    The reflections presented in this paper are focused on the problem of the conflict that takes places at the point of contact of two cultures during social interventions in the communities of foreigners residing in Poland. That is why three research perspectives have been presented. The first one is an analysis of the legal solutions pertaining to the acquiring of the status of a legal alien. The second aspect of the research is connected with the features of the institutional forms of social support for foreigners. In the further area the indicators of cultural differences of the investigated group have been discussed and it has been attempted to define the potential areas of conflict. The scientific exploration was aimed to specify to what extent cultural differences condition the process of the foreigners’ adaptation to a new socio-cultural reality. Furthermore, an attempt was made to answer the question whether the institutions intended to help foreigners can constitute an area of compromise. For this aim the differences between the levels of expectations represented by the administrative and social services and the foreigners themselves have been shown.

    Od kilkunastu lat obserwowana jest znacząca tendencja wzrostowa ruchów migracyjnych do Polski. Mimo, że obecność obcokrajowców w naszym kraju jest zjawiskiem coraz bardziej powszechnym, to jednak wciąż stosunkowo nieznanym i niezbadanym. Szczególnie ciekawe wydają się postawy Polaków wobec cudzoziemców. Celem niniejszej pracy jest prezentacja wyników badań dotyczących opinii na temat obecności obcokrajowców w Poznaniu, przeprowadzonych w Poznaniu w 2011 r.
    The presence of foreigners in Poland is yet a relatively unexplored phenomenon and an interesting research area. There has been an upward trend towards an increase of their population recently (within the last couple of years). It is self-evident that vast majority of migration is into cities. Therefore, the activityof foreigners contributes both to the social and structural changes and raises several questions about their socio-spatial assimilation. The attitudes of Poles towards aliens seem to be particularlyinteresting as well as ambiguous. Research and studies suggest that in large part the attitudes of Poles towards foreigners result from ethnic stereotypes and ignorance of other cultures. Hence, the signs of xenophobia are sometimes observed. However, more and more powerful process of globalization have been decreasing the importance of these stereotypes. There is an increasing interest in the problem of migration in Poland as well as a greater awareness and “openness to the world” shaped byper sonal experience, travels and media. This article aims to present a studyon the opinions and attitudes of the residents of the cityof Poznan (Poland) towards foreigners. The issues of the relationship in the direct vicinityand dayto dayhuman intercourse with foreigners in the Polish societyis going to be examined (e.g., the respondents were asked to identifythe characteristics associated with the selected groups of foreigners). Moreover, the research aims to indicate and assess factors that maycause aversion to foreigners. The data and information gathered with the use of the questionnaire will be presented in the conference speech. This will show the extent to which residents of Poznań are willing to accept foreigners in their own environment, including the question of their integration and isolation.

    Opis:
    Problem obcokrajowców w Niemczech, a przede wszystkim zmniejszania się liczby Niemców w Niemczech, jest problemem, który nie zostanie w najbliższym czasie rozwiązany. Jego korzenie sięgają lat 60. XX w., gdy do RFN zaproszono gastarbeiterów, dzięki którym Niemcy przeżyły prawdziwy bum gospodarczy. Skutkiem napływu obcej siły roboczej były zmiany w strukturze społecznej i wyznaniowej kraju, z widocznymi do dnia dzisiejszego konsekwencjami – 25 proc. mieszkańców RFN ma obce pochodzenie, co musi rodzić pytania o naturalizację i o to, kto może być Niemcem. Chcąc utrzymać potencjał gospodarczy RFN na przynajmniej niezmienionym poziomie, należy zagwarantować ciągły dopływ siły roboczej, dający pozytywne impulsy gospodarce. Proces ten powiązany jest z napływem imigrantów, którzy w znaczny sposób obciążają system opieki socjalnej RFN. Jednak w wielu przypadkach inwestycje w imigrantów zwracają się po 5–10 latach, a nawet się samofinansują poprzez dodatkowe dochody z VAT (konsumpcja indywidualna) i składek na ubezpieczenia socjalne. Warunkiem korzystnego oddziaływania obcej siły roboczej na gospodarkę jest stosunkowo szybka integracja imigrantów na rynku pracy.
    The question of foreigners in Germany, and primarily – the problem of a decreasing number of Germans in Germany – are hardly to be solved in the nearest future. They are rooted in the 1960s, when the so-called ‘Gastarbeiters’ (guest workers) were invited to come to Germany. It is they who contributed to that the country enjoyed a real economic boom. Still, the influx of foreign workforce resulted in a change in the social and religious structures of the state, bringing consequences that are clearly visible today – 25% of the inhabitants of the FRG are of foreign origin, which naturally must lead to asking questions about naturalization and who can be considered German. Endeavouring to maintain the economic potential of the FRG, at least on an unchanged level, the government must secure a continuous inflow of workforce, which is expected to yield positive economic impulses. This process is connected with an influx of immigrants who – to a considerable extent – become a burden to the system of social welfare of the state. However, in many cases, return on investment in immigrants comes after 5-10 years, even if only in the form of self-financing thanks to additional revenues form VAT (individual consumption) and social insurance contributions. Still, a condition behind beneficial impacting of foreign workforce on economy is a relatively quick integration of immigrants in the labor market.
