Opis:
In the present day it is a must to know at least one foreign language. Most people choose English since it has become a global language and is present in almost every field of life. Researchers say that the best moment to start is in the childhood, yet they emphasize the fact that teaching very young children is challenging and needs to be planned with attention. This text aims to describe the specificity of teaching English to young learners and discusses some basic aspects of conducting child-friendly lessons together with some benefits of this approach.

Opis:
Wady wymowy niejednokrotnie mają wpływ na funkcjonowanie ucznia w szkole. Często mogą spowodować wystąpienie trudności i niechęć do wypowiadania się przez uczniów w obcym języku podczas zajęć. W konsekwencji przyczynia się to do obniżenia motywacji do nauki języka obcego. Spektrum spotykanych nieprawidłowości artykulacyjnych jest bardzo szerokie. Wśród najczęściej występujących wymienia się m.in.: sygmatyzm, rotacyzm, mowę bezdźwięczną, nosowanie itp.

The aim of this study was to validate a 24-item TEPID (Teachers of EFL Preparedness to Include Dyslexics) scale measuring the beliefs of 546 pre-service and in-service teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) across three countries (Cyprus, Greece, and Poland) on their preparedness to include learners with dyslexia in mainstream foreign language (FL) classes. Principal component analysis of the scale led to a two-factor structure, that is, knowledge and self-efficacy in implementing inclusive instructional practices with dyslexic EFL learners, and stance towards inclusion. The analysis of measurement invariance confirmed the generalizability of the TEPID across all subgroups and allowed valid comparisons between factor variances and covariances. The scale is a useful tool for investigating perceived teacher preparedness to include dyslexic learners and variables that influence TEPID, comparing the results across countries, and designing tailored pre-service and in-service training schemes on inclusion.

The article reports the findings of a retrospective study which looked at Hungarian learners’ attitudes towards Russian people, the Russian language and teachers of Russian. Mixed-methods sequential explanatory design (Ivankova, Creswell, & Stick, 2006) was applied which combines the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data in two consecutive phases. First person accounts turned out to be a useful and relevant resource for exploring individual differences in proficiency in Russian. Differences in attitudes appear to play a role in the developmental process, but to what extent this refers to attrition or non-acquisition is unclear.

The project LACE was built on theories of intercultural competences (Chen and Starosta 2005; Byram 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002) with an objective to deliver some evidence to form a basis for devising appropriate policies in the European multilingual space.

Foreign languages learning is becoming more and more popular. A lot of people decides to start learning but in many cases some barriers exist. In small towns or villages there are no qualified teachers. This problem can be solved by remote teaching. Last time it is a popular method to make language lessons via voice communicators. Such a method should be supported by another tool to send tasks to do to students or to examine them. A portal to support learning foreign languages and to ensure communication between teacher and students was created by authors. The goal of the paper is to present its capabilities and to verify its usefulness.

Opis:
The aim of the present study was to find the phonological errors on segmental level involving selected consonant sounds which are produced by Kimakunduchi speaking English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners in Zanzibar. Specifically, the study sought to provide the evidence of cross-linguistic influence involving phonological transfer on segmental level. The study employed two sampling techniques: stratified and random sampling. The data for this study were collected from three secondary schools located at Makunduchi district in Unguja Island – Makunduchi, Kusini, and Kizimkazi secondary schools – using the oral interview and observation. The data were analyzed with the use of both qualitative and quantitative research approach. The study was guided by the transfer theory which was one of the components of Selinker’s (1992: 209) interlanguage theory. The findings revealed that, to a large extent, native Kimakunduchi speakers of EFL tended to transfer the sounds existing in their L1, or even in Kiswahili, into English. The transfer was done because of the nonexistence of the particular sound in the students’ native language or because of the discrepancy of spelling and pronunciation in English language. The study concludes that an articulation of vowels is more complex compared to consonants because of their absence in the first language (L1) or because of the confusion of spelling and pronunciation in English as FL. Thus, the study recommended that serious measures should be taken from both education holders to make sure that the learners could be able to pronounce English phonemes/words correctly.

Opis:
The article aims to raise the issue of acquiring a specific vocabulary in a foreign language, which is a vital part of specific language education. Insufficient knowledge of a specific vocabulary has an influence on its future use in professional life, and can lead to the production of inadequate statements, as well as misunderstandings. In research based on a questionnaire with open and closed questions, 80 students of Economics and European Studies at the Koszalin University of Technology shared their opinions about the most common problems they face while learning specific vocabulary. Analysis of the research and the resulting conclusions can be applied to the language teaching process in order to increase its efficiency. The study has indicated that the majority of students questioned had problems with specific vocabulary, and that learning English for Specific Purposes is much more difficult than learning General English. The most frequently repeated causes of this situation were problems with finding an accurate equivalent of a word and problems using the new vocabulary in its context.

The aim of the paper is to identify key areas as well as to offer an overview of significant topics that should be addressed within training for foreign language teachers, enabling them to use the educational potential of the German-Polish border region in intercultural foreign languages teaching. In order to achieve this goal, in the first part of the paper the main concepts of pupiloriented education in a border region will be described (i.e. cross-border cooperation, learner-orientation, region-orientation, participation, sustainability, and competence for successful living and communicating in a border region), as they give insights into the essential fields of knowledge and skills that should be aimed at in terms of teacher-oriented activities during the process of professionalisation. On this basis, in the second part of the article, concrete recommendations on priority topics within the professional development of foreign language teachers will be made, according to the specific educational potential of the German-Polish border region.

In relation to the two previous chapters whose main aim was to provide the range of theoretical issues concerning the field, this chapter is to scrutinize the matter in a more practical way. Therefore, the chapter then begins with the set of introductory issues describing the field of interest, which is presented by young children at the pre-school age in kindergarten context. Later on, some features characterizing the groups of children involved are provided in order to trace any potential obstacles to the subsequent observation. The following section, then, contains a brief description of the lessons which children took part in. Findings gathered on the basis of previous observation as well as conclusions and implications are to constitute the closing part of this chapter.
