Zaproponowano metodę wyznaczania krytycznego współczynnika intensywności naprężeń materiału na ściskanych próbkach o przekroju kołowym z centralnie umieszczonym otworem w postaci rombu. Proces zniszczenia próbki postępuje od wierzchołku karbu typu V. Znając wartość obciążenia niszczącego oraz standardowe stałe materiałowe oblicza się krytyczny współczynnik intensywności naprężeń wykorzystując odkształceniowe kryterium pękania oparte na modelu Dugdale’a. Zagadnienie koncentracji naprężeń w otoczeniu wierzchołków otworu rozwiązano metodą osobliwych równań całkowych.
The method of determination of critical SIF of brittle and quasi-brittle material is presented. For the splitting cylindrical specimen with central diamond-shaped hole the stress intensity factors were calculated for arbitral vertex angle. The values of critical SIF was obtained considering the deformation fracture criterion based on Dugdale model of failure with assumption that fracture process zone starts from notch tip.

This paper deals with an investigation of temperature and hydrogen concentration influence on Ignalina NPP RBMK-1500 unit 2 reactor fuel channel tube material - Zr-2.5Nb zirconium alloy (TMT-2) mechanical and fracture toughness characteristics. Two types of specimens were used in this study - tensile and compact semi-natural specimens. Testing temperatures were selected from 20 to 300°C that correspond various operating regimes of the reactor. Made-up hydrogen saturated specimens were tested at hydrogen concentration levels from 52 up to 140 ppm m order to examine hydrogen influence on mechanical and fracture toughness characteristics of the alloy. Dependence of fracture toughness to various mechanical characteristics of the alloy was analysed. Investigation has shown correlation of stress intensity factor Kc to modified plasticity criterion of the alloy.

Introduction and objective. Epidemiological assessment of maxillofacial fractures carried out by a given specialized centre may constitute valuable material for comparison with other regions of Poland and the European Union. This material could help standardize the present methods of treating craniofacial skeleton dislocations, and plan appropriate financial resources both for specialized treatment of such fractures and fractures that require multidisciplinary care. Moreover, the frequency of complicated maxillofacial fractures leading to residual disability and circumstances in which fracture occurred may be useful for the Social Security authorities. Materials and methods. This study is a continuation of research on maxillofacial traumatology carried by the Maxillofacial Department of the Medical University in Wrocław, Lower Silesia. Since 1956, a statistical review of maxillofacial fractures has been kept in 5 or 10-year periods. Statistical analysis of this kind is useful in indentifying the frequency of the phenomenon, taking suitable treatment precautions, verifying treatment methods, and analyzing costs and losses incurred as a result of absence at work. Sociological aspect of such studies includes indicating sources of socially adverse phenomena, i.e. violence or alcohol abuse. The studies were based on clinical documentation of 937 patients, where dependencies between chosen parameters were identified. As a basic statistical analysis of variable interdependence the χ2 test of independence was applied. Conclusions. Lately, there have been more maxillofacial fractures resulting from civilization changes. Simultaneously, there are new treatment methods and significant progress has been made regarding materials that are used in these treatments.

Work to extend Gurney’s model for fragment velocity to predict blast impulse is ongoing by means of analytical calculations, based on gas and casing dynamics, with comparisons to available experimental data. The issue of early case fracture, with release of explosive gases thus retaining a greater degree of momentum, is also addressed. The method is based on that of G.I. Taylor and can include both case material compressive fow stress and explosive properties such as Chapman-Jouguet pressure. Comparisons between this new Taylor-based theory and blast data from studies of cased charges are shown. The potential effects on blast output of casing dynamic material properties appear considerable. Dynamic testing of case metals is needed to confrm the yield stresses implied by the blast data. It is expected that this method will be useful to the researcher in a number of roles.

In this paper the results of the modification process of alloy AlSi11 as well as the influence of modification for structure and impact resistance have been presented. The investigation revealed that the modification of the AlSi11 silumin with the addition 0,05 - 0,4% AlSr10 and 0,1 - 0,2% AlB4 simultaneously provided the advantageous refinement of the α-phase as well as the change of the morphology of the eutectic silicon from the lamellar into the fibrous one. The change resulted in a relevant increase in the impact resistance of the alloy and the widening of the plastic area of the fracture of the silumin samples.

This paper presents the results of mechanical tests carried out on two different commercially available cobalt alloys applied in dental prosthetics for the production of frame dentures. The test samples were obtained by the method of investment casting using as a charge pure primary materials and pure primary materials mixed with various additions of process scrap (25, 50, and 75%). The tests showed that the alloys could not reach the mechanical properties reported by the manufacturer in either case. In the case of the alloy without the addition of tantalum, the general conclusion was that both the plastic and strength properties decreased with increasing amounts of the introduced process scrap. The mechanical properties (mainly elongation) of the alloy containing Ta reached the highest values in the samples containing 75% of the process scrap. Examinations of fractures carried out by SEM have revealed their varied character – ductile or transcrystalline. All of the samples tested showed the presence of dendrites and solidification areas, with shrinkage porosity occurring in the internal sample zones.

Every day human bones undergo different injuries resulting from public transport accidents, diseases or trauma. Consequently, they cause temporary or constant patients disability or even death. Fractures happen not only to elderly people suffering from osteoporosis, but also more and more frequently to young people, who got some injuries as a result of life style, e.g. doing sports. The desire to enhance the physical well being and quality of patients' life, who got some injury causes constant development of medical devices for osteosynthesis. In the case of complicated fractures, in which plaster treatment is not sufficient, surgical treatment and applying implant are indispensable. The aim of the article is to present two case studies on intramedullary nails. The first one concerns a method of osteosynthesis for a patient, who was injured in an accident. The second one presents the failure of the implanted intramedullary nail. The research included evaluation of the type of fracture and the analysis of microstructure, chemical composition and hardness of the implant materials.

The paper presents a discussion on the occurrence of defects in the circumferential flange of steel plate. The numerous flange face defects have been analysed. The types of defects have been selected and categorized using an experimental planning procedure involving 600 samples for 24 different process variants, considering variables such as material, hole diameter, tool size and tool position. The analysis of experimental results enabled to determine of the optimal values of process parameters to minimize the occurrence of defects. Furthermore, the influence of individual parameters on the quality of the flange surface has been carried out to obtain the process parameters’ impact using statistical hypotheses. As a result, it was possible to develop rules which will be helpful in the design process, especially important when changing the material to be processed.

Opis:
Introduction. Supracondylar fracture of the humerus is the most common type of distal humeral fracture in children. Either operative or non-operative treatment depends on Gartland’s classification and neurovascular damage. There is still room for discussion on which Kirschner pin’s configuration should be chosen – crossed pinning or lateral pinning. Aim. Our study aimed to compare clinical results of treating supracondylar humeral fractures in children with cross and lateral pinning. We also aimed to assess the correlation between sociodemographic data and clinical results. Materials and methods. 75 patients aged less than 18 years, operated for supracondylar humeral fracture between September 2010 and June 2021 were retrospectively analysed. Two treatment modalities were studied for comparison – crossed pinning and lateral pinning. Results. Crossed pinning was performed in 62 patients (82.7%) and lateral pinning in 13 patients (17.3%). The mean age during trauma was 6.83 years (2-14). There was a significantly higher incidence (p = 0.03) of current complaints in the group treated from the side compared to the group treated crosswise (54% vs 32% of patients reported current complaints, respectively). There were no relevant differences observed between the type of fixation and the following studied parameters: current VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) pain score, Baumann angle of the operated limb, flexion deficit in the elbow joint of the operated limb, presence of current neurological complications, satisfaction with the current function of the limb, Flynn criteria, and Mayo Elbow Score. Conclusions. The discussion in the literature addressing the superiority of lateral or crossed pinning of supracondylar humeral fractures in children still exists. Both methods provide excellent clinical and functional results.
Materiał i metody. Analizie retrospektywnej poddano 75. chorych w wieku poniżej 18 lat, operowanych z powodu złamania nadkłykciowego kości ramiennej w okresie od września 2010 do czerwca 2021. W celu porównania zbadano dwie metody leczenia – stabilizację metodą od boku oraz na krzyż. Wyniki. Stabilizację metodą na krzyż wykonano u 62 chorych (82,7%), od boku u 13 (17,3%). Średni wiek w czasie urazu wynosił 6,83 lat (2-14). Wystąpiła istotnie większa częstość (p = 0,03) aktualnych dolegliwości w grupie leczonej metodą od boku w porównaniu z grupą leczoną metodą krzyżową (odpowiednio 54% vs. 32% chorych). Nie zaobserwowano istotnych różnic pomiędzy rodzajem stabilizacji, a następującymi badanymi parametrami: aktualna ocena bólu w skali VAS (Visual Analogue Scale), kąt Baumanna, deficyt zgięcia w stawie łokciowym operowanej kończyny, obecność aktualnych powikłań neurologicznych, zadowolenie z aktualnej funkcji kończyny, kryteria Flynna i Mayo Elbow Score. Wnioski. W piśmiennictwie nadal trwa dyskusja na temat wyższości bocznego lub krzyżowego stabilizowania złamań nadkłykciowych kości ramiennej u dzieci. Obie metody zespalania dają dobre wyniki kliniczne i funkcjonalne.

The present paper focuses on the shear strength exhibited by rocks and soils when sliding along dry and wet surfaces, with this mechanism of failure being strongly related to the water lubrication phenomenon. It is well known that the frictional behaviour of geomaterials requires multiscale investigation. Under this perspective, experimental evidence of both friction at the grain scale (i.e. interparticle friction) and friction along sliding surfaces of rock and granular soil samples (i.e. surface friction) are analysed by using data from the literature. The review is addressed at linking different scales, stating the differences between rocks and soils in terms of frictional response to sliding and trying to point out still open problems for the research.

Opis:
Understanding thorax kinematics and rib breaking mechanisms in conditions of oblique and lateral impact is crucial in safety systems development. To increase knowledge level on this subject, simulation and experimental tests are necessary. The purpose of this study was to obtain single rib kinematics in the case of oblique and lateral impact conditions using numerical simulation approach. Methods: Two impact tests using human body model of a 50th percentile man (THUMS v4.0.1 AM50) were performed in LS-Dyna R7.1.1. Impactor was a rigid cylinder with a diameter of 152 mm, and velocity equal to 6.7 m/s. Impact angle measured to sagittal plane was 30 and 90°, respectively in oblique and lateral impact case. Results: Kinematics of ribs from 3rd to 6th were analyzed. Results shown significant similarities between oblique impact and kinematics of ribs tested in frontal impact conditions in the literature, with maximal costochondral joint displacement relatively to costovertebral joint varying from 65.4 mm (3rd rib) to 82.0 mm (5th rib). Deformation of rib in lateral impact conditions was different than during oblique impact test, with distinctive “flattening” approximately in the middle of the rib. Maximal relative displacement varies from 16.4 mm (6th rib) to 26.6 mm (5th rib) and its location depends on the analyzed rib. Conclusions: Oblique impact scenario may be simulated for the single rib on an experimental way using set-up of the frontal impact. Experimental simulation of the lateral impact for the single rib should not use the same set-up, as the kinematics analysis showed significant differences between simulated cases.

Fatigue is one of the main failure modes in marine structures, and it is caused by the strong cyclic characteristics of the loads they support. This failure mode is amplified in areas of high stress concentration, such as at the intersection of primary and secondary elements. In this paper, a two-phase study is proposed that compares numerical and experimental results using a digital image correlation technique. The described procedure establishes selection, design, and scantling criteria and provides recommendations for the design of the transverse structure using specimens with different geometries. These geometries correspond to different designs for the transverse primary structure that use a longitudinal secondary stiffener with variable thickness and longitudinal spacing to transverse in a dynamic and quasi-static regime. The stress state for this regime is calculated based on the biaxiality indication concept, which uses the fatigue phenomenon (safety factor and sensitivity curves) and fracture mechanics (parameters of the Paris crack propagation law, correlation value, and law of variation of the stress intensity factor).
