Opis:
Most vehicles are powered by internal combustion engines. Due to the nature of their operation they emit, among others, carbon dioxide which contributes to the greenhouse effect. CO2 production is strictly correlated with fuel consumption. The article presents the results of road tests of a passenger car with a spark-ignition engine meeting the Euro 6 emission norm. The test vehicle was equipped with a classic exhaust gas aftertreatment system – a three-way catalytic converter. The aim of the study was to verify the impact of the cruise control use on the vehicle fuel consumption. The measurements were based on Portable Emission Measurement System type mobile equipment for exhaust emission tests. The tests were carried out in real driving conditions travelling on an express way. Test drives took place on a route with variable topographic profile. Three test drives with different speeds were carried out, but the aim was to obtain an average speed of 130 km/h.

Opis:
With the invention of specialized, portable research equipment, construction of which enabled road tests of vehicles, it has become possible to verify benefits ensuing from application of eco-driving rules outside the laboratory – the test stand measurements. Test of the vehicles’ operation in terms of ecology are essential especially in case of toxicity of exhaust gases in dynamic, transient conditions of engine operation. Despite the attempt to reflect those conditions in dynamic research tests, it is not possible for fully reconstruct real conditions of operation of vehicles of different homologation categories. Due to this fact in recent years, the biggest research potential in automotive industry has been focused right on the road tests of vehicles in real traffic conditions. The article presents the results of measurements of exhaust emissions of passenger car in real traffic conditions. The aim of this study was to initial verification how the driving style influences on the carbon dioxide emissions from vehicle engine and fuel consumption. The determinants were the measurements of the concentration of CO2 emitted to the atmosphere from the power unit of the tested vehicle. In the measurements, a portable exhaust emission analyser was used.

A novel approach to modelling of motor vehicle operation by employing special test cycles threated as realizations of the stochastic process of vehicle velocity is presented. The families of test cycles were designed to simulate driving conditions in street congestion, urban, extra-urban, and high-speed traffic. The data necessary for the development of test cycles was obtained in the empirical investigations conducted in real road traffic. The recorded velocity time-histories were analysed in the time, frequency, and process value domains. Fragments of the velocity vs. time curves, representative for the considered driving conditions, were selected to design test cycles. The statistical examination of those test cycles demonstrated that individual process realizations are similar to each other and to all the process realizations recorded during the empirical tests.

The climate of our planet is changing, which, scientists believe, is caused by the production of greenhouse gases (GHG). To stabilize the concentrations of those gases in the atmosphere, it is necessary to decrease their production. Since transport is one of the major sources of GHG emissions, the most obvious solution is to decrease fuel consumption by vehicles. The amount of fuel used by a vehicle depends directly on the force of driving resistance, including rolling resistance and air resistance. The aim of the article is to indicate one of the easiest possibilities of decreasing these resistances. A small change in the shape of a vehicle’s frontal area leads to a significant reduction in air resistance.

This dissertation shows the analysis of the selected indicators of the work of a passenger vehicle drivetrain designated with the use of the Road Load Engine Simulator. In a digital simulation, an internal – combustion engine is saved in a form of numerical speed characteristics in the computers memory. Basing on a virtual vehicle, some indicators of the drivetrain of a passenger vehicle have been determined, while driving with five electronic throttle inclination regulator settups. The simulation results of e.g., throttle repeal speeds and fuel consumtion are summarized in a tabular and graphic form and some of them are expressed per 100 kilometer of the distance covered. Both synthetic and real driving cycles were analyzed during the study and their influence on the egines fuel consumption was also shortly described.

Opis:
Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have an increasing presence in passenger transport segment. They have been designed to minimize energy consumption and pollutant emission. However, the actual performance of HEVs depends on the dynamic conditions in which they are used, and vehicle speed is one of the key factors. A lot of excess emission and fuel consumption can be attributed to rapid changes of vehicle speed, i.e. accelerations and decelerations. On the other hand, dynamic driving favours energy recovery during braking. This study examines the relationship between HEVs speed, pollutant emission and fuel consumption. The considerations were based on the results of testing vehicles in WLTC and NEDC driving cycles, performed on a chassis dynamometer. The test objects were two light-duty passenger vehicles, one with series-parallel, gasoline-electric hybrid system and the other, used as a reference, with conventional spark-ignition engine. Both vehicles had similar technical parameters and combustion engines supplied with gasoline. The driving cycles were divided into several parts according to the speed range. For each part, pollutant emission and fuel consumption were determined and appropriate values of selected parameters of driving pattern were calculated. Combining the results of empirical research and calculated parameters allowed to obtain characteristics. Their analysis provided valuable insight into the impact of driving pattern on actual emission and fuel consumption of HEV.

Opis:
Fuel consumption achieved in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) could be 50% lower than the fuel consumption in real driving conditions and in the case of emissions of regulated toxic compounds the differences could even be much greater. In order to bring the results achieved in official tests closer to real life figures, the European Commission introduced in 2017 the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), which replaced the NEDC. In this article the results of fuel consumption and exhaust emissions for 3 cars fitted with engines of the same displacement but with direct and indirect gasoline injection, determined according to the NEDC and WLTC were presented. The results show that the effect of driving cycle on the fuel consumption is equivocal - for one car, fuel consumption was higher in the WLTC; for the other one in the NEDC; and for the third one, fuel consumption achieved in both driving cycles was practically the same. Emissions of regulated exhaust compounds, except for THC, obtained in the WLTC were higher than in the NEDC driving cycle.

Opis:
The paper presents results of examination of pollutant emissions and fuel consumption at tests simulating the real conditions of operation of a passenger car. The examination was carried out with the use of PIMOT simulation driving tests developed at the Automotive Industry Institute (PIMOT) on the grounds of analyses of motorcar velocity processes empirically recorded in the conditions of driving the car in urban traffic congestions, urban traffic without congestions, extra-urban traffic, and high-speed traffic (on motorways and fast roads). The pollutant emission and fuel consumption tests were performed on a vehicle chassis dynamometer, where a Honda Civic car with a spark-ignition engine was used as a test specimen. The scope of the examination covered the emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, and carbon dioxide. The unrepeatability of the pollutant specific distance emission and the operating fuel consumption values determined was evaluated with the use of the coefficient of variation of the results of measurement of specific quantities. Significant unrepeatability was revealed in the results of measurements of the specific distance emission of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides, while the unrepeatability of the results of measurements of carbon dioxide emission and the operating fuel consumption was relatively low. Characteristic curves of the pollutant specific distance emission and the operating fuel consumption as functions of the average vehicle velocity were also determined at the PIMOT tests. The characteristic curves plotted were found to be consistent with the dependences determined on the grounds of the databases incorporated in specialist software packages, such as INFRAS or COPERT.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań emisji zanieczyszczeń i zużycia paliwa w testach symulujących rzeczywiste warunki użytkowania samochodu osobowego. Do badań wykorzystano testy jezdne PIMOT, opracowane w Przemysłowym Instytucie Motoryzacji. Badano emisję tlenku węgla, węglowodorów, tlenków azotu i dwutlenku węgla. Do oceny niepowtarzalności wyznaczonych wartości emisji drogowej zanieczyszczeń oraz eksploatacyjnego zużycia paliwa wykorzystano współczynnik zmienności wyników pomiarów poszczególnych wielkości. Stwierdzono znaczną niepowtarzalność wyników pomiarów emisji drogowej tlenku węgla, węglowodorów i tlenków azotu, natomiast stosunkowo małą emisji drogowej dwutlenku węgla i eksploatacyjnego zużycia paliwa.

In Poland, the number of vehicles owned per capita is systematically increasing. There is also a noticeable increase in traffic in large urban agglomerations. This creates a number of problems, such as difficulties in finding a parking spot. Then it becomes necessary to search for a long time to stop, which is correlated with higher emission of harmful substances and energy consumption. The aim of the work is a multi-criteria analysis of the selection of a parking spot at a shopping center focused on travel times, pollutant emissions and fuel consumption. In addition, consideration was given to the selection of the optimal parking spot. The tests were carried out in Real Driving Conditions similar to Real Driving Emissions testing. The procedure, currently used as an extension of the type-approval tests, reflects the actual exhaust emissions from vehicles more accurately than tests under laboratory conditions. Specialized PEMS (Portable Emissions Measurement System) apparatus was used for the measurements.

Opis:
A contemporary road vehicle (RV) is a rather complex system, consisting of a large number of subsystems, assemblies, units, and elements (parts). While operating, an RV interacts with the environment, and its elements interact with each other. Consequently, the properties (parameters) of these elements change in the process - hardness, roughness, size, relative position, gapping, etc. A partial solution to the presented problems can be the search for a technique for assessing the RV technical condition by a generalised criterion, which is quite sensitive to changes in the technical state. One of these criteria may be fuel consumption in litres per 100 kilometres. This paper investigates the possibilities of using the fuel consumption indicator as a criterion for assessing the technical condition of the vehicle and the vehicle maintenance and repair technologies have been generalised to obtain a given technical solution. Thus, the possibility of using the fuel consumption indicator as a criterion for assessing the technical condition of the vehicles was explored using the Volkswagen Touran 1.9 TDI operating in urban conditions using a driving cycle. A clear correlation between the fuel consumption and the service lifetime of the vehicle has been established; therefore, it depends on the frequency and quality of the maintenance and repair (MR). The vehicle MR technology has been generalised to obtain a specified technical solution. The process of creating an RV MR Technology model is implemented based on an iterative approach (repetition) with the possibility to specify their features.

Opis:
Efficient fuel consumption in the world is essential in automotive technology development due to the increase in vehicle usage and the decrease in global oil production. Several studies have been conducted to increase fuel consumption savings, Fuel Cells (FCs), the application of alternative energy vehicles and the Engine Control Unit (ECU) system. FCs do not require oil energy to propel the vehicle, so this technology promises to reduce energy consumption and emissions. However, this research still leaves problems. FCs are susceptible to short circuit hazards, and ownership costs are very high. Alternative energy applications produce less power, less responsive acceleration, and insufficient energy sources to enter mass production. The ECU application still has an orientation toward achieving stoichiometry values, so the increase in fuel efficiency has the potential to be improved. Driving behavior is a variable that has a close relationship with fuel consumption efficiency. However, research on driving behavior is only studied for implementation in autonomous car-following technologies, safety systems, charging needs characteristic of electric vehicles, emission controls, and display images on invehicle information systems. Meanwhile, research on driving behavior as a control system to improve fuel efficiency has not been carried out. To that end, this study proposes the use of driving behavior for a newly designed control system to improve fuel efficiency. The control system in this research is a prototype model to be assessed using the Fuel Saving Index (FSI) analysis. An artificial neural network is used to help the recognition of driving behavior. The results showed that the newly designed control system was categorized on scale IV of FSI. On this scale, the power generated by the engine is quite optimal when it is in the eco-scheme driving behavior. The driving behavior control system can significantly improve the efficiency of fuel consumption. Air to Fuel Ratio (AFR) is achieved above the stoichiometric value.
