod badań osadów biogenicznych deponowanych w torfowiskach. W pracy wykorzystano analizę geochemiczną osadów biogenicznych z małego geosystemu torfowiskowego in the Sandomierz Basin (Poland SE) do odtworzenia warunków środowiskowych i wpływu działalności człowieka.

Opis:
Concentrations of a large set of major and trace elements, and Sr, Nd and Pb isotope ratios were measured in Holocene sediments cored in the western deep Black Sea in order to unravel: (1) the controls of element enrichment, and (2) sources of the detrital component. The transition of the basin from oxic to euxinic resulted in enrichment or depletion in a number of elements in the deep-sea sediments. Authigenic Fe enrichment appears to depend on the amount of Fe mobilized from the sediment through the benthic redox shuttle mechanism and free H2S in the water column (degree of “euxinization”). Manganese enrichment is controlled by diagenetic reactions within the sediment: the dissolution of Mn minerals, Mn2+ diffusion upward and reprecipitation. Barium enrichment is also controlled by diagenetic reactions, sulfate reduction and methanogenesis, that take place above and below the sulfate-methane transition, respectively. The major part of V, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cr, Mo, Cd and Sb is inferred to have co-precipitated with Fe in the euxinic deep waters and to have been incorporated into authigenic Fe-sulfides. Basin reservoir effect additionally influences the Mo enrichment. The U enrichment is interpreted to have a different origin in the two organic-rich stratigraphic units (II and I). It is inferred to be: (i) at the expense of the U inventory of the deepwater pool and a result of inorganic reduction of U at euxinic conditions in the lower Unit II; and (ii) at the expense of the U inventory of the surface water pool and a result of biogenic uptake and transfer to the sediment by the plankton in the upper Unit I. The high field strength elements are closely linked to the detrital component and their depletion in the organic-rich sediments reflects a dilution of the detrital component by the biogenic one. The enrichments of REE, Sn and Th are likely controlled by adsorption on clay minerals. Sr-Nd-Pb isotope compositions of the alumino-silicate component of the studied sediments are relatively uniform. They are most likely controlled by riverine suspended matter supplied mainly in the NW Black Sea (Danube Delta) and transported southward by marine currents, and to a lesser degree by suspended matter from the small rivers draining SE Bulgaria and NW Turkey. Wind-blown dust from the Sahara Desert appears to have a minor contribution to the alumino-silicate component of the sediments. The slight shift in the Pb isotopes in Unit I upper layers is possibly caused by the addition of anthropogenic Pb.

Opis:
There are two arsenical pyrite (As-FeS2mineralization zones cropping out in the Podwiśniówka and Wiśniówka Duża quarries where quartzites and quartzitic sandstones have been extracted for over a century. A large amount of pyrite in the Wiśniówka siliciclastics is unusual in the hard rock mining throughout the world. The pyritiferous beds contain a variety of REE-bearing minerals, including a crandallite series of aluminum-phosphate-sulfate (APS) minerals, e.g., predominant goyazite SrHAl3[(PO4)2(OH)6] with subordinate gorceixite BaHAl3[(PO4)2(OH)6] and very occasional crandallite CaHAl3[(PO4)2(OH)6]. By contrast, the other REE-phosphate minerals, e.g., xenotime YPO4, bur particularly monazite CePO4 occur in a lesser amount. Goyazite prevails somewhat in the Podwiśniówka beds whereas xenotime in the Wiśniówka Duża beds. Of the other REE-bearing minerals, bastnäsite REECO3(F,OH), florencite (REE)Al3(PO4)2(OH)6 and synchysite CaCe[CO3]2F occur in trace amounts. Interestingly, the quite common phosphate minerals, i.e., wavellite (Al.3[(OH,F)3|(PO4)2]×5H2O and variscite Al[PO4]×2H2O) are depleted in REEs with only Ce attaining 0.09 wt.% as documented by an electron-probe microanalysis. In contrast to quartzites/quartzitic sandstones, carbonaceous clayey-silty shales and bentonites/tuffites are distinctly enriched in REE-bearing minerals. This diversity is also mirrored in the mean total REE concentrations varying from 204 to 314 mg/kg, in clayey-silty shales and bentonites, attaining 457 mg/kg in some Podwiśniówka shale beds. Results of this and the previous petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical studies have indicated that REE-bearing minerals formed generally along with As-rich pyrite, nacrite/dickite and probably TiO2 polymorphs as a result of multiphase hydrothermal vent activity that took place in the Wiśniówka Late Cambrian sedimentary basin. This evidence is also backed up by the values of LREENASC/HREENASC (1.44–1.75) and Eu/EuNASC (1.24–1.30) coefficients in the clayey-silty shales. This positive Eu anomaly (31.20) points to the formation of REE-bearing minerals in a reducing environment.
