Opis:
Labor market inflexibility has long been seen as an important factor with a negative influence on European labor markets. The article aims to present factors determining the flexibility of labor markets in OECD countries, with a special focus on “old” EU member states. The analysis covers both a traditional approach to labor market flexibility based on the relationship between real wages and productivity and an approach covering the institutional aspect of labor market flexibility. The first part of the study examines the growth of flexibility in real wages in relation to labor productivity. The authors make use of data applying to 22 OECD countries. Because economic integration took place in stages, the comparison of wage flexibility was made for two periods, 1970-1986 and 1987-2002. In the next part of the study, with the use of a composite labor market flexibility indicator-based on Strahl’s taxonomy-the authors present the diversification of labor market flexibility in EU countries. The eventual flexibility indicator is based on the following four institutional variables: part-time employment, trade union influence, tax system and compensation. The choice of variables for the labor market flexibility indicator was largely determined by limited access to data. Definitive annual figures for the variables in question were only available for the 1998-2003 period for 16 EU countries (EU-15 plus Poland). The study reveals that there is no significant relationship between real wages and labor productivity in most countries in Europe. However, wage flexibility in relation to labor productivity varies considerably from one country to another depending on the analyzed period. This applies to not only highly developed EU countries, but also the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. The results of the taxonomy confirm the widespread opinion that Great Britain has the highest labor market flexibility indicator. Denmark, Finland, Belgium and Poland, on the other hand, were classified into a group of countries with the lowest flexibility. Labor market inflexibility in Denmark, Finland and Belgium is additionally confirmed by research conducted by Blanchard and Wolfers (2000) and Dicks and Papadavid (2002).

Two mechanical methods have been developed for the characterization of the flexibility of protective gloves, a key factor affecting their degree of usefulness for workers. The principle of the first method is similar to the ASTM D 4032 standard relative to fabric stiffness and simulates the deformations encountered by gloves that are not tight fitted to the hand. The second method characterizes the flexibility of gloves that are worn tight fitted. Its validity was theoretically verified for elastomer materials. Both methods should prove themselves as valuable tools for protective glove manufacturers, allowing their existing products to be characterized in terms of flexibility and the development of new ones better fitting workers’ needs.

Purpose: The fundamental objective of this article is to discern whether business model maturity is perceived through the prism of the ability to deal with unexpected challenges, overcome unprecedented threats, and use emerging business opportunities (agility) or – perhaps – more as a feature of the organization, which makes a business model less vulnerable to unpredictable external changes or sets it in a better position to make it respond effectively to these changes (flexibility). Methodology: The reconnaissance of opinions requires the creation of a catalog of desiderata that significantly identify agility and flexibility. Theoretical and design layers will use a method of reconstruction and interpretation of the subject literature supported by a discussion within a group of deliberately selected experts. This will be reflected in a set of parameters, on the one hand, characteristic of the categories of agility and flexibility and, on the other hand, reflecting business model maturity. Findings: The conducted research allows us to state that mature business models – as implemented by the surveyed companies – are perceived rather through the prism of the strategic ability of enterprises to quickly adapt to unforeseen and sudden changes on the market (agility category). Originality: The article includes not only academic postulates of agility or flexibility but also practical tips that enable constructing guidelines for decision-makers and managers of the agricultural machinery sector. The study carries a charge of a theoretical and empirical study. It takes into account knowledge and expert experience.

Manufacturing companies in the 21st century will face unpredictable, high-frequency market changes, driven by global competition. The article presents a new concept of manufacturing systems – which address these challenges - known as Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (RMS). The concept began in 1999 at University of Michigan and is widely developed in many scientific publications. The paper first analyses main features of RSP. The next sections are devoted to analyze basic assumptions of RMS design and technical measures of RMS. Finally, the answer for the question if the RMS has the perspective of wide industrial implementations is discussed.

The awareness of the growing importance of the complexity in creating a new type of a modern enterprise strategy and in introducing changes within planning, control and organizational structures contributed to undertaking studies on relationships occurring between the complexity of a modern enterprise and its flexibility in the sector of industrial automation, as well as filling the gap relating to the cognitive impact of poor complexity management on the flexibility of the company. The main objective of the research work is to check whether there is an important relationship between the complexity of the business and its flexibility in the industrial automation sector. Quantification of the relationship between these two quantities – the complexity and flexibility – happened by the use of the Multidimensional Correspondence Analysis (MCA) and Perceptual Maps. The study which has been carried out indicated that the flexibility and complexity functions in the enterprise management rise, however, the knowledge of these issues is highly insufficient. The research discovered that the obstacles which hamper striking a balance between the flexibility and complexity in their advanced stages exert a devastating impact on the quality of the process management. Reducing the flexibility at its higher levels generates a context in which the market risk is enhanced. Companies characterised by improper flexibility management bear higher workforce costs and their processes of decision-making last longer. Methodical and systematized study of flexibility and complexity will decrease the destructive influence of the interaction between these two categories.

Collagens are major structural proteins of tendons, ligaments and other components of musculoskeletal tissues. Rare mutations in many of the genes, which encode for the collagen α-chains, result in serious musculoskeletal disorders, highlighting the importance of this protein family in the normal structure and function of musculoskeletal tissues. Since these rare mutations cause severe disorders, it has been proposed that a lack of biological redundancy exists within the collagen fibril, and that collagen-encoding genes are therefore ideal candidates for association with less severe exercise-related traits. This review identifies a number of collagen gene variants which are associated with various exercise-related traits. Based on the evidence outlined in this review, we propose that a general genetic continuum exists for collagen genes and their associated traits. At one end of this general continuum model, a single mutation within one or more collagen genes will result in severe Mendelian disorders. At the other end of the continuum, functional variants within these collagen genes collectively contribute to the aetiology of anomalous multifactorial connective tissue traits, which arise as a result of the interaction of genetic and non-genetic factors which modulate physiological responses to environmental stimuli.

In the paper the optimal robust vibration control of flexible rotor supported by the active magnetic bearings (AMBs) is investigated. The purpose of the control system is stabilization of the high speed rotor and effective control of the rotor vibration due to noncollocation, gyroscopic effects and model uncertainties. The noncollocation effect is considered and frequency modal analysis of the noncollocated AMBs system with gyroscopic effects is presented. The ž-Synthesis control is applied to stabilize the rigid and flexible critical frequency modes of the rotor, with emphasis structural and parametric uncer-tainty. The input and output signals in AMBs system are limited by the weighting functions. The singular value analysis is used to obtain therobust performances of the closed-loop system. The stable operation and good stiffness of the high speed rotor supported magnetically is reached. The dynamical behaviour of the AMBs rotor is evaluated in the range up to 21 000 rpm. The experimental tests show the effectiveness of the robust control system as well as good vibrations reduction and robustness of the designed controllers.

Creativity and flexibility are considered by many to be inextricably linked. However, the current literature does not offer a clear view about their relationship and flexibility is not a unitary construct in psychological research. In this work, I present a new theoretical approach that considers flexibility a recurrent property in and of the cognitive system and I argue that flexibility is best understood as a link in the variability–stability–flexibility pattern. Investigating this pattern and looking at the dynamic flow from variability to stability and then to flexibility in the functioning of the cognitive system can lead us to better grasp how the system arrives at novel solutions in creative problem solving.

Opis:
Średni wiek badanych to 34 lata (SD = 7,81). Wykorzystano Kwestionariusz elastyczności w radzeniu sobie (KERS-14), Kwestionariusz elastyczności poznawczej (KEP) oraz Skalę odczuwanego stresu (Perceived Stress Scale – PSS-10).WynikiU badanych strażaków występował istotny statystycznie związek między elastycznością w radzeniu sobie ze stresem i jej wymiarami a elastycznością poznawczą i jej wymiarami. Najsilniejszy pozytywny związek zaobserwowano pomiędzy elastycznością poznawczą i repertuarem strategii (r = 0,639, p < 0,001), najsłabszy – pomiędzy kontrolą poznawczą a refleksyjnością (r = 0,257, p = 0,009).
BackgroundFlexibility in coping with stress and cognitive flexibility are new constructs both in Polish and European psychological sciences. A person displaying flexibility in coping has a wide repertoire of remedial strategies, which he or she is able to change if the situation so requires, and which reflect on the strategies used, while a person displaying cognitive flexibility is ready to look for new ways to cope. The profession of a firefighter involves exposure to various stressors, and occupational stress can affect not only mental health, but also the quality of work performed. That is why flexibility in coping with stress and cognitive flexibility seem so important. The aim of the study was to perform empirical verification of the relationship between flexibility in coping and cognitive flexibility, as well as to determine their relationship with the stress perceived by the respondents.Material and MethodsOverall, 104 firefighters (males only) were qualified for the examination. The average age of the respondents was 34 years (SD = 7.81). The Flexibility in Coping with Stress Questionnaire (FCSQ-14), the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI) and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) were used.ResultsThere is a statistically significant relationship between flexibility in coping with stress and its dimensions, and cognitive flexibility and its dimensions, in the examined group of firefighters. The strongest positive relationship was observed between cognitive flexibility and repertoire (r = 0.639, p < 0.001), and the weakest between cognitive control and reflectivity (r = 0.257, p = 0.009). A statistically significant negative relationship was found between flexibility in coping with stress (r = –0.339, p = 0.001) and cognitive flexibility (r = –0.359, p < 0.001), and stress experienced by the respondents. There was no statistically significant relationship between reflectivity, which is a dimension of flexibility in coping with stress, and perceived stress.ConclusionsThere is a need to consider the possibility of including in the prevention programs addressed to firefighters the need to support subjective resources, which include flexibility in coping with stress and cognitive flexibility. The results also indicate the need to deepen research in order to better understand the constructs of flexibility in coping with stress and cognitive flexibility.

Research background: Organizations that function in the contemporary, competitive economy attribute the increased importance to employee loyalty, which translates, to a large extent, into commitment to work. A loyal employee, strongly associated with the organization, is its valuable asset. On the other hand, in the dynamically changing reality, organizations more often use the alternative, flexible forms of employment, which are not only a response to the needs of the organization, but also employees themselves. Purpose of the article: The purpose of the paper is to examine the relationship between employee loyalty to the employer and the form of employment. Methods: The paper presents the results of research conducted by means of a diagnostic survey with the use of a questionnaire among 569 employees of manufacturing and service enterprises operating on the Polish market. Empirical data were collected from December 2015 to January 2016. The research process was based on the grounded theory and statistical analyses were conducted by means of the SPSS, assuming the level of significance at 0.05. In order to compare people with the different forms of employment, the Kruskal-Wallis test was used. Findings & Value added: The research results indicated that there are certain relationships between the form of employment and loyalty to the employer. A majority of the respondents believed that the form of employment influences the loyalty to the employer. A majority also rated the degree of their own loyalty to the employer high. Employees working under an indefinite duration employment contract rated the impact of the current form of employment on loyalty to the employer higher than people that have a fixed-term employment contract. The people who have an indefinite duration employment contract rated the degree of their own loyalty to the employer higher than people that have a fixed-term employment contract.

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of sex on the acute effect of static-passive one-session stretching on V sit-and-reach scores in university students. A sample of 76 college students aged 19-30 years were divided into a women group (n = 36) and men group (n = 40). During one session the students performed stretching exercises for the major body muscles using the static-passive technique. Hamstring and lower back muscles extensibility was estimated by the V-sit-and-reach test at the beginning and at the end of the stretching session. The results of the two-way ANOVA with the Bonferroni adjustment showed that females and males did not show a different response to the one-session stretching intervention (p > 0.05). However, both the women and men increased statistically their scores after performing the stretching session (p < 0.001). In conclusion, no differences have been found in the trainability of flexibility by sex. However, there are differences of flexibility by the sex of students, being the females, who obtained the highest marks in the V-sit-and-reach. All this knowledge could help coaches to design more effectives stretching programs.
